MetalSonic at the end of the day is an Eggman robot, so everything he does is filtered through being a reflection of Eggman's ambitions. Knuckles is more of a friend and a foil than a real rival. They only really fought because Knuckles would be tricked. Sonic and Shadow is different because Shadow can actually test Sonic, and their fights always feel more personal in this respect.

The bit about Rouge being redundant with Fang is very weird to me. Rouge being called a treasure hunter always felt more like hoe Samus is called a Bounty Hunter. Ostensibly, Rouge is a jewel thief. She doesn't fo Indiana Jones style looking for treasures in tombs the way Fang would or does.She is a calling card career thief who takes gems the way catwoman likes cat things.Her describing herself as a treasure hunter is her sanitizing her own thieving ways, portraying it as something more high art than it is, the way The Trickter treats his crimes like a show.The Metal Sonic and Knuckles one ive already spoken about. Metal cant really work as a rival the way Shadow can because he is an Eggman robot. Having Metal be truly equal to Sonic limits Sonic and debases him. If Eggman could truly have Metal outdo or match Sonic, that would e missing the point of Metal's narrative and themes.Shadow be contrast reveals Sonic is even cooler than we thought.
