I bought Road to Vostok to see what Godot is capable of and why everyone is suckling this dev's dick. It's just Stalker with no anomalies and worse/no lore. I thought it was going to be an actual openworld game but it's just small self-contained maps connected by loading screens again like Stalker.Release a game that is objectively worse in every way to the game that you're copying and still get 5000 reviews in 6 weeks? What's the deal?

finished sensor v1 implementation, handles los/partial los, simulates sensor errors based on a bunch of different factors, ended up being way more complicated than expected, was planning to also add ECM and radar but I ran out of motivation to keep working on the same module, will just put that off to the side for sensor v2.Had a huge scare when I was testing it and noticed my fps dropping to shit, but it just turns out I forgot LINQ is unusably shitty. Might have to spend some time doing a partial refactor/migration to DOTS/ECS since I was hoping to simulate battalion sized fights with infantry and fights but it's probably going to cap out at 20-30 mechs/units if I stick with with monobehaviour given how heavy my scripts are.
>>567467410It's true. That's why chads like Crumble were only here for a short time. Once you make gaem there's no reason to stick around.Crumble won
>>567466969No anomalies? LAME! I played that other Stalker like last night, Misery. It was free to play for a few days. It sucked. The only anomaly I encountered was a lame sphere that expands and unexpands. It's got some fomo like designs in it to that just put me off. The overall handling of how the game world is designed also sucks. And that art, you gotta be kidding me maybe I should switch from 2D to 3D design if this Stalker like can get away with so much stuff and still do well.

In fact I've got enough skill points in the Mimicry skill tree to draw over others art and mimic their style. Which has led to a few occasions where I'd nudify characters.....such as the hi-res render of my waifu which was drawn incorrectly (boobs not big enough). I drew them bigger.....and later I removed her dress. And then I did the same to my other non-nude waifu. Seriously I just need an artist that can draw me just enough pieces and I can mimicry the rest of the designs for my game myself.

>>567471929Do you not play MMOs? This problem has been solved to varying degrees of success in them. You can just give them DPS specs for solo leveling content and let them respec to support for group content. You could flavor it as stances or whatever. Go level a dev evoker and swap to aug at 90 if you want to see how WoW handles a true support. Healing is even easier, you just track HPS the same way you would track DPS. (And ideally balance so that HPS and DPS are at similar levels.)
>>567474803His idea isn't original at all. It's a sokoban type and somebody did make a game just like his and it flopped. Forgot the name of that game it was some gay shit.
>>567473763>>567474291There is such a thing as playing to your strengths though and working at your level. There's so many types of games you could make where animation skill isn't important because the animations are minimal or not central and you can still learn during the process. If the animations are too important for you to stoop to using stock animations then it would make sense for you to be good at animation before deciding to start a project that hinges on animation.
>>567475520but then you never git gud
>>567467624FYI just swapping to ECS/DOTS probably won't save you, the ECS architecture only really benefits you when you start scaling into tens of thousands of operations. Also you have to sacrifice a lot of engine features to make that transition. But what you can do is just translate the "heavy" parts of the code to Burst compileable stuff and you'll probably get 95% of the benefit you'd get going to ECS anyways. Also make sure you're profiling and know that it actually is the scripting eating your runtime; just having a lot of skinned meshes animating might be the real culprit.
>>567475520Shut up RETARD animation has the second-highest effort to payoff ratio at the noob gainz level. the nervous system is the key to understand both yourself and your players. we do things based on how our nervous system reacts to it. it's all about regulation. that's why "fun", "passion", "interests" are all useless concepts to me. for some people pain and frustration regulates their nervous system, for others its comfy games, for others it's boring walking sims with literally nothing in it, for others its social experiences.it has a lot to do with learned patterns in childhood or what problems someone is facing in life.that's why genres exist.it blows my mind how people try to define fun and gamedesign without studying deep psychology and neuroscience at all.

jk rowling is interesting, because i had that thought before too. doing work to cope with poverty instead of trying to get out of poverty.took her 5 years to write the first harry potter, while being a single mom on welfare.but i also suspect that back then they had less options to cope, therefore they naturally gravitated to hobbies. nowadays factorio can perfectly hit the same spot programming does, minecraft can hit the spot that 3D modeling does etc. etc.also another problem is that when you feel better and don't need to cope anymore, it becomes pointless to keep doing it.

