I was playing Metaphor and I realized again how subversive Gunvolt 1 and 2 are. They are a rejection of almost every anti-racism anime or Jap vidya game out there, including most of INTI's other works save MMZ*. Metaphor does the racism bad, kumbaya stuff. Bad people need to be brought to justice, but that's always in service of opening a dialog. It's very milquetoast.In Gunvolt, the only solution is to wipe out one side. There is no crossover or changing of hearts because they cannot be convinced. The cycle of violence was broken by razing the adept nation and wiping out the radicalized victims of anti-adept violence down to the last child, not by compromise or getting different factions to see each other as people.It's edgy, but refreshing. Copen's and Zonda's approach ends up being the one that the game sides with overall. GV is constantly proven wrong throughout the series and he ultimately gives in to Copen's approach of just killing everyone. *As a reminder, the war with Neo Arcadia ended when Craft and the Resistance fired Ragnarok at Neo Arcadia, killing over 20 million people and nearly wiping out the remainder of humanity. This was not the intended original ending, which would have involved Copy X, the Guardians, and the Neo Arcadians getting a redemption arc, but INTI decided to go for something edgier at the last minute because they wanted to ensure that no character survived so Capcom wouldn't make a sequel.

In MMZ, we get to see Neo Arcadia's oppression and rescue/talk to its victims. In GV1, Gunvolt, Joule, Elise, Asimov, even Nova (if you know his backstory), and later Mytyl all give faces to the victims of Sumeragi. For Gunvolt 2, we don't see any victims of Eden except for Joule and Mytyl, and in the latter's case, they seemed regretful that they were having to do it. In fact, most of the victims that we get to attach faces to are Eden themselves, who all happen to be the most colorful and youthful GV cast. It leads to a very lopsided story. While Eden are killing and threatening innocents, it's happening to faceless people off-screen. It's much harder to sympathize, especially when a bombshell like Desna or a cute character like Zonda converses with GV about the shit they and/or adepts endure. Guess GV2 was always planned to be the edgy game as it started as Copen's game, so there wouldn't be much focus on "saving" people to begin with as Copen finds normies to be contemptible sheep.

Nine Sols' combat system is a bit more involved than CV or Metroid. There's a lot of parrying (actually two types of parries like Sekiro) and dodging, since you're playing as a kungfu cat scientist-wizard. Combat is probably harder than your standard Metroidvania, probably closer to Silksong levels than Symphony of the Night and its derivatives, but level navigation itself is pretty easy.

So is pre-evasion actually a mechanic that Inti is interested in exploring, or is it just a baby mode for kids and game reviewers? I am so baffled by how they handle this "mechanic". They let you play the entire game with it, and then just turn it off without telling in the final showdown? Why? What do they expect by throwing the player in the deep end like that? If dodging patterns is so integral to the game then why doesn't the game stress this at all? Surely there's a better way of helping struggling players, and teach them how to play better? And why not make use of such a system in a series where they want bosses to go crazy and fly all across the screen like Iron Maiden? Surely pre-evasion is one way to allow for that, and yet Inti seems hesitant of making such a system mandatory.
