So is anyone going to take one for the team and apply to clean this place up?

>>568819791Yeah it's probably a lost cause. Most decent people here likely already have their hands filled with working on their game. Ironically it's much more likely for the spammer to apply (and get accepted) and then shit the place up even more, since he seemingly has free time to do it all day.
Added aoe components and shields that decay with passing intervals, as well as added some simple ui around it. Also made it so that untagged health/shield consequences get visualized at the same time. Added a value i call focus for now. When you reach 100 you get a special character specific card into your hand. (1to1 copy from morimens, i like systems like battlerite in which you accumulate a resource you can spend for stronger abilities). Added a placeholder card context window. Ill change it to something more appealing later. Also added modifiers (shield replacing health damage is a global rule modifier). I want to make them serializable as configs and add a simple bleed modifier as a test. (damage increase on direct health damage) After that ill do more movement manipulation components. Pull/Push/Dash come to mind. Dont know if i want to add Strength and Agility. Almost all card games ive played have those values. Id like to have them, but i feel like my combat is a bit too stolen right now.>>568816994Sure. Ill just make a progress post then.>>568799965Youre farther than i thought. Good progress. Id personally avoid doing pixelart characters btw. It clashes with the smoothness of the ship. Maybe you could go for something like Barotrauma and have higher resolution characters (the same as the ship in pixel density) with certain key poses and move the limbs around? >>568819665I decided against it already. Hopefully somebody with more conviction will decide to do it. Too many rules are blurry and i feel like the place should be as non restrictive as possible. I dont mind Ai usage or the occasional shitpost with it either.

why are gamedev communities (reddit/discord) so anti-AI? i understand for art and things like that since generally it looks like slop, but why for code? someone vibecodes something and suddenly they're worse than hitler. one thing is saying "i dont like using it because the code it generates is bad" (debatable, it depends on your tooling and prompting process), another is actively attacking users of AI. and I'm not talking about non-programmers using AI to make shit they don't understand, but actual programmers using AI.sorry for AI-posting im not a regular here but there's like no other place i can talk about this without being lambasted

>>568827343there is really nothing wrong with AI code insofar as the quality. but some of the agents are just neuortic retards that can't take instruction. at the end of the day if you can read the code that was cut, then you're fine. call out the agent, whack his pp, and make him do it right. there's a lot to be said about the sheer amount of lines that an AI can shit out though, so it needs to scale to your ability to do QC. can vibecoded things work? eh, maybe. we don't knopw, long term, but you bet your ass that devs have been vibecoding since COBOL and the sun still comes up every third day.

>>568827343I'm related to an anit-AI dev. I'm running circles around him with how fast my game is progressing vs his. we've both been in the biz for 15+ years. there's no going back, we are not getting any younger. and the up and coming devs won't have the same caveats about using AI. seems completely retarded to not use it if you know what you are doing. I've never seen a good argument for not using it.
my brain be like: "i dont know what i want or who i am"what it actually means: "i know what i want, but it's just not marketable, it's not something a lot of people are interested in, and it's kinda calm and boring so nothing cool or impressive"maybe i can extend this realization and just make a calm boring game that isn't cool or impressive. maybe thats my niche.
>pasting code from unity answers and tweaking it to my use case hoping it works>didn't work>find another snippet on stackexchange>didn't work>find a discussion on reddit from 12 years ago with a still alive rapidgator link with a .rar, that just happens to have the exact thing I needed.I wonder if I will miss those days
>>568828424>I've never seen a good argument for not using it.How about the fact that you are sending your money to rich techbros instead of marginalized trans artists? Then you will get all uppity when they don't have enough funding to make good games.

what i dont understand about jon blow is why he's so much into depth and making something special, yet he's only making puzzle games. ofc i understand that it kinda matches the whole puzzle genre to solve issues etc, but puzzles are not exciting for me.what's really exciting is complex simulations with emergent behaviors. i don't know why he isn't into that.

