I was one of the first people loudly calling for 5v5, and one of the first to say that shit was retarded. it didn't even take a more than a handful games in ow2 s1 to conclude they fucked the fundamentals of the game. on paper, 5v5 should’ve been a straightforward fix for the tank queue. the problem with nu-pizzard is that they didn't actually redesign anything around it. they just deleted a player and hoped the rest of the game would hold together. so they've spent years getting reactive bandaids and halfbaked experiments thrown on top of a format the game was never built for. perks, clash, endless hero swings that go from broken to useless and back again. and none of it feels like confident iteration. it feels like a studio that doesn't really know what it's doing with 5v5 and is just hoping something eventually sticks. rather than bringing in experienced designers who understand how hero shooters actually work at a high level, they keep leaning on underpaid leftists producing self-inserts and who still think the company name carries prestige.locking heroes behind a paywall was just another classic boardroom brainfart that testifies to a schizophrenic design philosophy that lurches from one disconnected experiment to the next with no real vision holding it together.overwatch used to have at least some coherence because there was lead by an autist with vision and enough competent people around them to push back and refine most of the dumb ideas before they shipped. it wasn’t perfect, but it had a throughline and SOVL. now it feels like everything's getting filtered through executives and risk-averse committees. admittedly, they have recently started "listening" more to their players thanks to competition from rivals, but it's still so obvious that they are afraid to lean more into what overwatch fundamentally is instead of just going through a checklist of what everyone else is doing.

>>567602990I never said it was perfect, quite on the contrary. but from an artists perspective, it was genius. everything fit perfectly together from the menus, to the sound to the character and world design. flawless execution out the gate. gameplay design and philosophy did waver at some points, but they were unironically AGAIN because of meddling from executives that were chasing the esports money. that being said, new characters were still deliberate introductions. year of the Brigger was horrible for everyone, but there was a method to the madness. they knew The Lena was going to be a permanent meta character and tried to fix it with an anti-dive support that was also the first melee only character outside of Reinfart. every character in the cast had obvious flaws to counteract their strengths. they had obvious roles to fill in teams. these days we might occasionally see a hint of that old design philosophy with heroes like 'detta, but otherwise every character has to be a generalist or "old character but better". every character can't suffer too harshly from the consequences of their actions or the next generation might uninstall and not buy shit from the slopshop. it's what needs to be done for 5v5 to work, but they've wasted half a decade and still have no fucking clue how to solve hog.

>>567603990i'm with you on a lot of that, the art and design stuff especially, and executive meddling in general although that was always going to happen. you overstate the esports thing which was functionally a separate company and had little if any meaningful influence, even over game balance. it's just an easy scapegoat for the dark ages that resulted from kaplan's pve delusion, which is the real thing that fucked up and derailed development. if anything esports was a net positive because it got us the replay viewer, which fucking rules. as for hero design, you're not wrong but it's kind of a function of the market as you say and i think the generalist thing is only really egregious in a few cases. personally i would delete a handful of the newer heroes (and one or two old ones) but they have also done some really excellent work like the juno for instance. i also give them a lot of credit for being way better at making maps and game modes these days, excepting clash i guess, though i think they abandoned that prematurely tbdesu. ultimately we are in a better place than i ever expected half a decade ago, even if they do plenty of retard shit still.
