ok so. whats the deal with the “japan” thing? in flower kingdom there's very frequent japanese cultural imagery, often paired with anime references.) the "garden section" is literally card kingdom, but the trees are cherry blossom trees. flowery has an anime intro, is essentially a joke on bad dubs, and has a "power of friendship" final battle. there are touhou and ace attorney references. the secret boss is a catgirl who has a dating sim minigame and wears a kimono at a mini idol concert while her theme has hatsune miku singing. the whole final area is based around traditional japanese architecture. there are ninja stag beetles and an npc who wears a kimono with cherry blossoms on it. there's a scene where you go to the hot springs. etcone of my main concerns here comes from theming the dark world via the use of things from real life japanese culture (essentially everything mentioned that isn't an anime/game reference) alongside anime references (flowery and pink.) this conflates the two in a worrying way, considering anime is generally a very specific facet of japanese culture that's often targeted towards western audiences as much as japanese. however, western audiences will often view it as synonymous with japanese culture in general (for example, saying japanese suffixes as a "funny anime reference".) anime can certainly use cultural symbols in a way that disregards their original context (not anime, but think of touhou) but it's just different when a white usamerican does it. these are also just very stereotypical symbols in generalthere is also the fact that making a fantasy world that is just japan, or even just has japanese elements that aren't inherently magical (thinking of the final castle just being a traditional japanese building and the magical red and purple trees just turning into cherry blossom trees here) is inherently othering.

I swear my favourite part of the new chapter was meeting all these little comedic snapshots of asgore's memories, trying to figure out who these people could be, only to go on the internet and find that NOBODY noticed ANY of that except for aqua and flowery.
