I worked at Nintendo of America, in Redmond, Wa. The Christmas party was always a suit-and-tie affair at a swanky downtown hotel. Two employees would dress up as Mr. and Mrs. Claus, and you could get a photo taken with them.

My co-worker, Chuck, is a six foot two psychopath with a limp mohawk. He has tattoos up and down each arm and rides a motorcycle. He's also the son of a local car dealer magnate, so he's got a bit of the spoiled rich kid attitude that he can get away with anything.

Chuck and I worked in the Nintendo call center, where we told people how to beat video games all day long. It was the only job I've ever done better stoned than sober. It's also one of the few jobs where they give you a game system at your desk and ask you to play while you work.

Back to the Christmas party; Chuck is hammered, despite the alcohol being doled out at the rate of two drink tickets per person. When he gets to the photo opportunity with Mr & Mrs Claus, he stands facing Mrs. Claus (back to the camera), swaying slightly, then drops to his knees, sticks his head under her skirt and yells, "Take the picture!"

He was escorted off company property by a security guard the next day.

I'm using Vulkan and C. Also each voxel isn't a mesh, this is done via fragment shader raymarching into bounding boxes. The boxes are chunks which the fragment shader raymarches voxels into.

created a cubemap render in blender with some generated noise textures + a really cool cloud turbulence texture i found then used that as a sort of filter for my hsv quantization post process, then panned the cubemap by delta engine time, i thought the effect looked neat as hell

grim, i've ran out of time and even worse the job prospects look grimmer. i can continue devving but it's gonna get a lot slower the moment i either re-enter the workforce or go back to college. if i go back to college CS is my only option despite its now grimmer outlook, still a much better outlook than my terrible degree

the rest of the possible great salaries right out of college with easy to get employment are

i either accept my terrible job prospects or go back and get a cs degree for like 2 years and maybe 30k-50k out of pocket. on the plus side the increased knowledge can on rare/some occasions help with gamedev itself provided i keep working on games in my free time and don't get a job that disallows me from making games. damn i don't want to be a wagie into my 60's. i'd rather gamedev, win, and just make games at my own pace. seems like it's all coming down to me either

managed to heavily optimize tree rendering by implementing a custom batcher that culls and renderers static trees in 500 meter grids, doesn't work with billboard right now but honestly at this level of performance (~20k 3d trees with < 1 ms hit) I'm not even going to bother with imposters and billboard workflow.

I banned myself all day. its been a good & productive. i originally started this side project because I got pissed at my default terminal emulator which didn't have the features I wanted in the way I wanted. and I thought "how hard can it be?" then I been brainstorming how this can also fit a game. anyway, lately I've had another pet peeve getting to me so I've gone back to this and added this feature. so in KiTTY the sub-shells are kind of like alternate buffers in vim, I basically find both kind of confusing and not easy to use. So I've made my own sub shell feature using the same default key binds but as a floating window. Also I decided that I want input to the root terminal to be blocked while any sub shell is still open because that force me to not be too ADHD but I still want to be able to select from it to copy paste, and I want the subshells to be able to be moved around and I want to be able to drag out a outlined call-out to remind me what part of the root shell this subshell is for, so if I tab away and do other stuff in other terminal or different app then come back to this, it will be very visual and I can see immediately where I was and never ask the question "which one is the active one?" which I had this problem last night that led to doing this today. The other thing I always wanted to do like if I run "ls -al" then all of the output is one code block that has a [+] for code folding and a copy to clipboard icon. but that is controlled by the shell, not the terminal

127 days left until my money runs out. I owe 20 hours of work.
Right now I'm working on establishing the losing/game-over conditions for the game and the UI needed to tell the player they fucked up. It's not just a game over screen, ok? It needs to have emotional relevance, it needs to encourage the player to waste however many hours on trying again, it has to tell the player how they fucked up and hint how to do it better next time. It's going to take a week at least.
In other news, I must lose at least 6kg of fat. I can't fit in my pants from last year and I can't afford new pants because I'm trying to stretch (get it?) my savings as much as possible to finish my game before I need to get a job.