>>567498221>In December 2015, OpenAI was founded as the nonprofit organization OpenAI, Inc.,[17] by Elon Musk, Sam Altman, Ilya Sutskever, Greg Brockman, Trevor Blackwell, Vicki Cheung, Andrej Karpathy, Durk Kingma, John Schulman, Pamela Vagata, and Wojciech Zaremba, with Elon Musk and Sam Altman as the co-chairs.[18][19] A total of $1 billion in capital was pledged by Elon Musk, Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, Reid Hoffman, Jessica Livingston, Peter Thiel, Amazon Web Services (AWS), and Infosys.[20][21] However, the actual capital collected significantly lagged pledges. According to tax filings, only $133.2 million had been received by 2021.[22]>Elon Musk stated in 2015 that he was partly motivated by concerns about AI safety and existential risk from artificial general intelligence.[23][18] Elon Musk is an expert at fooling and manipulating people. As for AI, I am less concerned about it putting people out of jobs, and more concerned about whether it is or will be able to do even half of what is claimed. Putting people out of jobs should be possible to handle, retraining and such are some tools in that regard (though I acknowledge that (social and other) disruptions can be large and cause significant problems and make it difficult to adapt quickly for both individuals and for societies and civilizations). And besides, if there really is potential in AI, then one company being stopped from doing AI research, would not prevent other companies or countries from doing AI research. Like an arms race situation. The current business and industry approach to AI seems to have a lot of issues, possibly even a craze where the expectations are at risk of being way higher than the reality the next many decades, but research into it is fine in my opinion. The issues of AI being able to circumvent copyright of art and code and other things are annoying and requires handling somehow, as is the ability of AI to spam massive amounts of low-quality output.

Study Other Artists: Look at the pixel art created by others for inspiration. Analyze their use of colors, proportions, and how they convey emotion or depth. Experiment with Different Styles: Try changing your approach, whether it’s using different color palettes, styles, or themes. Experimentation can often lead to unexpected and interesting results. Use References: Find references from real life or other art mediums. This can give you a clearer vision of what you might want to create and help with proportions. Set Small Goals: Instead of trying to create a complete piece, set smaller, manageable goals. This could be focusing on a single character or a specific background element. Create with Restrictions: Sometimes setting limitations, such as using a specific color palette or a small canvas size, can spark creativity and force you to think outside the box.Regarding drugs, while some people might believe that they enhance creativity, the effects can vary greatly, and many can lead to negative consequences. It's essential to find healthier ways to stimulate your creativity. Consider other activities like physical exercise, meditation, or simply getting out into nature. These can often lead to clarity and inspiration without the downsides of substance use.Ultimately, creativity is a journey, and it’s okay to have tough days. Keep experimenting, and you will find your way!

In such a case, an AI could be better in some ways. Unless the AI is not properly isolated and sandboxed and goes haywire and deletes the production database and its backups. An LLM can mess up security horribly, mess up architecture horribly, etc. Similar to a truly awful programmer. It can do terrible things really, really quickly, so it needs to be sandboxed. You can then roll the dice on it and hope for the best, or have automated tests and hope they can catch absolutely everything and anything. Or manually review the changes by a competent and responsible programmer, which can take more time than that competent and responsible programmer writing it in the first place for some cases. There are some sweet spots for LLM usage, but some of the sweet spots still involves a skilled programmer. And sweet spots are far from everywhere with AI. AI can be a lot like taking code from StackOverflow or random blog posts or libraries. In such a case, you still need to understand the code and the domains involved.>And hunting down bugs in the code? AI can do it significantly faster, and you can have multiple instances of the AI hunting down multiple bugs/fixes at the same time.AI is good at hunting down some subset of bugs and architectural issues and the like. But it can have false positives, requiring an experienced programmer in the loop to verify the bugs. And from what I hear in the field, AI is not great at architecture, not even with guidance. And if AI usage was so easy and good, a lot of the games in /agdg/ would have way fewer bugs.

