I worked at Nintendo of America, in Redmond, Wa. The Christmas party was always a suit-and-tie affair at a swanky downtown hotel. Two employees would dress up as Mr. and Mrs. Claus, and you could get a photo taken with them.My co-worker, Chuck, is a six foot two psychopath with a limp mohawk. He has tattoos up and down each arm and rides a motorcycle. He's also the son of a local car dealer magnate, so he's got a bit of the spoiled rich kid attitude that he can get away with anything.Chuck and I worked in the Nintendo call center, where we told people how to beat video games all day long. It was the only job I've ever done better stoned than sober. It's also one of the few jobs where they give you a game system at your desk and ask you to play while you work.Back to the Christmas party; Chuck is hammered, despite the alcohol being doled out at the rate of two drink tickets per person. When he gets to the photo opportunity with Mr & Mrs Claus, he stands facing Mrs. Claus (back to the camera), swaying slightly, then drops to his knees, sticks his head under her skirt and yells, "Take the picture!"He was escorted off company property by a security guard the next day.

>>568031494There'll be a character creator with this game to customize facial and head features, what I'm showing won't be the default character don't worry
I banned myself all day. its been a good & productive. i originally started this side project because I got pissed at my default terminal emulator which didn't have the features I wanted in the way I wanted. and I thought "how hard can it be?" then I been brainstorming how this can also fit a game. anyway, lately I've had another pet peeve getting to me so I've gone back to this and added this feature. so in KiTTY the sub-shells are kind of like alternate buffers in vim, I basically find both kind of confusing and not easy to use. So I've made my own sub shell feature using the same default key binds but as a floating window. Also I decided that I want input to the root terminal to be blocked while any sub shell is still open because that force me to not be too ADHD but I still want to be able to select from it to copy paste, and I want the subshells to be able to be moved around and I want to be able to drag out a outlined call-out to remind me what part of the root shell this subshell is for, so if I tab away and do other stuff in other terminal or different app then come back to this, it will be very visual and I can see immediately where I was and never ask the question "which one is the active one?" which I had this problem last night that led to doing this today. The other thing I always wanted to do like if I run "ls -al" then all of the output is one code block that has a [+] for code folding and a copy to clipboard icon. but that is controlled by the shell, not the terminal>>568046047aggymart>>568048409I use the web chat to explain to me 3d maths and camera projection stuff because I'm trying to do world picker -> ui inventory drag&drop type stuff, which was easy enough (camera.unproject then shoot a ray) but then I wanted an offset_lookat() function for in-engine cut scenes, which is just like a normal lookat(), but instead of 0,0 center of screen, any arbitrary point on screen, and my attempt was not always working correctly.

Demo Day 69 is almost here, and you'd like to get something back from all your hard effort. I will make a generous donation to your demo if you add a screen at the beginning that says "I'm a farty fart man with a big smelly butt that smells like farts". It must be unskippable and stay present and visible for at least 5 seconds.Note that for any qualifying games I'll be waiting a week to make sure you don't just immediately replace it.I don't want to list an exact amount, because a game where it really doesn't fit in, or going the extra mile (fart noises in your soundtrack, especially in a serious game, things like that) will be rewarded more heavily. Humiliate yourself. The more you degrade yourself, the harder I laugh, the better your reward. Life handed me some bounty with Bitcoin and GME, so I'm more than happy to "give a little back" ;)

But when I record it or take a screenshot the sprites looks perfectly fine.Has anyone else experienced this?

It gives the player a (false) sense of achievement, as if they outsmarted the game by building something strong. In truth it is a system designed to make OP builds which are often necessary to beat the game. With the RNG involved putting together a specific OP build is about the stars aligning, not about player skill but players are fools, cattle to be herded.
>>568089550It's a dev eat dev world out there bro, sorry.
>>568089893Pretty much. It's the same thing with (successful) strategy games. They succeed because they make the player feel smart. If you were to make a game that actually required decisive thinking and planning that went beyond "I'm going to hide in a corner and make a big army since the ai isn't aggressive" you would just anger them.
>>568089893>>568090317Video games are meant to be fun, go pick up a book or something if you want to be an obnoxious snob.