Demo Day 69 is almost here, and you'd like to get something back from all your hard effort.
I will make a generous donation to your demo if you add a screen at the beginning that says "I'm a farty fart man with a big smelly butt that smells like farts". It must be unskippable and stay present and visible for at least 5 seconds.
Note that for any qualifying games I'll be waiting a week to make sure you don't just immediately replace it.
I don't want to list an exact amount, because a game where it really doesn't fit in, or going the extra mile (fart noises in your soundtrack, especially in a serious game, things like that) will be rewarded more heavily. Humiliate yourself.

Are you stupid? That's the whole point. It doesn't matter what is actually happening it is the players' perception of it that forms their opinion of the experience they are having. If you can make them perceive the experience as fun then you've succeeded in making a fun game. It is up to you as the designer to control the players' experience. Obviously PVP games are different in that the opponent isn't the game (and its designer) but the other player. The game is simply a ruleset for the players to compete with one another. By building a good deck in MTG the player feels that he has outsmarted the opponent and that might very well be true. That's why most people have an absolute miserable time losing in PVP games and why forced 50% winrate matchmaking sucks.

Can you imagine making a single player game where the player has a shitty time 50% of the time he's playing the game? That wouldn't do so well or it would be a highly niche game focused on forcing the player to git gud which appeals to some but not most.

If you want to make it (financially), scout steam for a successfully game that you would like to copy. Play the shit out of it. Figure out what are the negative aspects of that game, how to remove or fix them, and what are the positive aspects of the game and how to expand on top of them. Read Reddit, Discord and Steam reviews for common complains about the game and address them. Then, release a more polished version of the same game, at similar or slightly lower price tag.

i just realized how fucking EVIL the gabencunt is, with how he weaponized achievements against both devs and gamers.

steam achievements are just a total one-shot for the feeble gamer brain. the musical jingle, perfectly engineered to trigger all the right dopamine spots in your brain, the placement of the notification right on the periphery of the gamer's vision, ensuring it disrupts the whole picture and the gamer notices, the yellow shiny glitter designed to make the brain dispatch even more dopamines, and a global/friend achievement ranking... it's no wonder why some people are genuinely addicted to steam achievements.

as for the devs, achievements are necessary for you to add. to dissuade gamers from committing refund fraud (by copying your game files before refunding the game) by attaching the game to an account deeper, to use them as a way to increase playtime (thus making the game more favourable for the alg), achievements being advertised as a feature on your store page... they're basically a necessity at this point.

There's been some pretty big additions hinted at over the years for 6, far more than just "UE5 with a 6 slapped on".

Various features that have been "beta tested" (for lack of a better word) in UEFN and other partner projects are gonna be merged into mainline UE. For example Verse, finally adding a written scripting language back in, as an alternative to blueprint nodes or C++. Also expect tools they've worked on with partners, Black Myth Wukong was specifically mentioned at the time, and ofcourse CDPRs nanite foliage was shown off last year as the first major feature from their collaboration.

There's major overhauls planned for CPU performance, making previously singlethreaded systems multithreaded. The entire engine simulation and gameplay happens on one thread, that will all become multithreaded for major performance gains. Iirc there have been some updates since they teased that already making a small start at this.

Then there's big changes to networking, which is supposedly getting major improvements for MMOs and persistent online projects. Ways to have multiple communicating server nodes, players seamlessly being handed off between them, allowing massive amounts of connected players (to "the scale of millions [...], perhaps even a billion concurrent players") sharing one game.

There's also some more "out there" ideas floated, like a full merge of UEFN into Unreal, essentially making Fortnite another build option next to Windows, Playstation, MacOS, etc. Though in fairness, with the November announcement that Unity would get just that, a Fortnite export option, it just might happen.

the most common sentiment was pretty overwhelmingly:

It's a platformer but instead of the companion gimmick like Nortubel, the main gimmick is a magic arrow that you can use to have some basic interactions in the levels like clicking buttons or picking up an object and move it around.

Got the skeleton of new AI system working, holy shit this was a lot of work. turned into 5 stage asynchronous job pipeline to generate possible actions -> async batched raycast to get and fix correct terrain positions -> more batched raycast to evaluate cover and LOS from every candidate position -> feed candidate action + context into solver for scoring -> execute best action. Right now only scoring for weapon ranges is implemented, so it'll just try to keep a target in it's optimal range + some randomness, but I got a very robust framework to build upon.
