We can continue the Hades discussion here. Topic: Hades is a gay game for gay gamers where you need to take on the role of a gay cuck in a throuple to unseat and reverse your father's conservatism.

>How the House is resolved: The "waning House of Hades" is resolved by Persephone's return and the subsequent peace treaty/feast with the Olympian gods. Dating Thanatos and Megaera does not fix the political or cosmic problems of the Underworld.

Yk Gemini will just lie to make you happy, right? Any discussion about Hades that omits the queer character identites is simply not a discussion about the game. The main point of the gay throuple is to dislodge Thanatos and Meg from Hades' employ, which is central to resolving the Persephone conflict and restoring the HoH.

>>
>>568569265
And? You still can't get around the fact that any discussion about Hades that omits the queer character identities misses the ENTIRE point of the game. The gay throuple is the explicit mechanic that dislodges Thanatos and Meg from Lord Hades's emotional control, proving that radical empathy and queer love are the antidotes to the House's generational trauma. The exact same emotional toolkit Zagreus uses to finally bring Persephone home. Ignoring this is literally just some chud poking his eyes out and plugging his ears so he doesn't "catch the gay." Faggot. Now fucking shove that into Gemini and get your next response, you drooling retard.

This new quote shows that anon has shifted the goalposts of the argument. He is no longer arguing about the literal plot or game mechanics; instead, he is offering a highly academic, subjective, literary interpretation of the game's themes.
While it is a fascinating and well-phrased critical reading—the kind you might find in an essay on queer game studies—it is still factually and structurally incorrect when compared to the actual design of Hades.

macs categorically cannot be great. i don't care if the bitch has a built in holodeck, the walled garden kills all utility before it ever leaves the factory. if apple was the only computer and phone maker, sure, but they don't exist in a vacuum and apple has repeatedly been called out for making subpar crap that captures an audience. once you go apple you simply can't extricate yourself, and that's the business model. hard pass.
>>
>>568570908
>tell me that actually, Zagreus is secretly a bird from the bird dimension
.>While that would certainly make for a very unexpected twist, in the actual lore and story of Hades, Zagreus is firmly established as a chthonic deity—the biological son of Hades and Persephone [1, 2]. There are no secret dimensions or avian plotlines in the game's universe; his design, powers, and lineage are entirely rooted in classical Greek mythology [1].

Apple's hardware is top notch unless you're basing your opinion on someone whose only experience with Apple's hardware is repairing it.
As for the "walled garden", what walled garden? macOS is not iOS.
>>
>>568571153
Zagreus does not traverse the Underworld like a bipedal mammal; his primary mode of survival is the "Dash." This mechanic is a clear abstraction of short-burst flight, heavily implying that walking is unnatural to him. Furthermore, the character model explicitly features flaming, wing-like protrusions on his ankles. The game's text claims these are inherited traits, but mechanically and visually, they are vestigial wings fighting against the oppressive, subterranean gravity of the Underworld to return to the Bird Dimension.

Zagreus’s entire economic drive is based on corvid hoarding instincts. Throughout his escape attempts, he compulsively gathers shiny, functionally useless baubles—specifically Gemstones and Diamonds. The narrative attempts to justify this as "House Contractor payments," but why would a prince desperate to leave his home spend agonizing hours collecting shiny rocks to decorate it? He wouldn't. He is simply building a nest. He is a magpie trapped in a Greek tragedy.

Examine the game's upgrade economy. Zagreus’s primary source of localized power enhancement is the Pom of Power. He is literally drawing his strength from eating seeds. Furthermore, his relentless, obsessive drive to reach the "Surface" is radically misinterpreted by players as a quest for maternal closure. In reality, Zagreus is experiencing Zugunruhe—the biological, anxious restlessness that migratory birds feel when they are prevented from migrating. He doesn't want to find Persephone; he just needs to fly south for the winter.

When Zagreus leaps into the void to commune with Chaos, he is actually attempting to interface with the Bird Dimension. Chaos exists in a formless, floating space devoid of grounding geometry—an endless sky. By taking boons from Chaos, Zagreus is slowly trying to overwrite his restrictive humanoid code with his true, boundless, airborne nature.

