>What the heck is this
/indie/ is the general for all indie games, such as Age of Decadence, A Hat in

Time, Axiom Verge, Baba Is You, Battle Brothers, Battlerite, Card City Nights 2, Cave Story, CrossCode, Cultist Simulator, Darkwood, DashBored, Dead Cells, The Desolate Hope, Disco Elysium, Environmental Station Alpha, FTL, Guacamelee!, Hollow Knight, Knytt, LISA, Lobotomy Corp, Machinarium, Middens, Monolith, Monster Train, Noita, OFF, OneShot, Rimworld, Rain World, Slap City, Slay the Spire, Starsector, Subnautica, Sunless Skies, Tooth and Tail, Underrail, VA-11 HALL-A, Yume Nikki, etc., as well as other games that just don't fit in any other general such as Atelier, Pillars of Eternity, Rayman, and Valkyria Chronicles. /jrpg/ is welcome. Idle games are cool too.

Mobile or consoles, Flash or Unity, freeware or early access. This place is a home for the indie game community and indie and obscure games that don't have a home. So be free to talk and share all your hidden gems, forgotten games and starving devs here.

>Can I talk about games that already have a general?
We mostly discuss games that are not popular enough for their own threads, however, all indie games are allowed. So talk about them if you want, but don't overdo it since you already have other generals for that.

Bitness is usually defined by the CPU general purpose register width or by data bus width. The CPS2 (the arcade system under which Shadow Over Mystara runs) has a m68k as main CPU and is normally classified as 16bit.

As for the best 8bit game, SMB3 is a strong contender.

if you're familiar with platformers it's easy as fuck actually, yeah there's a few proper hard bosses but they're all from dlc so most of the game is a cakewalk
>>
>>573264881
If you like Castlevania I'm assuming you have played and/or would like other "Metroidvania" games (despite the obnoxious term). Some of my favorites:
>Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown
>Nine Sols (hard)
>Ori and the Will of the Wisps
>Hollow Knight (hard)
Other recommendations that come up often:
>Blasphemous 2 (first game is good but isn't a Metroidvania)
>Ori and the Blind Forest (combat is lacking, essentially a prototype for the sequel named above, but worth a play)
>All the Castlevania games, which are available on Steam aside from SOTN
>Hollow Knight: Silksong (very hard)
>Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night (could call it a "spiritual successor" to Castlevania, made by Koji Igarashi, the guy who made all the Castlevanias that people are referring to when they say "Metroidvania")
>Metroid Dread

>>573264985
I'm not a leet pro gamer, so Hollow Knight was definitely hard for me. NGK took me quite a while but he's my favorite boss from the game. I didn't find much of the platforming that tough, just the combat.
>>

Tunic is worth that and more.
Dread Delusion is awful wasted everything potential and I wouldn't play it again if the dev paid me 50 bucks to do so.

Not to get all dramatical but I think if you put a timed puzzle in your point&click adventure then you deserve the slow and painful death of both your games studio and your self.
The worst one still is the very last for the boss in Monkey Island 2 but I am pretty sure that 1 ms time you get to know and click the tiny pixel is so short because of hard coded CPU cycle fuckery.

>IMO no map + huge random respawn radius isn't a good fit for the game unless you play with story content disabled.
Which is honestly something I'm really tempted to do. I wish you could pick and choose to be honest, because traders can be chill
>Cope or ignorance?
Probably the latter? The creatures in the caves were usually mostly an annoyance, except the sawblade guy, but I've only been spelunking like once or twice, usually just dig mineshafts
>>573255409
True, though that still sounds a little tedious to be honest. I've tried different approaches to prospecting ignore the super tight clusters, those were made based on false information about how prospecting works and the one I've settled one is an evenly spaced grid, without even looking at the results much. Just putting a heat map over an area, so when I need an ore I can use the filters to see if I have any hotspots for it.
Without the map I assume you'd have to do more of an "ore hunting" approach, of zeroing in on the highest ore probability
>>573254001
>Playing with passive mobs too for a chill experience
I wish there would be a "territorial" setting or something. I don't mind bears and wolfs attacking me, but I'd prefer if they tried to scare me off first or only do it if I get too close to their home, instead of locking on to my IR signature from across the horizon.
Also more predictable calm rift activity periods, for example for a couple of days right after a temporal storm would be awesome. I want to camp outside sometimes, but it's hard to do if there are monsters about.

Back before prospecting waypoints were added, you had to create your own waypoints and copy the prospecting results. It's exactly as tedious as it sounds. You couldn't even select text back then, so you had type it all.
I always dreaded prospecting then.

