According to the Japanese wiki, the Rance IV manual says the monsters attacked first, but then the KR first press book and the Rance VI manual both say the Holy Magic Sect attacked first. Then Rance IX settles it when Freak, who was there, says the monsters launched a surprise attack first.I always understood it as being a monster surprise attack because why would Rune attack before the other toushin were ready? And even the plot of Rance IX makes more sense with that in mind.