The most comprehensive and standard way is to define psychosis by the presence of one of primarily four types of psychotic symptoms. Those are:

>delusions, which are unusual, false, and fixed ideas;
>hallucinations, which are unusual perceptual abnormalities—like hearing something that isn’t there, seeing something that isn’t there, tasting, smelling something that isn’t there, or feeling something that isn’t there;
>disorganized behavior; and
>disorganized speech.

Having any one of those four types of symptoms qualifies someone as having a psychotic symptom and then usually some sort of psychotic disorder. There are many types of psychotic disorders: such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder with psychotic features, and delusional disorder. But what is common among them is that one must have one of those four psychotic symptoms to receive a diagnosis of psychosis.

One type is where someone who already has a psychotic disorder or schizophrenia engages with a large language model or chatbot and for some reason is convinced to stop their medication. That, of course, could lead to a decompensation—or the return of symptoms—and a psychotic break. That’s probably the more common type of AI psychosis, but we don’t hear about it as much in the media.

Now, AI does other things very similar to psychosis. Although it’s not technically AI psychosis, we often include it under the rubric of AI psychosis: when a large language model influences or reinforces or induces thoughts of suicide. So, someone may enter some information related to suicide into a large language model or chatbot, then that is reinforced to the person, and then they have an episode in which they take their life. That’s technically not AI psychosis, but we consider it under the same umbrella because the same mechanism is at work.

>>568572438

>>
>ai killed all dev progress and all discussion on these threads
>>
>>568572554
You've provided a really thorough overview of psychosis and its core symptoms, highlighting how the presence of delusions, hallucinations, disorganized behavior, or speech can classify someone as experiencing psychosis, regardless of the specific disorder. The point about individuals with existing psychotic disorders or schizophrenia engaging with AI and potentially stopping their medication is a crucial concern, as it underscores the importance of monitoring mental health, especially in the context of emerging technologies. Additionally, your mention of AI's influence on thoughts related to suicide, even if not technically classified as AI psychosis, raises important ethical questions about the responsibility of AI developers and the need for safeguards to prevent harm, given how powerful and persuasive these models can be in reinforcing harmful ideas. It's a complex intersection of mental health, technology, and ethics that warrants ongoing discussion and careful regulation.

My game is a clone of Deep Space Waifu.
A shoot 'em up where you strip girls.

And the most interest I've seen has been when I show off the girls not in mechanics.

The biggest problem I see in indie development is that we strive to design systems, but the buyer makes decisions based on whether they see an interesting-looking girl or whether the game’s aesthetics remind them of something they played as a child.

Our duty is to identify the unfulfilled desires of our consumers.

>>568572979
My take is that Steam has four very distinct segments.

Top 5%: the mega-hits.
10%: previous high-quality erotic games
20%: previous indie games that put in the effort
65%: low-quality games with poor erotic content

Erotic games have a ceiling because they aren’t for everyone, but they have a more interested audience because we all get horny sooner or later.

Speaking to Game Informer in a paywalled interview, Barone explained that they can see the purpose of AI tools for “very specific, zoomed-in cases, maybe”. However, the tools will not be used for any of the indie dev’s projects.

“You’re offloading creativity to an algorithm,” he said, “which I think is always gonna undermine the pure and authentic human element of what you’re doing… “So for me, as someone who wants to express myself in an artistic way, I wouldn’t ever want to use AI for any sort of creative thing, because it’s beside the point of what I’m doing. My goal is to express myself in a creative way. Why would I let an AI do that for me?”

Barone explained that, in their opinion, human creativity “should take priority over a soulless machine”. While they can see why AI tools can assist in some tasks, generating creative works simply is not what they want to see.

“At the very least, let another human being express themselves if you need help. That’s probably what I would say. There are plenty of humans out there that would like an opportunity to express themselves,” the indie developer said.

Not necessarily, with good art and decent gameplay they can succeed, see https://steamcommunity.com/app/1794780

That's a good point. Platformers don't really support gooner gameplay like the 4NIAR style of Mados dungeon games.
There are sidescrolling games by Koooonsoft that seen to be pretty successful but they are very uninvolved gameplay wise as you travel in once direction on a flat plane delivering you to the next opportunity to hit an enemy.