>>
>>573281891
The vibes of the world is the one thing going for it yeah. Sadly held back by the game not having any shadows or lightning and thus looking like a kids first source map.
>>
>>573277920
I did not have fun at all. Platforming is dull, combat felt repetitive by the first boss, the healing system feels too lenient, having to pay for the most basic qol at the shop feels tone deaf like there "had" to be a shop but the designer had no idea what to put in there so he just put stuff like "mark the fast travel stations", having to find and buy a map from the cartographer in each area, that problem was already solved back in 1994 in a small game called super metroid and it was still solved in 1997 in another small game called castlevania symphony of the night, if this adds literally anything to the experience on the long term, it's nothing compared to what it takes away from, the game is overwhelming with path choices and all of them are wrong at the beginning which would be fine if there was any way to mark them for later but there isn't until you buy that option from the cartographer's wife. I don't like the timing for pogo attacks, I don't like the timing of small enemies instantly continuing their attack after getting stunned by a hit, it encourages spamming instead of timing, the benches seem to be very far apart and so do the fast travel stations which will make backtracking later an absolute pain in the ass that I don't want to deal with. Also the two bosses I did were not very interesting, 3 attacks, very slow and easy to dodge, give you time to heal so often that you can face tank them and recover entirely but that likely gets better later.

Overall it's just an absolutely terrible onboarding, it might get better later but I'm not playing the future, I'm playing the present and the present is boring.
>>
>>573283339
You don't really need to backtrack at all in hollow knight.
It's a souls-like not a metroidvania.
>>
>>573283339
I mostly liked the artstyle, music, combat. Felt good to play. I like bugs in general so that part appealed to me too. You are right that later the bosses become much tougher. I didn't have any problem with the pogo attacks but maybe that's just down to preference. We are in agreement on the mapping/buying pins for the map - just an unnecessary expenditure.

Aight I honestly believe we are on the gates of a new age for mods and customizations in videogames.
I spent a few hours yesterday running Claude over
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1814010/Stuck_In_Time/
because it's a rather unique idler that sadly has nothing except the base adventure for content.
Anyway I can now load different maps in the title screen, each one of them with their own save and set of instructions, and this fucking thing just spawned a custom NPC with sprite included. Motherfucker even playtests it all on its own.
It can't be too long until absolute randoms can run customizations that are tailored to themselves as specific people, and indie games with established engines (unity, gamemaker, godot, whatever) have fuckloads of examples and info online already on how everything works.

>>573283339
there is some novelty in having to use your memory and landmarks for a change, instead of a map handholding you all the time, I liked that and it hasn’t hard. Not every metroivania needs to be symphony of the night.

I do think the areas are too big and bloated, not that is overwhelming, but there are too many rooms that are just generic filler, feels like repetitions of other rooms, and the map is big, feels like a huge waste of time sometimes, just padding the gameplay

I remember a review for bloodstained who complained the plot was childish and naive contrary to symphony of the night who had richter and dracula having an existential debate on the nature of man.
I thought this was funny, because the Japanese version doesn't have that at all. Dracula just says that humans are evil and greedy and richter goes "nu-uh! we're actually good and generous because we love each other and that's why we work together!".

Personally the only way I managed to get through hollow knight was by being overcharmed the entire time. It feels like the entire game prior to the dlcs was designed with double damage in mind. I'm gonna start hailing some of the other ships I see moving around, see if I can hear any relevant rumors. Before selling anything I took about half (169k) of what I had on hand and made an early payment on my mortgage. Without selling any of the hydras, and missing one Laser Capacitor I hadn't taken off the dolly to fix up, I'm up to 410k. I agree with the anon who like the map. I thought it was a very neat compromise between the fun of exploring an area blind and having to keep a mental map and QoL of having a map, once the former might become tedious.
This way you get to explore the area blind on your first time through (especially without the compass) but don't have to bother with getting lost when you revisit an area after a long time of being away from it.
I agree that combat is probably the weakest part, at least at the beginning (I think the sequel went in a good direction about improving it) and movement is obviously gonna be a bit dull at the start, without any of the movement upgrades. Though I do wonder if it would have been a good call, to give you the dash even earlier or make you start with it.
>Also the two bosses I did were not very interesting, 3 attacks, very slow and easy to dodge, give you time to heal so often that you can face tank them and recover entirely but that likely gets better later.
It absolutely does. You've basically just fought this game's Asylum Demon
I'm also on the same page with >>573284187 what drew me in and kept me hooked for the first few hours was the setting and style more than gameplay, which was enough to get the first few movement upgrades and fight the first boss that's actually a bit challenging.

