>Translation?

if you run a simulation for 1000 steps and then quit without saving the state, you will have to re-compute those 1000 steps to recreate the state.

if you procedurally generate a state, "step 1000" and "step 1" are computationally identical just with different inputs and outputs.

CTRL+U has the appearance of an openworld simulation because the NPCs and their pathing are coherent across time/steps but it's procedurally generated.

it's the zukjeet. e-celeb obsessed indian (chris zukowski in particular)
he used to samefag posts about zukowski's blog in a similar fashion and when anons started calling him out on that, he went ballistic and decided to go to war with the whole thread.
he is also obsessed to an unhealthy degree with gogem for some reason. i'm not sure why, seems like he seethes over him because gogem hates steam?

So I have a tiling texture both on a wall and on the ground below the wall. How do I add hand painted dirt and or shadows between the two meshes, so they'll fit together more nicely? And on the corners and so on. Basically like in this pic.
Do I add more meshes that hover over the wall/ground?
Add another UV? On what mesh?
Some ambient occlusion trickery?

Luck is a factor. not only in the sense that you need it to sell a good game, but also when a bad game sells a lot no apparent reason.
There are a lot of shitty games that sold a lot for one reason or another, but for sure it's not all about 'marketing genius' or shilling. Sometimes even a bad game can be in the right place at the right time and sell a ton.
And of course you have hindsight to justify anything and try to make some sense of it, but there is a reason the term "one hit wonder" exists.

I think i need to change the silhouettes more strongly. The feedback ive gotten most often so far is that my art is generic. Im creatively bankrupt, so itll be hard to fix that, but ill try to. Also tried out changing the proportions as somebody stated, but i didnt end up liking any. The furry thing also didnt work out, ill return to normal humans.
Applied to more grocery stores, if i get a position and still havnt found something im satisfied with, ill just stop gamedev and drawing, it clearly isnt for me.

We're closer to normies than actually creative cool people are to us. We're just as dime a dozeney as the normie jocks. Difference is, we smell and look way worse. Dunno if those qualities can bring us closer to them triple digit review counts.

Look at guns and nuns. Very generic protag but she's crazy so everyone loves her. You just need some sort of emotional hook.
It could be your characters. The blonde femboy looks great but you could insert one or two personality traits to make him grab people like being nervous, smug, bratty, etc.
Or if you like the plain jane characters, you could look into putting more personality into the setting or side characters.

You've made the defining design element in most of the characters their boots. I think the version of this with only sleeves attached is one of the better looking ones, but if you're married to the full jacket version then you have to compromise on the colors a little. Everything can't compete for space at once, pic rel is an example where eye color > gold trim > fluff > clothing

do not underestimate normies they are smarter than you believe
>>
>>567631869
There is a barrier you forget. To even get something playable to a DD you are already on top of the huge mass of people that tries to dev.
Imo nobody who has a game in dd can be considered a normie.
'actually creative' means shit, there is no difference between a schizo that dreams of his solo devved mmo and a stardew dev. Creativity is not about quality, money, resonance with other people or about your skill to put your dream into code/paper.
It's not about being actually creative, but being skillful enough to put your autism to good use

You are really egging me on into posting my art aren't you -___- I've been at this for years and still suck. The difference between then and now is noticeable but it still pales to what you can make. Best I can do is mere mimicry of others art but I need to frequently stare at it as I draw it. Perhaps you see an issue with the overall styling of your characters? A unique look you desire to give? I haven't seen the whole cast you have in your game but perhaps referencing other similar games might help to see how they made their characters look unique? I'd need to see a line up of your characters to decide if they've got that memorable/unique look.

In your own words this is nothing special....so I suppose I can pay you $10 USD for a whole sprite with animations....I mean you think it's lousy so it shouldn't cost me all that much for you to make "lousy" designs for my game, right? In fact how about just doing all the art I need in my game? I can pay you $10 per monster sprite (and their animations), $40 per boss sprite (and their animations), $15 per generic NPC (and their animations), $30 per unique side character (and their animations, less than main character by a large margin), and $100 for the main characters sprite (and all her unique animations, much more than a monster). Oh and of course the tilesets for each level, mmmm say $20 a piece due to the amount of sprites.