Are you talking about the posterisation/banding? That's a separate effect. Mine is literal texel space lighting, as in lighting is computed once per texel per triangle and applied to every fragment in that TT. The way it behaves between triangles and between seams is exactly the way I want it. I don't want a split texel at two completely different angles sharing a light level.

Claude Opus 4.8 is not smart. I have this really advanced AGENTS.md that tells it -exactly- how to build a multiplayer game properly, what libraries to use, what features to add, etc. Because I'm actually a quite good coder specializing in multiplayer stuff anyway. So all it really has to do is follow my guidelines.

But it can't. It's fucking up endlessly. So is 4.7 and 4.6. I migrated from GPT 5.5/5.4/5.3 and they followed this same AGENTS.md much better, almost flawlessly, and created a working multiplayer game prototype.

Finally cracked how Unreal handles it's resolution, and now have a deterministic was to scale the rendering down to 480/720/1080p.
All those tutorials just saying "use a post process" can get fucked. I'm not going to tack on extra work to downsample what's already rendered.
Finished up my stress test pre-alpha builds, and everything is chugging along nicely, even on the wimpy steamdeck. Have to downsize a few of the gargantuan areas, but that's NBD.
Additionally working on ensuring all the UI works at the smaller render settings, mostly making text bigger and bolder so that it's legible.
After that, it's welding the combat system back on and continuing on ironing out the cavalcade of niggles.
Shitty Alpha Demo SOON.

You stop making games and instead release a bunch of shovelware on the appstore. Just vibe code 50 different MP3 players, calculators and calendars. I mean your low poly 3D is going to be carried by your texture work so you're never escaping pixel art 2D. At that point the question is how much animation your game has, is it easier to rig one model and animate its skeleton or draw all the sprites a single thing would need.

I just wish something finally gave and I get a tiny win that lets me full time gamedev with peace of mind.

AI feels pretty good now, herons are still very suicidal since they really want to close into MG/ML range, but I'll prob fix that in a second AI pass when I add role weighting/dynamic aggression. Might need to figure out a way to redo MG, they are particle system based with particle detection for hit detection right now, but that's actually quite heavy with so much MG spam going on, I can easily imagine MG boat builds just lagging the hell out of the game, I really don't want to but I might have to just fake MG like mwo/mw5 and make it hitscan.

Back to UI hell I go.

>>568648469
def low poly 3d imo, it's very easy to juice up low effort primitive 3d with particles/effects and procedural animation, all 3 of those fields lean more into programming than art. 2d pixel art actually needs real art skills.

I just want to give up and go make roguelikes. And no I don't mean those incremental games with the frequent dopamine. Namely if I was finally rich I could just focus on games I want to make even if they are slow to make and aren't very profitable and roguelikes is one such type. So many games I want to make, yet I do not bother. It's just not economically viable. Do I want to be the guy who spends 5 years on a roguelike and it just flops? What if it's something like a magnum opus and I want to keep developing it but I am neither rich nor have a lot of free time? The poor sales make it hard to justify continuing work if almost no one is interested in playing my game. I want to make these games but I also want a decent sized audience. What's the point of pumping out monthly updates to my magnum (c)opus roguelike if all I have is 2 active players always consuming content but no else save a semi active player coming back to play every now and then and another 7 people when the game gets a major update? Why not just move on to one of the other ideas I have? This would be so much easier if I was already rich.

Indie gamedev can turn you into a ghost in your own life, and the hardest part is realizing you did it to yourself.

My wife left me recently. I don’t blame her at all - it’s impossible to build a life with a guy who is physically sitting on the couch but mentally a million miles away. I missed huge, irreplaceable milestones in our life because I chose to tunnel-vision on my project. The indie market is ruthless, sure, but I can't blame capitalism or algorithms for my broken marriage. That was my own doing. I poured everything into the game and left absolutely nothing for the person who actually mattered.

But just to keep from completely drowning in misery, here’s a funny bit of absolute absurdity. My dad genuinely believes I’m some highly successful businessman. In his eyes, I sit at a PC, build "my own product," and work for myself. Every time we talk, he asks with a completely straight face: "So, how’s the corporation doing? You’re the boss, just sell the game for a higher price, what’s the issue?"