>>568827343Personally I view AI as just another tool, worth assessing on its merits as a tool. At least for coding, art asset creation is a bit of different can of worms I guess. I think a lot of normies dont like the code being AI made either because they see it as the thin end of the wedge to AI being used for the more soulful parts of art too. That said, if you are a normie, chances are your main interaction with AI is going to have first come from the same type of people who promoted crypto or NFTs to normies (quantum next?), the kind of people who set off every scammer red flag possible if you have above average IQ. AI (like those other techs) are interesting and have there place, but if your not interested in the actual tech side of it you will just see greedy scammers and want to kneecap whatever they are talking about to prevent others getting scammed.

I think making sloppa is ok because the majority of people are just braindead consumer drones. They don't really care about quality or work. They just want to consumeTo them something that sloppa makes in Ai in 5 minutes is the same as someone working on something for 10 years because at the end of the day it's just something for them to consume and forget about in 5 minutes. They don't really care about quality nor they do learn or become better. It's all just consumption and then move onto the next thing to feed an ever growing dopamine. So don't waste your life trying to feed literal locusts

Are there any rpg luddites in here? I want to create a bunch of modifiers, cards, behaviours and whatnot. I made a config system which is basically a visual scripting interface. I have no idea if that is complete overengineering or not. A simple thing that would take me maybe 20 lines is now 10 components. I try to write them in a way that makes them reusable, and it does feel good when it works. But i could and did the same in static classes beforehand. Is it purely a workflow choice between the two? Im not planning on adding any modding compatibility. I switched to this system because putting everything into static functions got quickly unreadable, and got me a lot of bugs. I rarely encounter gameplay bugs now after i iron out the nodes, but my speed is 10 times slower. Should i just see it as a payment to avoid spaghetti code in the future and and make debugging easier?

>>568843693Ultimately it depends on what kinds of skills your RPG has. The cool thing about having everything hard coded is you can make really specific skills that don't generalize or fit a mold and lets you have creativity throughout your entire process.Streamlining it into components you enable and disable eventually pigeonholes you into only making certain kinds of skills. Combining components together with no rhyme or reason is how games end up with the infamous "5% critical damage when standing in poison to undead during the night with slashing damage for 5 seconds". Your system lets you do it just as easily as anything else, so why not? It takes self-control to not have a system like that devolve into nonsense. This is usually a result of realizing that your system now lets you randomly generate skills by just toggling components and you throw away the carefully designed RPG and walk down the dark path of procedurally generated roguelike.

I fired parallel duplicate tool calls that caused silent Edit failures, then twice claimed work was verified when it wasn't — most seriously, the first T5 commit shipped with a dead integration hook because I trusted an Edit "success" and misread a boot log (the auto-boot lands in Hub, not the level I was swapping). I caught and corrected both, and the final state is genuinely verified — but I should have caught them before committing, not after. At text every single model is already castrated and even when they weren't they fell apart once the token count gets past a few pages.Art is a fucking pain to get anything even remotely consistent from where you basically have to train your own models and use that piece of shit comfyui.Only a genuine low IQ retard would be wowed by the end-results as it stands now.The only thing of interest from AI is that it manages to parse human text and garner something close to an intent.

>>568827343I assume they just fear they'll lose their jobs. Yeah for art it is just not great for video games, it cannot generate a good and consistent and cohesive style all at once for all the pieces you need in a game. As for coding, it can do a lot of the simple stuff. Why browse the various websites where you primaroly get an attitude for asking a programming question when AI can answer it and even show you code on how to implement it. Explains why those sites for programming suffered a massive drop off. Why deal with snarky users telling you to look in the manual or demanding you tell them what you need it for despite that being unnecessary to amswer the question? Now back to the art part, it can generate some nice pieces, it's just video games need many pieces and thats wheee it typically loses consistency and quality.