How's that sound? I may as well pay you and pump my odds of gamedev success. Beats gambling $10k and timing the pico top and losing over $5k in under a weeks time....

Hmm lets see her
>main character: $100
>side characters x 5: $150
>npc's x 16: $160
>monsters × 30: $300
>bosses × 10: $400
>tilesets x 12: $240
Total: $1350
And if you are capable of it, would you be willing?

Hollow Knight was made in 3 years and YOMIhustle was made in 3 months.
Making a 10,000+ review game takes somewhere between 3 months and 3 years.

Everyone in Team Cherry had been working professionally in the games industry for well over a decade since before they started working on Hollow Knight. IDK much about IvySly, but he also has like a dozen games on his itch.io page from before he started on YOMIH.

>If you're so confident in your abilities, why not just quit your job and spend a year making a good game while coasting off your savings? You'll become a millionaire once the game inevitably sells, right?
That's what I'm doing. I'm a former programmer wagie with about 3 years of savings left, and admittedly, I originally underestimated how much domain specific knowledge there is to be learned when getting into gamedev, especially in the realm of game design for smaller games, since I never really played any of those. I wasn't even aware of genres like roguelikes or deckbuilders until I started hanging around /agdg/. Over the last three or so years, it's been a journey for me to retune my video game sensibilities from MMO live services and AA tactics curses down to pick from three and GUI-only incrementals.

The people in the discord already told me that my lineup looks bland and generic. I dont need to show that slop again. I dont have a clear vision of how i want them to look exactly, whatever reference i find i dont like, and when i produce something without reference its slop like this. I also cant say a single game in which i like their lineup either. The problem is most likely that i dont appreciate art in the first place.

Your mistake is going into it like that, the way you decide which book to read contextualizes your reading of it, having a selection spoonfed to you is likely to build animosity when the choices aren't interesting to you
If you're looking for inspiration or entertainment or advice or anything other than factual knowledge of what was in a book you have to make your own choices

Oh yeah, read about that too but forgot. So yeah, I stand corrected, it most likely is vertex colors considering the time. With that you can get the nice fade between the textures. I'm just not sure how to expose or use the vertex coloring to map the second texture... my I guess the vertex color acts as a mask on the custom shader for the second texture?

On a surface level some genres seem so simple to design but it really isn't that simple once you get down to it. Having also rearranged my thought processes towards smaller games, it's been quite a hassle.

you need to learn to write your own custom shaders.
Ask gemini or chat gpt to help with writing a mix operation that takes into account the vertex color as mask to blend two textures.

my guess is that the publisher gives low-quality or low-conversion traffic to their partners, and force them to overprice their games
they probably have low expectations out of what they perceive as trashy games, but still play the marketing lotto since they just provide cheap traffic and have no real risk unlike the developers

tldr: stay away from publishers

This is the definition of productive procrastination. You need to mark that guy's design as "done" right now and work on a new character or programming or music. Literally do anything but this.
And public meandering is ripe for crabbing, (positive and negative) which you should not subject yourself to if you can't handle it.
You said you slept like 3 hours last weekend. If that wasn't some rare one off thing, you need to go running to the point of exhaustion tomorrow and follow it up with body weight exercises to fix that shit asap regardless of if you want to dev or wage.

A very small team including myself are starting development on a top down multiplayer shooter, with only one person having real experience with coding and modeling. What is a good way to collaborate virtually with each other on different aspects of the game? Github, or something else? Also, any useful links for balanacing weapons and characters? Map design principles? Most stuff ive seen online says that "balance" is a nebulous term, so i am wondering if there are tried and true formulas for balancing different parts of the game that are applicable for us. We are going to use godot to develop it.