>>568090398Are you stupid? That's the whole point. It doesn't matter what is actually happening it is the players' perception of it that forms their opinion of the experience they are having. If you can make them perceive the experience as fun then you've succeeded in making a fun game. It is up to you as the designer to control the players' experience. It is up to you to make it fun for them and you need to understand how that happens. What is actually going on VS what the player thinks is going on.
>>568092201there are no bots in this thread man, this is the game dev pit of despair of the internet
>>568093238Obviously PVP games are different in that the opponent isn't the game (and its designer) but the other player. The game is simply a ruleset for the players to compete with one another. By building a good deck in MTG the player feels that he has outsmarted the opponent and that might very well be true. That's why most people have an absolute miserable time losing in PVP games and why forced 50% winrate matchmaking sucks. Can you imagine making a single player game where the player has a shitty time 50% of the time he's playing the game? That wouldn't do so well or it would be a highly niche game focused on forcing the player to git gud which appeals to some but not most.
>>568093621>Can you imagine making a single player game where the player has a shitty time 50% of the time he's playing the game?yea it's called dark souls and it's defined gaming for nearly 2 decades
If you want to make it (financially), scout steam for a successfully game that you would like to copy. Play the shit out of it. Figure out what are the negative aspects of that game, how to remove or fix them, and what are the positive aspects of the game and how to expand on top of them. Read Reddit, Discord and Steam reviews for common complains about the game and address them. Then, release a more polished version of the same game, at similar or slightly lower price tag. Here, guaranteed success.
To no one in particular:If you don't have finished games, stop giving advice on game dev, stop sharing your opinions on others' advice on gamedevAs a nofinishedgamescel, you should confine yourself to two things in this general: asking questions and posting your progressThank you for your attention to this matter
>>568094059That rose to popularity due to it making good content for streamers dying a bunch. It is still a very niche genre and in my opinion fromsoft doesn't even do it well with how jank their games are.
>>568094179i don't think anything meaningful has ever come of this. ygo did this to mtg and it became dreck. hearthstone did this to ygo and it became dreck. iterative design is fine but simply removing friction for the sake of removing friction runs a massive risk of conflating amusement with engagement and decoupling the fragile engagement combo that makes a thing amusing. your post would be more meaningful if there were examples. remove the friction from vampire survivors and get what? remove the friction from sts and get what? a nothing burger
>>568094484>rose to popularity due to it making good content for streamersmaybe if you were literally born in 2014. now account for the absolutely massive survival-like genre where players invest thousands of hours into a digital sisyphean task game like project zomboid, or any rogue-x game.
>>568094402what's worse than this is thinking because you shipped a pre-chewed clone of some extrememly popular and deterministic game and religiously follow some youtuber that fills your head with "juice" nonsense that you have a worthwhile opinion on anything. the only thing worse than a nodev is a dev who picks the corn out of bigger game's shit and thinks it grants special insight. show me your phd in mathematics or computer science shut the fuck up. or does the idea that you can't actually just divine a "good game" by reading the steam chart tea leaves make you emotional?

i just realized how fucking EVIL the gabencunt is, with how he weaponized achievements against both devs and gamers.steam achievements are just a total one-shot for the feeble gamer brain. the musical jingle, perfectly engineered to trigger all the right dopamine spots in your brain, the placement of the notification right on the periphery of the gamer's vision, ensuring it disrupts the whole picture and the gamer notices, the yellow shiny glitter designed to make the brain dispatch even more dopamines, and a global/friend achievement ranking... it's no wonder why some people are genuinely addicted to steam achievements.as for the devs, achievements are necessary for you to add. to dissuade gamers from committing refund fraud (by copying your game files before refunding the game) by attaching the game to an account deeper, to use them as a way to increase playtime (thus making the game more favourable for the alg), achievements being advertised as a feature on your store page... they're basically a necessity at this point.it's insane how evil this whole setup is. god i fucking hate gabencunt, literally the second most evil man in gamedev after john riccitiello.

For example Verse, finally adding a written scripting language back in, as an alternative to blueprint nodes or C++. Also expect tools they've worked on with partners, Black Myth Wukong was specifically mentioned at the time, and ofcourse CDPRs nanite foliage was shown off last year as the first major feature from their collaboration. There's major overhauls planned for CPU performance, making previously singlethreaded systems multithreaded. The entire engine simulation and gameplay happens on one thread, that will all become multithreaded for major performance gains. Iirc there have been some updates since they teased that already making a small start at this. Then there's big changes to networking, which is supposedly getting major improvements for MMOs and persistent online projects. Ways to have multiple communicating server nodes, players seamlessly being handed off between them, allowing massive amounts of connected players (to "the scale of millions [...], perhaps even a billion concurrent players") sharing one game. There's also some more "out there" ideas floated, like a full merge of UEFN into Unreal, essentially making Fortnite another build option next to Windows, Playstation, MacOS, etc. Though in fairness, with the November announcement that Unity would get just that, a Fortnite export option, it just might happen.