>>568885031I come back every few months for like a week and it's hilarious and pathetic how stupid these kids are.
>he still believes in baitNGMI
>>568885031>>568885313yes and 15% is anons making posts exactly like these
>>568885031I don't get why those posts aren't banned or deleted. I've see stuff getting deleted here semi-frequently.
>>568884335Climbing up the player is cool, but what will he do when he's up there? I would have also liked it if the spider got stuck for a couple seconds when he fell.
>>568885916Yeah there's technically a pause after falling, but I think I set it too low>what will he do when he's up there?Oh you'll see... you'll all see...
I wish there was a place I could go to talk about RPG sheet formulas and rulesets, but no one in any gamedev community has any clue about game design, especially not this one.
>>568886819I would suggest ttrpg places but those are all swarmed by faggots and trannies now. I would discuss it here, but this thread is full of faggots and pedophiles.I really wish "nerd" culture didn't become "cool" at the same time bullying went away because it really fucked up an entire generation of kids.
>>568884335I liked the way he fell down like a big goober
>>568886819>>568887231and what exactly are you bringing to the table? even the AIturd brings more information than you faggots
>>568887649What information do you want?
>>568887817Nevermind I guess, I forgot the thread dies at midnight because the babies go to bed.
>>568886819game design is an abstract thing you learn by sensing and feeling and doing there's not much practical to get out of talking about it.
Aspiring new game dev here, found this thing watching some tutorials on where to start and as a newfag on the subject it makes sense but wanted to make sureIs it better to start learning from scratch the basics of game dev + my tool of choice, or should I go at it and hyper specialize in the kind of games I want to make?
>>568887649>>568887817I'm not the one seething because they don't talk about what I want
>i go to the one place on the internet in which people can post their lolidev progress and then i cry because uhhh i'm moralfagging!!there are plenty of normalfag places you can go to, but thinking we're pedophiles just because we're lolicons is retarded and newfag behavior
>>568888579you should do the general basics of game dev while only using one engine, i don't think it would do you any good to 'hyper specialize' in a genre, not even game dev studios do that.
>>568888670I bet that cosplayer is a man and has a fat cock.
>>568888581who is seething?
>>568888801'risu...
How bigly will my time posting here come back to bite me in the rear when my game becomes the next Motorslice and gets Vice and PC Gamer articles every day? I can't afford getting canceled again!
>>568889407No one cares
>>568889407nobody has ever been cancelled for posting their game in this general.
>>568889407screenshotting this post now, you better not cross me!
im pretty sure im gonna make it
>>568886819is this just an ideaguy hobby or are you actually making something real
how out of place will be victorian/goth/steampunk style outfits in a medieval high fantasy game?
I literally JUST made it
>>568890858thats what im doin. victorian steampunk medieval fantasy. i think its cool.
>>568888898
It's fucking hilarious that you dweebs cant be creative without asking stupid questions.
>>568891768>bochi posterPost your fat useless sissy cock, fag
>>568891389yeah i think both look great but victorian steampunk environments is a pain in the ass to create with medieval fantasy i can get away with mostly fields caves Victorian i will have to create dense towns, machines etc that's why i only want to use the outfits
My dog was carrying a plushie around in her mouth like usual then I noticed that the plushie was oddly rat shaped which I don't own any of. Turns out it was a dead possum or maybe it's just playing dead like they are known to do, I noticed the ear twitched idk. Thanks for reading my blog.
>>568891958I can't jerk off to this, bocchi poster.
>>568891817omg same lol. i only make the weapons and technology steampunk style. everything else just cool berserk artstyle. i fw it heavy
>>568850340Definitely. Either that or asset packs. The difference between assets is too jarring.
>>568888579Pong is the entrance exam. Can you make a rough pong game in a day without a tutorial (though searching things like syntax or how to read a keypress is fine)? If not, that tool is too complex for your technical skillset. You can build a technical skillset inside of the engine, but imo you're better starting off with just terminal programs. The brunt of technical skills are domain agnostic, making a game or a website or a server is a similar process (the technical parts at least) and someone who is good at one can easily get good at the other, so my view is to learn a few of transferrable skills in an environment with less friction than a game engine After that yeah a couple more throwaway clone projects like that will help but there's no reason to do 20 of them the real key is to use your creativity and come up with some projects that are small scale but that you can be a bit passionate about The other key while starting out is to find what you're good at or have strong potential to be good at. There are a few dozen potential skillsets you can bring to a game, and as a solo dev you can't be great at all of them, that's fine, you just have to find your strengths and design projects that amplify them and avoiding your weaknesses. Just keep in mind that no matter what your skills are you'll need to produce at least some code and some visual art, but there are hackish artstyles and logic-light game genres that can help cover you