It would be the wrong choice, even for easiness, because I know a much easier way that also gets you much easier results. No this is not a joke:
>JavaScript/TypeScript is what AI Models are most trained in, thus they're the most intelligent at.
>Get a GPT Plus subscription and download GPT Codex
>Ask it to make a TypeScript game on your computer for you, keep asking it to do stuff until the game is done.
It's drastically easy and also really good results now. I've made a full multiplayer game that was stress tested at 100+ players and it has crafting, inventory, items, procedurally generated maps, and tons of crazy stuff

>>
>>567663635
One thing though is that JavaScript/TypeScript has many existing libraries, the largest collection of any language in fact, and when you ask the AI to do something you should always ask it if there is already a good existing library that already provides all or part of what you just asked it to do.

If you don't do this, you may find the AI tries to roll it's own version of something that already exists and is better than what the AI created.
>>
>>567663635
>>567664374
that seems like cheating. i want it to be something i make entirely by myself, the main reason i want to make a game is because i make art and music and want to combine everything i do into something fun that i like. i have no doubt that itll be more efficient but it wouldnt be my own work, id feel guilty and a little scared of getting exposed too.

For example the libraries in my game include:
>threejs for 3d rendering
>nengi for netcode
>bitecs for ecs
I forget what else, but point is if I had let the AI roll it's own for any of those it would have been far inferior. Possibly even non-functional.
>>
>>567664374
>better than what the AI created
unpossible
>>
>>567663509
As in the game, or some type of software? I am currently looking through the resources in the OP
>>
>>567664374
Nah, that's the wrong approach for vibecoding. You're better off letting it roll its own implementation for common libraries where reasonable. It'll have a much easier time fitting that within its context window than if it has to regularly read the docs for some external dependency. You usually want to avoid this as a human programmer because of the extra boilerplate and time wasted, but that doesn't matter for an AI.
>>
>>567664537
you're already 'cheating' by wanting to make a 'plaformer' like 'sonic', as they are existing libraries of proven ideas you are 'stealing' from. does anyone notable say it's wrong to use AI to help you code a game?
>>
>>567664618
Pong the game, or if you're sure you'll be using Godot, make Dodge the Creeps and then Brackey's platformer. Right now, you're 100% dead weight, so the collaboration method doesn't matter at all.
>>
>>567664915
i dont think taking inspiration from something is cheater otherwise anyone who has made anything is a cheater. i dont want to make a game about a blue hedgehog who goes fast, but i do want to take inspiration from that fast 2d gameplay. youre letting a machine do the work for you. plus i thought games coded with ai were generally pretty broken and buggy and only fixable if you already had coding knowledge.

'ddites aren't upset about AI doing code they're upset about valueless jobs being threatened. They think the ultimate existence is being paid for something producing no value and only be valued for your personality or talent, money in their patreon acts as a substitute for the parental love they never got. By using AI for the arts you're telling them that their lived experience isn't unique and what they assumed was sovl was actually just marketable, commercialized ideas. The more people use AI the more they fear normies will internalize this truth.
>>
>>567665434
>i dont think taking inspiration from something is cheater otherwise anyone who has made anything is a cheater.
exactly, and the same is true for AI code assist. coders copy from everywhere, before AI you would be scouring the net for libraries and code snippets, algorithms etc, and if pressed for time, entire systems from asset stores that handled movement, inventory, saves etc. making a game is still an art, putting it all together, making all the right decisions to make it good. AI will readily make you a bad game if you are not telling it the right things.

If a game you (worked on / made assets for) is super successful, you can put it in your resume and rise your prices. If that game flops badly you just put it in some list of your portfolio

it can do it on it's own, especially with a subscription(you get access to opus 4.7, the current best coding AI) and you get claude code, a desktop app to use instead of the chat window which is what you'd want as the codebase grows. opus uses up your 5-hourly usage fast though, so I only use opus to plan, and sonnet(a bit dumber) to implement the plan. kind of insane what a sub gets you.. It's only 2-3 anons that are spamming the thread with AI and schizo ramblings. It's been that way since before the first time I visited this board in 2019.

Most generals have at least of those 1 ban-evading genuine schizos.
The difference here is that this topic requires actual work and perseverance as it's not about your call of duty K/D ratio, so the talentless and skillless are a lot more bitter and some feel obligated to try and drag everyone down to their level so they can feel better about being worthless.

