You don't have to date her, but you do have to try to have some maturity about it and at least help her out as a friend. Cathy would probably need to be impressed by James handling something like that maturely so it shows he's not being such a selfish and complacent piece of shit anymore. Mostly I think this should be the case because I feel like whatever bad endings are in store for Ashley, they can't be separated from James ending up with a bad outcome too.