>>567534378>some games deserve to be removed from the front page entirely.it's as if you didn't read my post. they don't give a shit. why would they? they have marketshare majority, their userbase is extremely locked down on their store and is more loyal to them than apple or nintendo customers are, so they don't have to give a shit about hte negligible reputational damage it does to them.but more importantly, all that slop you see is valve's main source of income. i'm not kidding.according to that tweet, just from the 100$ fee from all the RELEASED games this year they've made 888 thousand dollars. this number does not include the 30% they take from every one of those games, and it also doesn't include all the UNRELEASED GAMES and DEMOS.because if you check the steam appids, they increase by a million each year. and although some of those appids are DLCs, test apps, music kits and other shit, the majority of it are still games.just think how much slop we don't see simply because the dev never pressed the "release" button, and how much money valve makes from that.and now explain to me, why would they put an end to a literal money printer like this?

Maybe the meta is too young, or it will be changed during EA, or it isn't an issue in practice. There also seems to be a lot of bugs in the game. Some multiplayer modes seem great for playing, but also seem very arcadey - like two heroes clashing 3 times automatically, but the first two clashes, neither side loses any army. Might be for the better, overall. The game seems to be a mess in regards to art and story, and not as clear as one might like in a strategy game.No boats, no underground, though that can change, possibly. They don't have multi-hex units, and they should probably stick to not having them. It doesn't make sense in terms of lore. It could have made some art easier if the game was 2D, since it means more space for graphically larger unit types, but with 3D, turning to attack, it would just look weird. In terms of gameplay, some complexity might be lost. An alternative might be some added complexity regarding that kind of stuff some other way.Not doing full 3D, but with isometric view, seems like a missed opportunity. Would make the back hexes look as large as the front ones. They could possibly still experiment with it.A lot of focus on some of the stranger gameplay aspects of HOMM3, which is the safer choice in some ways. They probably already had success riding the nostalgia wave, and now just need to go through the motions. I am skeptical that anyone would have bought the game if it didn't have the name and nostalgia aspects.

WelpI thought it would take a lot longer than this, like a couple of decades at least, but after just 5 short years of Unity gamedev, the thought of having to get up in the morning to debug another MonoBehaviour lifecycle issue, wrangle another prefab variant, fix another Animator controller, chase another Addressables/IL2CPP build bug, or review some agent generated """gameplay system""" slop is making me wanna delete the whole Library folder and walk into the sea.I can feel that I'm mere weeks if not days away from having a full-on editor crash at work.Gonna hand in my notice, run out the clock, and try to chill over the summer. After that, any advice on what's the current meta for salvaging your life as a burnout europoor Unity gamedev?
>>567542456don't quit your jobI don't care if you're the turd assessor in the sewers, hold on to your job like your life depends on it
>>567541971the jeet retard is trying to push his post hoc analysis as a dogmatic truth
>>567541971Average playtime theory isn't short games can't make it. It's that longer games are all but guaranteed to make it while shorter games are more of a gamble. For every short game that makes it, you can name a dozen that flopped, while you can only name a very tiny handful of games with higher playtimes that still flopped.
>>567540439nundev wonnedthanks for the stats sis
>>567542740>For every short game that makes it, you can name a dozen that floppedFor every game that makes it, you can name a dozen that floppedMy issue with the playtime theory retard is that he keeps pointing to short playtimes as the reason some game flopped
>>567541994For the cumulative games value you may as well cut that number down to 400 every year because only 400ish games a year ever get shown to anyone on steam. So in 2025 sure you had 21489 games that year but 21000 now exist in the shadow realm so they are no longer competition in 2026
>>567542791Avatarfagging.
>>567541313They plan on adding and changing some stuff before release, they've confirmed the underground layer and water travel. I think the focus on using homm3 as the base is the right call. It's hard to say if it would do well without nostalgia, while Songs of Conquest is more complete it also has inferior mechanics overall. I've only ever played Jebus customs to learn the game but I think it's great.
>>567541923no, just draw maps by hand or let people genAI pictures of their own maps and add custom grids a la Dominions
>>567542968If people were willing to play the game for longer, then it wouldn't have flopped. Unlike other purely subjective, gay, feminine, magical shit like juice and appeal, playtime is a highly objective metric that you can systematically engineer and optimize for.
>>567543485You need to stop theorizing about things you don't know anything about
>>567543619You need at least 130 IQ to contemplate more complex thoughts and make it as a game developer.
Do you guys just sit there analyzing steam all day or what
>>567543739This guy doeshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Wrm7kWWKSs
>>567543619it's a jeet retard who is for some reason obsessed with zukowski, it's trying to apply his "median playtime" concept without understanding that the initial idea was focused on demos, not released games. and this jeet also doesn't understand the difference between "average" and "median". needless to say that this jeet isn't aware of goodhart's law when it says to "optimize for a metric".
Bets on Bokube failing when it releases next month?
>>567544031
>>567544112My bet is he'll get 25-45 reviews in the first month. He'll get his steam fee back but it's going to be pretty much impossible to recoup his time sunk costs.
>it works
This general feels like everybody just wants to make money with games. Is there nobody who wants to make a good game without considering if itll be successful or not?
>>567544112>Bokube releasing next month>believing it
>>567544658If it's not successful then it's not a good game.
Man you would really assume that this entire website is just indians with how often people get called jeets. At this point it's just jeets calling each other jeets.
>>5675441122000 reviews, overwhelmingly positive
>>567544031I came up with average playtime theory by myself before being evangelized by other thread ZukCHADs to Zukowski's theories, mostly upon first discovering and scouring gamalytic.com from some Marnix video, which only has mean playtime and not median, but honestly mean appears to be good enough for the kinds of games that I typically enjoy and make, since the distributions aren't as heavily skewed as other genres.Admittedly, I am biased against the kinds of games that I'd never play myself like the gay zoomer horrorslop that you seem to enjoy. Those tend to be way shorter than the complex systems games that I play.Average playtime theory really just says to make Zukowoski's #4, #5, and #6 magic games.
>>567544837Honestly I hope he does but I have a hard time seeing that.