after writing this post: https://ivysly.com/blog/how-to-make-a-successful-indie-gamei figured it was probably posted here too (and later was by me, a few days ago) and i thought some of the responses were interesting so i wanted to respond in turn to them.the most common sentiment was pretty overwhelmingly:> why is this idiot pretending like he isn't good at making games? his game sold well because it's good, and good games sell.i feel like my blog post didn't convey very well that i know that i'm good at making games, and that YOMIH is in fact a special game in some regards. i understand why it blew up the way it did. i thought my saying "hard work and skill are prerequisites for luck" accounted for this, but a lot of people have come away from that post thinking i only wanted to disparage myself. not the case - i am skilled and i put in the hard work. no ulterior motives.some more things i want to address:>why is this idiot trying to discourage and deter new devs? what is in it for him?i tried to be clear about this, but my point was never that you should stop gamedeving on the basis that you will not make money. my point was that you should make games for yourself, and stop obsessing over making it your career - that's where i see people get burned and go crazy, especially here. ironically only by giving up hopes of "making it" did i become free to make a game i truly wanted to play, which then happened to resonate with other people>why are we even talking about this idiot? he left agdg years agoi've been here (sometimes)... regardless this place is a part of me for better or worse. some people were arguing about whether or not YOMIH should be on the made by agdg list, and i must say i'm actually kind of proud of it being there in some pathetic way, but ultimately it's up to you.blog over. >>568120402There's at least two different types of neuroplasticity. One type is where a tabula rasa child can be indoctrinated into whatever propaganda the adults around decide to paint them with, since they're not yet cognizant or sentient enough to make any real decisions for themself. The other type of neuroplasticity comes through meta-cognition and a high degree of sentience. This stems from a high level of education and high IQ, as well as the emotional maturity to make an active effort to seek contrary opinions, lest they be trapped in a sub-optimal local minima of thought. Unfortunately, for most people, they will never reach the second stage of neuroplasticity. We commonly refer to these people as midwit NPC sheeple, while those who can reach stage two are referred to as free thinkers. If you feel your neuroplasticity diminish in your 20s, that is because you're an NPC, and you're NGMI.

Look at the impact bad press had on yansim for example
we should split these threads into actual game development and people concerned with marketing products.
: Hirdrih Technologic ::progress :: Brinkaedea characters.>>568111491It's a platformer but instead of the companion gimmick like Nortubel, the main gimmick is a magic arrow that you can use to have some basic interactions in the levels like clicking buttons or picking up an object and move it around. In terms of story, it does take place after Nortubel and you see some returning characters after the events of the first game.I actually wanna try and have it so the story of the first game kinda shows up in any game I get to make. For example, I have ideas on Bonka's own game and how to incorporate her events in Nortubel with her main story,

I've got a big ass terrain and I want to populate it with billboard trees, bushes, etc.In Godot, these are a scene which I guess they may need to become a multi mesh or some combined item later, but at the moment I just need some way to place them in world where they snap onto the terrain instead of requiring Z adjustment. What's the smart way to do this?
you can feel the butthurt coming through in some of these posts

Time to read miyamoto musashi 5 rings book so I can BTFO chuds again.
>>568108404Lately, I've been trying to follow picrel. Sometimes I waste so much time on small details like these that I end up project hop because the project takes too much time to get anywhere. But these details are good if you also want to post progress on your socials.
Got the skeleton of new AI system working, holy shit this was a lot of work. turned into 5 stage asynchronous job pipeline to generate possible actions -> async batched raycast to get and fix correct terrain positions -> more batched raycast to evaluate cover and LOS from every candidate position -> feed candidate action + context into solver for scoring -> execute best action. Right now only scoring for weapon ranges is implemented, so it'll just try to keep a target in it's optimal range + some randomness, but I got a very robust framework to build upon.

I'm here eating a tv dinner (sweet and sour chicken with rice) along with drinking a Baja Blast Cabo Blast instead of being a super successful gamedev with a doting wife who brings me self cooked chicken tendies with the soda in a glass. Maybe one day I will make the game that makes me a million dollars and gets me many fangirls. There amongst the crowd is my doting thobeit fangirl. My game has already elevated her view of me and blushes hard at the sight of me. If only I was good at gamedev sisters ;_; The rice is okay, I've had this before and the chicken/sauce is pretty good, soda is good too. No gamedevving right now, pretty hard to focus when eating.>>568164678I hope your day gets better sis. Would you mind showing us the game? I had something similar happen to me, it was also made by a team and it may have even been funded by a publisher. Do you think you can beat them to release?
>>568159559Good Work
so what's the hardest and takes the most time in making games? let's say it's a combat game with no npcs and i already made all the combat mechanics, stats, meters all that's left is art, some animations, enemy AI, level design, did i already finish the hardest part?
>>568167858making content. In your example would be creating the npcs, giving them names, dialogues, etc. using the system's you've built.
>>568167858Map and level design probably. Arranging geometry into fun and somewhat immersive shapes.
>>568168009i literally said the game have no npcs, only enemies and the dialogue before and after boss fights would be pretty minimal and can be finished in like a day or two>>568168145yeah i feel it's this i really don't know where to start with level design, i want something like a mini elden ring not open world but similar structure where each level is a small open field with lots of hidden things like caves and mini dungeons and hidden areas and then a big dungeon at the end
>>568167858Programming
>>568166694
Why are you people so fatalistic and standoffish? What the fuck is your problem? Why can't you be more outgoing? You seriously need to lighten up. Gamedev communities should be about having fun and spreading happiness, not crabbing and egoism.
>>568169802
>>568169013>i literally said the game have no npcsmb. I mentally skimmed over the "no". I feel like you might be underestimating how long enemy AI + animations will take. It'll probably require a few passes to get right.
Not sure if this is the right place, I want to start a passion project, I've got this idea for a video game but the thing is that I grew up playing Roblox when it was safe, these days all of Roblox is plagued with MTX and a bunch of systems that I have no idea if they're reused code or not but in any case I wanted to make something simple and fun, has anybody tried Roblox studio?
