The coolest thing about RE4 is how tactical the movement in this game is. Your range is limited, and enemies usually come at you in groups, so every fight turns into a juggling act of various weapons, melee, and specific positioning decisions. This is completely different from other shoulder cam TPSes that rely more on twitch aim and strafing around enemies. It feels very arcade-like, very satisfying when you pull everything off without failing the sequence. I know this game has a score attack mode similar to RE3, and I imagine it must be pretty damn deep.

I beat both re1 and remake Jill's campaigns, should I play either of the chris playthroughs, if any? Do they add any story bits (aside from rebecca) or alternative rooms/puzzles? I kinda beat most of the games at this point so idk if I should just play as chris or I guess play code veronica

You also get to actually play as Rebecca for a few moments. Some puzzles also have different solutions, though not all of them. And obviously the scenes with Wesker are different.If you're in the mood for it, you can play the game again, second playthroughs are always way shorter anyway.

Finished RE4.Crossing this line in the franchise at last was really interesting. The game is an obvious departure from previous RE games, but at the same time, it's a logical continuation of where the series was headed. The gameplay is just as action-packed as RE3, just on a far larger scale. The story is as batshit insane as in Code Veronica. The visuals take obvious cues from REmake. Even the shooting reminded me of the lightgun RE games, like Dead Aim. RE4 basically took everything this series was up to that point, and bottled it all in a nice mix.Obviously, the over-the-shoulder third-person perspective was revolutionary, and it defined all TPS games going forward. Even games like Uncharted and TLoU owe their existence to this style. But the ways this game is different from all those other games are what's interesting here, because it really doesn't play like your typical Western TPS. It's slower, more methodical, tank controls change how you approach combat completely, and there's no cover system either. And I actually really dig this style. Despite the change in camerawork, this is unmistakably Resident Evil, and that's dope.The setting is definitely the one thing that truly separates 4 from the rest. No Umbrella, no familiar faces outside of Leon and Ada, no zombies in a traditional sense. The batshit insane aristocrat harkens back to CV, but outside of that, this game has more in common with Lovecraft than George Romero. But it's still pretty good. It only kinda falls apart in the end - the entire game is spent worrying about the infection, but then you just randomly find a machine that removes parasites, and it's resolved in two button presses. I also wish you actually got to enjoy the deaths of the villains, I don't like it when bad guys taunt you the entire game, but their deaths are instant and uneventful, there's no catharsis in that. Also, Ashley was surprisingly tolerable as a companion.Now, I'll quickly try the bonus content and move on to RE5.

lmao, they nicked the laser room scene straight from the first RE movie, the door and everything. That's neat.Finished Umbrella Chronicles. To be specific, I played some of it, but Dolphin simply refuses to emulate it properly for me, so I just watched most of the game on YouTube. It's just a solid rail shooter, so not much of the experience was lost.The story is definitely the interesting part here. It basically serves to plug holes in the narrative. How did Wesker escape in RE1, how did Ada escape in RE2, how did Umbrella fall apart, etc. All of it is pretty neat. They also retold some of the stories from the previous games - Zero, 1, and 3. Zero and 1 are fine, super streamlined and simplified, but I kinda dig how they tried to straighten up the narrative of 1 so everyone participates at the same time, even though Barry got cut from the story entirely. The coolest part of those stories is the visuals - seeing the assets of Zero and REmake in full 3D, albeit very downgraded, is cool.The obvious stinker here is 3. First, I have no idea why they even bothered adapting it at all. Multiple other stories tie into 2, and nothing references 3. Second, with no HD assets to reference, that part looks mostly like ass. Raccoon City is nowhere near as cool as it was in 3, it's just some vaguely urban, vaguely gothic slop stitched together from other assets. Third, they removed the story entirely. No mercenaries other than Carlos himself, no watch tower, no hospital, no lab, nothing. It's just Jill and Carlos running through the city, then some nondescript subway, then the police station, then they jump onto the helicopter, the end. Nemesis dies from falling off a fucking roof. It boggles my mind - why did they adapt the story they didn't need at all, only to butcher it to pieces anyway because lol no budget? Why not RE2, since they had all the police station assets?Whatever, Wesker here was really dope at least. Can't wait to see more of him. Moving on to RE5.

Not gonna lie, the bone-chilling terror of living in Africa doesn't really do it for me. The game is kinda fun I guess, but none of it feels anything like RE. I just feel like I'm playing some decent-ish third-person shooter from the late 2000s that tried to mix Call of Duty with Gears of War.

Finished RE5.Man, honestly, I didn't like this one. I have no idea who or what compelled Capcom to think that the next Resident Evil game should be a Gears of War clone, but they sure achieved the objective.In stark contrast to RE4, this game is just profoundly dumb. Gone is the atmosphere, the complex combat mechanics, fun inventory management, manual saving, and the last vestiges of puzzle solving. It's just pure action, room after room, like you're playing Serious Sam or something. And that sucks, because I have no idea how I can even call this "Resident Evil". There's no survival, no horror, no nothing. The saving grace here is that the game's not bad. It looks really pretty, especially the character models, even though most of the environment is just some African shithole. It plays well enough, although I disliked the camera more than I expected. And I'm sure it's more fun with friends, like everything in this world. DmC was also a decent enough action game, but a dogshit Devil May Cry game. I feel the same way about this.The story is also just kinda dumb. Wesker steals the show, he's fun as always, but everyone else is meh. There's nothing about Chris that indicates how much he's been through, he's no RE4 Leon. Sheva is just a blank slate. I was thinking that they might actually have the balls to kill off Jill, but nope, she just ends up with Wesker's tramp stamp on her tits. Charming. Besides that, the new not!Umbrella makes you wonder what was the point in dismantling Umbrella, instead of just having Wesker take over. It's also weird how, when Wesker meets Chris, they both completely forgot the events of Code Veronica? Wesker acts like they haven't seen each other since RE1, but Chris has been aware of him for years at this point.Overall, I didn't hate it like I did CV. I'm just disappointed. After RE4, I was hoping they'll do something more than a safe, stereotypical co-op TPS.Now I gotta watch the movies (two of them) and then The Darkside Chronicles.