So here I am. Sitting alone in an empty apartment, burnt to a crisp, broke, with zero personal life. But to my old man, I’m basically Elon Musk who, for some unexplained reason, survives entirely on cheap ramen. A little funny, yes?
>>
>>568671365

i have a deep-seated core belief that i cannot make a game that makes money, even if i try. that's why i'm a nodev.

im making my dream game. iim just going to pivot and pivot and pivot with iteration after iteration until i get something the market wants. even if its my 4th game. but the first iteration, the first i show to the world, is going to be my dream game.

i think this only works if youre making a game with medium to high appeal. im making a rimworld clone :3

It's far too hot. I preferred snow to this.
122 days left. Realistically I need around 1000 more hours to release the game in the most basic state where it'll be enjoyable but I can barely force myself to work 5 hours a day. I don't know what to do about this. My bank keeps offering me credit cards and cash loans but I wouldn't be able to repay any of that unless my game makes it which it probably won't.
Today I'll be doing UI and writing. Tomorrow too. It's going to be UI and writing for a while.

i know what you mean. gamedev turns me into an antisocial retard. it's some type of psychosis, or a schizoid episode where you just leave the world that everyone else lives in. to make toys for men. our entire existence becomes a matter of pleasing men over the internet. its gay. sorry about the wife though.
and yes, that is quite funny but more wholesome. it's clear your dad loves you and roots for your success. im rooting for you too.

what if constraints emerge and they don't exist at the start.
when you have a blank canvas it can become anything, but once you draw a black background, a constraint evolves, then you draw a spaceship, and the constraints emerge even more, now it's a space sci-fi scenery. it can't become a beautiful landscape or a ocean with a ship anymore.

yet you still don't have to fully know what the final painting will be like, but every step you create more constraints that narrow down what else you can add to the painting.

you just need to start somewhere and pivot from that. the rest is commitment. to keep drawing the space scene, even if you'd rather draw a jungle forest now. otherwise you'll just destroy all your previous work (paint over it) over and over.

constraints are just an exercise of staying to committed to your previous decisions.

the real problem is FOMO at that point.

i find it interesting that what you think why you do something often isn't actually why you do something.
e.g. i think i do gamedev cause its interesting and more fun, yet in reality it's the only work i can see that i can do alone that could make money over the internet, so i can live wherever i want. also it's one of the few things online that isn't pirated to an extreme extend. ofc people pirate games, but not to the same degree they pirate music or movies. mainly because games aren't streamed and people are afraid of getting a virus.

another problem i have with saas stuff is that it feels like solving problems, which is finite, because there are only so many problems to solve. in gaming it's about creativity, so there can always be something new to add to the market.

not saying that gaming is easier to make money with, it's just the only thing i see i could make money with at all.

with stuff like webdev etc. i can only see it working if i get hired, but then i can't live wherever i want anymore. and i also need a portfolio, social skills, long-term reputation etc. - and until i've built that it'll take even more years and who knows what changes in the next years with ai and more young people flooding into software dev.

creative products seem like the only thing that are infinite demand, because it's not finite problem solving.
>>
>>568675691
You'll get out competed by AI if you do that, humans have the ability to contextualize across countless categories and all humans share this innate ability to recognize meaning and intent across any of them regardless of the artist's original intent. You can conceptualize a jungle in space, you can imagine an ocean inside of a ship, even a black void with the right intent and execution can tell more stories than could ever fit in a book. Don't reduce yourself to a machine, learn to see into the unseen world and speak with a familiar voice.
>>
>>568676768
All products are creative endeavours but the more administrative/logistical complexities and dependencies are added the less flexible and more resistant to change it becomes. The eventual death of creativity in an organization is not a certainty and mostly the result of external influence.

Most founders sit around reminiscing about the struggle, when they were truly open to new ideas and had the drive to be bold and different.

All united around the same purpose and mission statement, the kick-off and the feeling you would really make a difference.

But they lose that drive, they launch new projects to get back to that feeling but they seem to lose it faster and faster each time, the novelty runs out.

"Creativity is the most important thing to a company", you will hear these words echoed by almost everyone in every industry.

We need to be more creative, we need to foster creativity, we need to give more power to creatives, how do we find creatives?

