Their both decent emulators, but Mednafen (use Beetle+Retroarch, not that hacky stapled on Mednaffe frontend shit... the extent people will go to out of Danny Derangement) has lower native lag, run-ahead, shaders and generally all the Retroarch niceties.

I'm only considering Mednafen due to the odds of it having swappable controller profiles. Ymir apparently can't do that and upon remembering I have a Switch Pro Controller, the new button remaps overwrote the old. I was using an SNES controller but just for testing purposes on Sonic 3D Blast and Bulk Slash. No issues with the former (obviously) but I imagine having two sticks would make the latter considerably more comfortable. I do kinda wanna see how many games I can get away with using the "wrong" pad that technically has all of the buttons (ZL and ZR on the NSO reissue could stand in for Y and Z). Only game left to test is Sakura Wars.

Also, you suggest Retroarch and imma nag on which CRT shaders to use. I always get stuck up on that due to lacking a 4k screen, which limits my options for whatever is merely good enough.

RA's weirdass nested UX in the MAME core is AIDS, but it seems to have a lot less problems these days. Runahead is at least some incentive to use it. It's easier to use plugins with MAME too, like mameinfo/trivia, hiscore, etc. I also like Arcade64's search/sorting and random selector.