If your game doesn't have blocks in it, you might as well delete the files because games are about blocks
is this a sustainable dev cycle?
>>567545047You're connecting dots where there is none. Betz likely is just play testing for Boku and recording any bugs that might appear which is common industry practice that way you're not wasting time trying to describe them. Timing is coincidental to the V3 show
>>567544658Dear anonymous friend, I've been here for 13 long years and haven't managed to make ONE game. Do you really think I can even think about making a SUCCESSFUL one at that?
>>567545970>10 years>30 million dollars invested>viewbotted trailer>current wishlist count translates to 20 mil loss at best, that's not counting valve's cut and publisher's cut
>>567545956my game has thousands of blocks
>>567545991I like think Betz and Boku are dating. The jealousy is driving me to dev harder.
>>567543209>It's hard to say if it would do well without nostalgia, while Songs of Conquest is more complete it also has inferior mechanics overall. I've only ever played Jebus customs to learn the game but I think it's great.Fair argument, but without the nostalgia, fanbase and name, people at large wouldn't be familiar with the mechanics, and thus a critical mass of people playing the game and playing multiplayer would be much harder to attain. And if the campaign is as terrible as many are saying, I don't think they would have gotten that mass. Also, they got a lot of feedback from interested and engaged multiplayer streamers and fans of HOMM, and some of that feedback must actually have been really good, and the developers actually had sufficient skill and insight to use the good feedback and not be led astray by the bad feedback, to some degree. But I think they also have some office politics and biased parties that hinders them in some ways (like fixing art and improving story) - though they might be fortunate that those ways in this specific case might not matter as much as other aspects (gameplay, multiplayer) due to existing fanbase. The story is probably a mess in part due to wanting to not step on toes. Like, they don't like doing literal demonization, so they went for demonic bugs/Starcraft zerg instead of humanoid demons. Which actually makes sense. But they did it in a messy and confused way, among other mishaps and weirdness. They probably already won. But, if going further, the question might be whether they can fix gameplay issues, fix bugs in general including multiplayer bugs (turn-based, shouldn't be too difficult), and if the gameplay and the fun of the game will last for years, or fizzle out and people going back to HOMM3. Ubisoft might be OK with that, since I believe they still get income from sales of HOMM3, and the studio already sold a lot in EA. Just need to do a reasonable job and do a full release at some point.Who knows.

kind of more of an analogue game question than a video game question, but as someone who knows zero about code, web dev, web design, etc what would i need to learn to make an rpg character or roster builder likehttps://compcon.app/#/https://pathbuilder2e.com/https://army-forge.onepagerules.com/army-books/grimdark-futurei dont mind sitting down and watching tutorials or reading documentation, but i kind of dont know where to start with this stuff. my background is more in 3d modeling, animation, photoshop design, illustration, that kind of stuff. i probably should have taken some web design courses in college lol