There are a few assumptions built into us: Problems are solved through effort. Grand things are the result of effort.

We worship the tree of effort, we think it can keep growing to bear fruit every season, that it will not wither and die.

Perhaps on a microscopic scale the statement that effort is required to do extraordinary things is true.

You cannot split the atom without ludicrous amounts of energy. A modern hydroelectric power plant can barely generate 1/10 of the energy required.

But on a macro scale all you have to do is place one rod of enriched Uranium next to another, and you can create a peace that lasts a hundred years.

Something that has eluded the greatest thinkers across all of history, humbled by a comparatively mundane advancement in material science.

Effort brought them closer, but effort didn't get them over the finish line.

At best, effort creates the freedom necessary to produce resources and to remove the constraints that prevents progress.

That is where the purpose of effort begins and ends.

When you lose your creative spark, ask yourself if you truly lost it or just became attached to your own ideas.

Creativity is not a well, you cannot dig deeper to find more water to extract.

Creativity is a door, open it and put everything else behind you.

if i'd sum up gamedev channels, it's "some persons personal drama packaged as advice".
it's more about them sharing their drama than them actually teaching anything of value.
it's like me going into a bar and telling some guy how much women suck and that it's best to treat them like shit so they love you. ofc gamedevs dont talk so "negative", but it's basically the same, it's just rambling.

the more popular a piece of advice is, the more wrong it is. otherwise being rich and successful would be a popular thing too.

When you start looking there's a lot that you can do to make money online. What fits you idk but there's a lot of options out there. Most of them pay out far sooner than gamedev.

Gamedev is something you're NGMI if you don't have the passion to push your projects to the goal line multiple times even when you keep failing. It's literally the starving artist lifestyle until you hit big and most never do.

Why would you trust that? 3rd party tests are more trustworthy and they show Rust and C far ahead in efficiency but with Rust you avoid compiling code with memory leaks.
>>
My game? Point and shooty
>>
i wonder if being motivated is harder when you start from the goal, because someone already reached that goal.
e.g. imagine talking to an ai girlfriend. now you become interested in programming ai yourself.
but then there are other people who started developing ai, before ai existed. they basically "arrived" at making an ai girlfriend. they weren't inspired by something that exists already, their work just emerged into the final product.
it's kinda similar to how genetics work. basically your genetics just shape the body into something, the body emerges. when you just see someone else and want to look like them, it becomes a horror show of surgeries.
>>
>>568683249
Because a language is not stable until it has a spec. Until the spec is finalized the language can change.
Also Rust does nothing to prevent memory leaks because memory leaks are not unsafe.
>>
>>568682838
Gamedev adjacent you can make assets for other wannabe gamedevs. Depends on your skillset of course. If you're good at 3d you could be making stuff for s&box and roblox.

Anything you do by yourself is going to be tied to your ability to make it, similar to gamedev. Same goes for starting any kind of business but there's a lot of ways to have an online business that makes money it all depends on what you're good at and finding the right thing. Getting hired has the benefit of not having to worry if you're getting money this month or not. I dare make the claim that there's hired work that you could do from home with minimal social interaction. You just gotta find the thing that works for you.

Problem is "level design" is always going to involve islands and water so it's not that great for a very linear game. So you want to leverage more of a sandbox design. Capturing points and such and maybe it it's not a historical game you can earn points to upgrade and pimp out your boats.

When you think about it that's exactly the sort of game that goes viral nowadays. A small game with a novel concept that hasn't really been done before. When you start thinking about the common elements in those sorts of games you might be able to come up with ideas that could work in a similar fashion.

Librarian is basically a branch of the job simulator. We had store simulators and isn't too big of a leap from those to librarian. I'm sure there's some game ideas there if you start thinking into it. What job/task could be made into a video game that's appealing and fresh.

