It's not perfect as there are cutscenes where the game forces your MC to be the avatar no matter what and with some NPCs you can only interact once but it's good to keep in mind.

You are allies of convenience, bound only by your shared goal of survival. That is a deliberately different approach, neither better nor worse than your Normandy crew of loyal forever friends.

Me and my friends finished our first playthrough (honor mode difficulty rules). We were a little sad that XP gains in half of act 3 were wasted. Should we install a mod that increases the level cap for our next playthrough? Fights towards the end of our campaign became kind of easy. Our druid did like 350 damage in one turn in the last fight to a single target. All the characters would put out 100+ damage per turn pretty reliably.And we didn't even really min-max our builds with items since it was the first time playing for 3 of us. We only realized how to make enemies wet and how useful that is on the last few fights of the entire campaign. Even so, a lot of encounters basically came down to mobility - to move on to the next enemy because the guy you hit was dead.

But still, I worry about whatever remains of /bgg/ - the answer that the reveal was to "subvert expectations" was accepted immediately. How many players actually knew who Balduran was without consulting a wiki? How effective is a twist if no one cares? I don't think the writers relied on the player's [History] check, which suggests that it was never meant to be a twist in the first place. The sad thing is that, to a creature that struggles with English, basic narrative choices such as writing an ambiguous character forever remain a foreign concept. Everything is a "nonsensical twist" that exists to "subvert expectations," and everyone must be as one-dimensional as it is. What a great way to approach fiction. It felt like a cheap move to give more weight and historical relevance to the Emperor especially considering the price tag attached to it. Characters as influential as Balduran are always shrouded in a kind of sanctity and one has to have a very, very good reason to hitch him to anything as it inherently alters the lore and potentially the perception as well, not to mention how it might limit future opportunities in multiple ways. I don't think Larian intended to disrespect the original creators or the games with this move but it still came off as if shock value was their primary motivator. I did reevaluate every interaction we had with the Emperor in the light of the new information but honestly? It didn't change much if any at all. I feel this whole thing will go down as BG3's own 'somehow Balduran returned' moment.

They should have replaced Wyll with early access Anders. Anders had a personal stake in hunting Karlach. You would have one companion exclusive to an "evil" playthrough (you can just knock out Minthara). Early access Anders was more sympathetic and less of an outright villain. He was more interesting than Wyll with the same kind of backstory (but he deserves punishment and a rewrite that makes him evil for some reason - coincidently he's white.) He could have embraced being a fallen paladin or become neutral or even good.