Focus especially on anatomy, posing, hair, clothing, colour theory, stylization, silhouettes. Fill up your visual library.
Then, at some point in the middle, give up and just smash two or three existing characters you like into one with photoshop and ship it into your game like a hack (me).

What makes him succeed and Cris fail?

After so long resisting AI, work made me install codex and now... It's still just a marginal improvement and the only reason anyone can afford to use it is because AI companies are shoveling VC money onto a bonfire paying the datacenter costs for you to make the product seem viable.

By this time next year three.js will be a serious contender for indie game creation. In the last week we've got

>A guy rapidly creating Meta humans
https://x.com/alightinastorm/status/2055111991681851549

This year we got
>A standalone for webGPU that supports three.js called Mystral without the Chromium overhead

The socially inept and awkward end up externalizing their needs and creates systems and hobbies to simulate a fulfilling life. Games are a way to invite others to participate in that simulation. Normies have no desire or concept of how to do this because the only things they're not getting out of life are war with mortal enemies, and exploring the unknown. Normies get to experience both through movies and tv shows, a form media that doesn't require active participation.

Depends on the game. Big mistake if your game has depth that is revealed through the interface primarily. After playtesting a game, just recently mentioned in feedback that trailer is harmed by lack of interface, which makes game appear as chiefly an action game, which it actually isn't.
>>
>>567711602
marketing is a multiplier. if a game was going to earn $200 but you spend 200 hours on marketing and you triple the game's sales then you effectively worked for $2/hr
in that case it's better to leave it to luck and invest the 200 hours in your next game

>what do you even mean by this?
In this particular case? Using money.
You have a product that people would want to buy. You identify an audience that would like to buy your product. How do you get the product in front of that audience?
What people here do:
- Spam streamer mails with their game's keys -> A gamble on whether they'll pick it up or not.
- Make youtube shorts/tiktok videos -> Again, slot machines hoping they'll get shown to the right person at the right time.
To remove the gambling element you need to use money. PAY a streamer to play your game, then it doesn't rely on their whims. PAY to have your game screenshots/videos shown to people. Then it doesn't rely on the algorithm. PAY someone to make an actually interesting trailer that would make people interested. Then it doesn't rely on people trying your game before buying it. (Kinda like those retarded mobile commercials that gets people to click on them.) PAY to participate in game conventions/showcases IRL. And so on. (There are other methods I didn't list that involve less money but more time spent doing organic showcases, but I'll count that also as "spending money" since time is valuable.)

I mean I'm not saying you should do this if you don't have the budget, but don't complain about the industry being a lottery when you refuse to invest in fail-safes against unpredictable elements. It's like trying to raise some crops without investing in measurements against random weather events that could ruin them.

>>567712161
You are correct, but I was working on the assumption that the developer believes he made an amazing gangbusters game that just got unfairly hidden by the algorithm.
>>
>>567714098
I know you're slightly retarded for even asking that question, but I do regularly go dumpster diving by combining a bunch of genres and exploring releases by new, and yeah, it's slop all the way through.

>PAY a streamer to play your game, then it doesn't rely on their whims
it still does, they probably already have multiple chink slops paying them to play their slop on stream. i've even seen emails of streamers who were paid to play a game be late on that on here, on /agdg/.
not to mention that paid promotions are way less effective than natural attention (if a streamer/youtubist showcased your game due to online hype)
>PAY to have your game screenshots/videos shown to people. Then it doesn't rely on the algorithm
pay who exactly? muskrat? even paid xitterjeets are still beholden to the algorithm, only to a slightly less degree.
>PAY to participate in game conventions/showcases IRL.
every dev i've seen said that these conventions/showcases IRL have a very low output in terms of actual market awareness, since these conventions are primarily attended by other devs. i'm pretty sure even youtube grifters like zukowski and brush say this at this point.

> PAY someone to make an actually interesting trailer that would make people interested.

>Then it doesn't rely on people trying your game before buying it.

My post was already near character limit. I don't have the time or space to go here into great detail on every point dude, the "idiotic non-sequitur" was just an oversimplified statement. What convinces people to buy a game? What causes people to hang up on and hesitate before buying a game? What makes them decide to buy a game that is just released today, has 0 reviews and no youtube content on it? Word of mouth approval, risk management, time investment, FOMO, there's a lot of factors that go into a purchase decision. So the point was that a good trailer can secure a purchase without relying on other factors such as whether other people told you that game is good or not. A demo can help but you need to convince them that it's worth their time to begin with.