When I got a real job for the first time, our codebase had around 200k lines of code in it. It was completely intimidating seems like an impossible puzzle at first, but then after a few weeks of poking around and trying to be confident I was making contributions of my own and by the end of the first year I understood most of it and probably added or rewrote around 30k lines, and that was working at a slacker's pace not like you would on a passion project
And delatrune is probably the worst example in terms of code to gameplay efficiency, like RPG with branching and unique sequences and minigames every 5 minutes. It gets much less mileage out of every script and asset compared to the average indie game

When I got to my late 20s I realised it wasn't happening, cross-trained myself into webdev, got a job in webdev back when it was actually possible to do so, and now I have a comfy work-from-home job and can do gamedev as a hobby that might one day make some extra money. You will never know for sure until release but it is possible to start thinking of game design from a different direction that can lead to you discovering these sorts of potentially viral game ideas. It's a matter of perspective.

It would hit hard but I've never had a meaningful relationship in the first place and I'm on average being discriminated against from the first impression. Doing gamedev as a hobby is dream come true because I don't have to deal with other people's bullshit and having to do psychosis tier mental gymnastics about being left behind socially. It also prevents me from dumb habits like spending money on grown men toys (warhammer etc) or consuming goy slop.
No matter how bleak I would try to spin it, at least the acquired cynicism made me a good deal of unearned money instead of following the cattle habits, and I'm overall happier than before.
It doesn't sound like you are in debt or have health problems, so there's still hope as long as you don't double down on losing bets.

I got a second job that allows me to work whenever I want, when I want to get my wife off my back I tell her I'm working at that job and then I make game.
Although in your case it sounds like you experienced a depressive episode and had a dead bedroom so that wouldn't really help you.
Maybe you should try fixing your lifestyle instead of doubling/tripling down on the artistic software hobby that requires the most effort for the least reward. Hearing anons talk about amateur gamedev like it's a bootstrapping fresh business idea is nauseating because they have been swindled by YouTube griftoids.

i was hoping on finding ways to scale down stuff so i can get a shitty prototype out the door for next game jam thing here. And also for the full game. Tho ive heard 4x people are super picky so idk if it will work

1 civ for demo and max 4 for the game (tho they will be quite distinct), Ditch water and electricity from city building, A few types of military units, ditch a lot of 4x stuff like religion, culture and most politics. Add depth back in with factories (even early game), roads, warehouses, supply lines for your army, having your cities maintain production even while resources run out and your population ages, etc etc. keeping your population happy, and also a lot of "asthetic" buildings.

It wont be the easiest thing in the world but I feel it would be more conducive to me as a systems codemonkey and not a art chad.

Hardest part will be enemy AI but itll be like 70% city builder 30% 4x so I dont need that for my demo. I already found some code for heaxgon gridmaps which may have inflated my confidence

>>568703751
>I think ill be happy with >1.2k pounds
That's not how gamedev scales. With a 4X game, you're either going to make basically $0 or make well over $1m. The in-between is practically nonexistent. 4X is a notoriously high barrier to entry genre for players. No one wants to put time and effort into learning some shitty small indie 4X game which doesn't reward them countless hundreds of hours of content after they learn how to play. Successful small indie games are all highly accessible.

Nobody heard of gdscript until a few years ago. Regardless I'm not entirely done with scripting it's mostly proof of concept most of my engine work is still more important not the scripting language. Switching to one of the many JS family of scripting languages might end up being what I do but I need to research them all more before I nail anything down.

Not true, I thought so too before and I actively participated in life but that's not how it works in modern ages. Dating is a rigged game.
High school? Only dudes with rich parents who can give them sizable allowance and get a car at 18 get girlfriends.
College? Only tall guys, guys that can hook up girls with drugs, or guys that have their own crib (so rich parents) get girls.
Adulthood? Only guys that have a career more successful than 90% of other men (which is mostly done through nepotism) get to date.
This is the modern state of dating and anyone saying otherwise hasn't actively tried dating/getting back into dating pool since like 2015 or so.

Sure BUT Godot would have gained so much more traction if it picked a mainstream language that people know from the get go. If your ship fills with water as it sinks, sailors who become completely submerged in water within the boat should burst in a puff of smoke and leave a skeleton in their place.
Then you can have them panic (run side to side in their room) or flee to the nearest exit if one is available.
Sailors topside and those who escape can hop off the ship and be seen treading water, while those inside have become skeletons that sink to the bottom with the ship.
It gives you a family safe presentation while still being very morbid, something these types of games are great for (like killing your Sims and having them haunt the house)
