100k at 19.99 isn't too outrageous, thats almost 2m before even factoring in steam cut and other price reductions which brings it down to about 1.1m and then assuming taxes are regularly applied say just 30% for simplicity, then that leaves them about 830k profit assuming they already paid all the wagies. Assumong they did this math prior to reaching that figure than it's not really that high for a game thst long in development. Unlike Jon Blow whos's probably needing tens if not hundreds of millions just to break even...

My only guess is they lacked an ideas guy with the vision and were fumbling around trying to get it right the whole time? 6 years seems kinda long, 3 to 4 years is okay. I've done enough development, 3D but I can see everything they'd need sprite and animation wise in that clip, and I watched the trailers and I'm still not sure what's costing them up to a million dollars unless it's the animated "cutscenes" they've got going on. I just realized how much easier it is to design bosses than levels, and that devs often avoid making proper levels in lieu of bosses. In Cuphead for instance, there's only like 8 normal levels, everything else is bosses. As a player, I typically resent bosses, but they are really the only way to challenge a player that just plows through levels without care. I never realized how important they were.

One tray of useless progress-free blogposting coming right up:
120 days left. 4 months or 600 hours. So far I've spent 1265 hours working on the game and no one's seen it or played it yet. You could say it's a bold strategy but that's gone both ways for me, so I'm hopeful. One good thing I can say about the game is that even if I had 4 more years, I'd still choose to work on it instead of some of my other ideas.
Yesterday I said I was progressing on an important UI feature faster than expected and of course I jinxed myself, so I've since spent 5 hours fixing positioning bugs. That's where optimism gets me. I should just be a doomer, it comes naturally to me anyway.

You should play quake, and make something similar. It basically fills levels with adequately tanky enemies, and it's a bit hard at first, but then the game starts shoving 4x damage powerups everywhere which allows the player to run and gun down everything since you nearly oneshot everybody with the machine gun. It's fun because the game starts slow which sets up the enemies as a credible threat, then during the rampage as a player you feel pressured to be as fast as possible to kill as many enemies as possible before the powerup runs out. You could explore this idea further. I'm thinking about stuff like a "bloodlust" mechanic that doubles your damage several times as long as you keep killing enemies, or maybe have sections where you need to run around and avoid hits to reach a powerup in the corner of the room.

This is why devs put in the basic "beat the tutorial", "beat level 1" type achievements. You can recalibrate the real percentages of other achievements based off those results. Is the player knockback too intense far as distance and speed? Visually its placeholder.
Took me a bit to figure out a semi-not-crap method of adding directional knockback with pixel-perfection, more effort than I thought for essentially nothing noticeable outside of the major 8 directions anyways.
Trying to decide too if the bugs should shout out projectiles upon spawning from the sand pits, in the 4 cardinal directions or perhaps diagonally. Maybe a bit too much this early.

Uh I am making a game with my own engine, it's not that hard.
Learning vulkan's api is much more enjoyable than learning the shitty UI and schizophrenic organization in normal engines.
Things like just having state just be structs you mutate which are then output to the gpu is just very simple and clear to think through, all the whole OOP or event driven stuff is way harder to think through.
Especially w/ ai you can have it do boilerplate stuff for you now and with a full custom engine everything is visible, or you can just ask it to explain stuff as you figure it out.
If you are a competent programmer I genuinely don't know why you'd use a pre-made engine now, if anything it is more difficult.

Solo dev as a rule takes a while anyway due to how much one person has to do. How much of that was making art assets? The music? How much of that was just tuning gameplay systems which would have been hard or even harder to tune in pre-existing engines anyway?
Also part of my post was specifically in reference to AI, there is now a huge benefit to having the entire game's systems be clearly readable and organized in text which is not something you can get from acutal game engines. It also helps with dealing with boilerplate and other things that could be time consuming.

Progress: added inventory/store UI, going to get started on work orders then mission deployment UI, just gonna have it be a roguelike with randomized combat mission as a placeholder before I figure out campaign/career mode.

There's nothing stopping you from data driven development in standard game engine, it's even recommended in unity as ScriptableObject which is just YAML. Bad/obtuse data structure that only lives in engine as prefabs or scene assets are just skill/organization issue.

donut gets hated on but it's fine. you mainly need to learn the interface and generic workflow, and then you can make anything... (badly, but you just need to make a lot of stuff to get good anyway). look up specs for polycount etc for the art style you are going for, analyze other games models geometry, textures etc.