>>568891801*sigh*
>>568892341Pong isn't really a good test since it's more the software and colliders though.
>>568891801>mfw it's not the first time someone ask me to do thatI'm considering it, but for now try>>>/gif/WTMYWTSC yes, I love that general >>568892458nice
>>568892548what test wouldn't use colliders?
>>568892873oh fuck i forgot snake
>>568892694>WTMYWTSCWTF is that acronym for what seems to be just a blowjob thread?
>>568892873It's not that it shouldn't use them, it's more so that it's not really an in depth coding challenge since it's so basic that most of the effort is through the engine nowadays.A better test is a small RPG of loading in, creating a character, going through an entrance of a small building you start in into an outdoor area and killing a mob and looting it and equipping the loot.
>>568892986not necessarily, I'll post some there
>>568892458gem
>no way to pirate all of rpg maker mz's steam dlc
>>568892458Wife(male) material
>>568820162>Cards>Probably Deck buildingAt First I was interested, your Project looked Like a Turn based strategy RPG .But it's Just another Deck builder. Pity, I tolles my eyes. You can do better.
>>568886819There’s threads on >>>/tg/ on this topic regularly.
>>568893747>TollesI rolled my eyes*
>>568821883Wow it looks like those game trailers they show me on YT.>>568822746Kinda cool.
>>568892694Where's the posting, sissy boy
>>568893129> not really an in depth coding challenge since it's so basic that most of the effort is through the engine nowadays.yeah that's the point you're just seeing that you can operate the engine at the most basic level, like getting into a new car and driving it around the block
>>568894525Operating an engine is fucking meaningless and you won't properly understand how to operate it until you actually try a real project. Pong requires fucking surface level knowledge. It immediately becomes pointless when you switch to what you truly want to make.
>>568893747Understandable. I actually am using cards not because its some roguelike deckbuilder. I just wanted to try out having forced randomization within your moves. You will actually be able to give your characters cards before combat (currently im thinking about 5 or 6 per character) and you always cycle through them in your hand. Your hand size stays at around 6 cards, but there will be modifiers that increase or decrease it. I hope by never discarding your hand it allows for strategically keeping cards in your hand. But if all of that doesnt work out, im fine with switching to normal abilities. Even if i think a normal cooldown system is a bit more boring.
>>568894672if you add a start menu to the pong then it's isomorphic to the project you described
>>568886819sperg to your hearts content friendi will place in your care a few hot takes>noncombat RPG elements are much much more difficult to get right than combat elements, and when they are good enough even bad combat can be excused>splitting damage into a few categories and providing different defenses to those categories is the best way to handle defenses. direct damage is one of the most important stats in any rpg. splitting damage types creates a need for a wider variety of tools without comparing apples to apples (eg obviously, the 33 damage attack is better than the 29 damage attack)>complicated damage formulas are fine and even necessary for balance, but the best ones are always simple to understand intuitively. my personal favorite is "each 10 points of armor is 10% effective health, stacking additively. so at 50 armor it takes 30 damage to lose 20 health)
>>568894792That's neat. Interested to see how far or little you'll go with the randomness.
>>568892250reminds me of when AI turns mspaint doodles into 'good' pixel art
>>568893175>didn't post his dick yet>:(
>>568892250this uses the same graphics as idleon so i assume an asset pack
>>>/v/739927810>pour your heart into a game for many years>it sells moderately well>gaymers immediately make fun of your gameyou cant hate gamercattle enough
>>568897359what I don't get about Mina is it looked like it was fairly late in development in 2022 but still took another 4 years and almost bankrupted the studio to put out. I thought similarly with silksong's trailer but silksong had a much smaller dev team and was way bigger than expected
>>568898092>>568898092>>568898092New thread.
>>568897359it's /v/ thoughever, the whole board is just talking shit about games
>>568897359>pour your heart into a game for many yearsWas that before or after they posted pictures of themselves enjoying life on yachts? I thought you faggots hated millionaires?
