Its very horizontal progression oriented once you get to a certain mastery rank (currently MR 17), but thats only if you want to unlock every item in the game. MR lower than that is very quick and easy to obtain and opens all the content in the game. Only thing you really need to spend plat on (and a very small amount of it) is weapon/frame slots.

As a Destiny 2 player, it’s truly nonsense to blame the death purely on Marathon. It is an easy scapegoat, but Destiny has been bleeding for many years. It lived way past Destiny 1. It has lived a long life. Bungie made many decisions regarding the sandbox and expansions that continued to kill the player-base. I truly do mourn for the game we could’ve had. I also don’t see Destiny 3 ever existing without Destiny 2 dying. The future remains uncertain and although frustrating, stay hopeful.