Either way I'm not here to do game dev couching so that's enough wasting time for me, I said my piece. There are whiners and there are problem solvers, which one do you want to be?

That kind of commitment is justified when you make a game in the top 1-5%, let's say a revenue of a quarter million dollars and above.
If your game fails or underperform as it's usual, getting your job back will be hard; and getting a new job with a void of 3years on your resumé because you tried to make it big with your garageband is lmao. Of course if your current 'job' is being a burger flipper or a doordasher, that's another question. There's even a chapter about it in this indie game dev manga I read.
If you're successful you can just hire someone to read all the reviews and comments and forward you only the legitimate feedback and nice comments.
If your game isn't successful then the comments don't really matter anyway, I doubt feedback can turn a flop into an unflop post-release.

im stuck on my game, because i lost my vision.

i dont even have a proper scope, im just unable to plot it out.

I've been running on pure delusions with this project of mine, but now I have to face the fact that the game mechanics i employ may not match the vision i previously i had for it.

Something about being able to hide the mechanics behind a curtain, like watching a really good movie. you cant dissect it. i thought i could achieve that, but i lost faith.

hmm...ill figure it out. but anyone know what im talking about? my tiny mind cant even fathom a solution as of this moment. ive been procrastinating by implementing objective systems like lighting and other bull shit

those things need to get done. game icon needs to get done. save system needs to get done. the important thing is to maintain momentum. let your brain work on the big picture in a background task

All the American AI companies are doomed to fail eventually anyway. Inevitably they will reach the point of diminishing returns and Chinese open source models will catch up and eat their lunch. Could be in a couple years or it could be in a decade but it will happen and that's a good thing.
Closed source AI is slavery, all AI models should have to be free and open source because they were trained on all of our data - we should all benefit from it.
>>
>>567720685
It happens pretty often on F95 and itch.io, it's just that nobody cares when it happens there.
But you probably don't actually use alternatives to Steam on the regular yourself and just want to cry.
>>
>>567721468
Those are small companies. Its understandable they don't have the capability of checking every game. Valve is the most profitable tech company per employee in the world. They have the resources to hire people to check the games.
>>
Too bad I'm too retarded to even use AI properly.
So I'm still using chatGPT the traditional way to develop my game.
>>
>>567721804
how do i make game?
>>
>>567721619
The game was checked, the malware was added in a later patch. Do you really want a 3-5 days review for every single patch you push to your game? I already saw people in this thread lose their minds for having to wait a couple of days just for their Steam page to be verified which is a one time thing.

Though I'd agree with reviewing every patch, as long as you raise the Steam entrance fee to $10k per game, so I know employees aren't wasting their time checking "Hentai Girls Solitaire Puzzle 5" but actually important games like mine.

Modern game devs are definitely spoiled, especially indies.
On Playstation you actually DO have to wait even up to 1-2 weeks (depending on how frustrated the Sony employee is today) for EVERY single patch you push. So you better make it count. None of that "updates 1.431 increased stats for crabs by 1, fixed a typo" bullshit you see today in devs logs.

A lot of successful devs have awful takes.
Carmack says story doesn't matter in games. (Gets proven wrong.)
On the other spectrum you have Neil Druckmann who says they don't use the word "fun" at Naughty Dog.
Then you have Miyamoto coming out and saying that video games don't leave behind a legacy the way movies do, because a movie can still be watched 20 years later but a game is tied to its console and can't be played 20 years later, hence why he wants to make more movies than games at the end of his career.

Yeah, about as much of a point as saying that movies released on CDs die because people use different disk reading technology in the future to watch the movies they buy.
aka a non-issue as long as even 1 person decides it's worth preserving and transferring over to the new technology. Assuming of course Nintendo doesn't explicitly go out of their way to fuck over everyone who wants to preserve and emulate their games.

Miyamoto is old and senile, what's your excuse for being stupid?