The asylum demon is in the first 10 minutes of starting dark souls. Not the first 2 hours. And the asylum demon is significantly stronger than something like false knight. Having the hardest boss in the game be the first boss is also a "subversion of expectations" but no one would say it's good design.
>drawn landmarks
There was SUPPOSED to have drawn landmarks, it's cut content. There are only a few very low details and often wrong landmarks drawn on the map. It's a terrible map system that satisfies no one and should have been cut entirely the moment TC decided not to commit.
Hollow knight is a very slow burn game. It's not a traditional metroidvania and if someone comes with that expectation, they will be sorely disappointed.

actually same? you're lost too? same place? lmao
the map doesn't fucking tell me anything and neither does Diana I keep running in circles, like no area that "should be new" leads to a new one. I beat my second? red room and that's it, I'm not sure if I should go all the way back to the start area or not, and if there was like a cutscene showing something opened it was before I quit so I don't remember, it just seems unintuitive.

My fellow indietards. What you consider good exploration in a game especially an indie game or an RPG? Would you consider an RPG that had little combat but a lot of exploration? What would you like to see that you almost never see in these exploration games?
>>
>>573404457
>Would you consider an RPG that had little combat but a lot of exploration?
Yes, but I'm weird.
I like KCD precisely because it has so little combat and encourages you to avoid fights (or at least consider which ones are worth picking). Similar for something like some Stalker mods, actually. I just appreciate that it's kind of realistic in a way, where you also wouldn't just attack every random enemy you see, for loot and XP irl.
As for good exploration, I like Outer Wilds and Subnautica, where exploration is driven by player curiosity. Discoveries feel more earned if it was my own curiosity (and maybe the invisible hand of the game design) that made me find them, instead of a big quest marker and NPC dialogue saying to go there.
Especially Outer Wilds is a good example, because pretty much everything is accessible from the start and mostly gated by knowledge and by you choosing where to go and not to go.
I'm too tried to elaborate.
You making a game or something?

I decided to take a spin in a ship from the Trash Compactor Collection. It fucking sucks.
No shields, and 1 bar of cloak. It comes with a ballistic weapon, 3 damage for 2 power and only 7 seconds reload. Sounds fucking amazing right? But it can't pierce shields, at all, so it's entirely worthless without backup, and it doesn't come with backup. Your sole means of damage is the two-man teleporter the ship comes with. Except your crew are shit too. Two protogen (yes, really) that deal 1.5x damage but only have 80hp, a sergal (yes, really) that TAKES 1.1x damage at 80hp, and a hybrid (yes, really) that deals 2x damage but only has 60 fucking health. And they don't even have lab upgrades.
An early shop to get me some lilyinno ablative armor is the only reason why I could survive sector 1, because I'm still stuck with mostly boarding with these shitters.
>>
Is hilarious entering the hidden gems thread on /v/ and seeing so much shitposting and demoralization there. Lmao, I wonder if the attacks are coming from actual paid corposhills or just shartyteens butthurt that someone is talking about games. Maybe both. Either way an indicator that you need to keep shillings indies at any possible opportunity.

>>
>>573404457
>What would you like to see that you almost never see in these exploration games?
I want exploration to actually be worth something. Tie a reward to it, but make it something meaningful. Not a medkit or a box of ammo. Very few games are able to correctly give the feeling of "exploration being its own reward." So make it something good.
>>
>>573417490
I made a couple and half the replies are retarded parrots spamming "buy an ad." But go make a Twitter screencap thread and it'll hit the bump limit. Fucking nauseating. That board is essentially unusable nowadays.
>>
>>573417490
Eh, I only half agree with that.
I've made some hidden gem threads and there are shilling devs that definitely overdo it. You get a good thread going and instead of letting it die with dignity and letting people play the games for a day or two, they instantly make a new one copypasting the previous OP, trying to turn it into a general of sorts, and antagonizing anyone who complains...
>>
>>573420691
Is that or starting to antagonize people who post there in order to scare them.

>>573421183
I don't agree with this. This is the last day of the summer sale so is natural to have a thread. I personally don't believe that most of the posts are made by devs and not just people wanting for their favorite indie game to have an opportunity in a market that is dominated by dumb streamers and saturated to hell. But even if they were devs, what's the big deal? The whole of /v/ is screenscaps from twitter, drama, e-celeb gossip, shilling for the 400 million gacha looter shooter, and /pol/posting. Anyone who enters the hidden gem thread to antagonize people there when is a thread tha tonly exist like 4 times a year during sales is a bad faith actor.

I was there the first day of the thread and some schizos trying to ragebait anons to reply to them. Is always some variation of insulting the game calling it pretentious/tranny/gay to pick up a reaction.

you joking? I beat the act 2 in 7h or something (unfortunately I didn't record act 2). I started in the weekend.

I just focused in stacking damage with relics + shields for survival (I think its conviction, in the bell skill tree, I am playing in portuguese, so the names may be different), then some move speed (its a game about running against the clock after all).

For skills, I normally go with a spammable main skill (something with no cooldown) + some support skills (like the magic throwing knives that can work passively for more damage, or summons). For relics, I try to focus on the "main" skill and stacking its type of damage.

I got this relic very early on that makes enemies explode with repeating shot and creates OP chain reactions, but I also did some knife (the spinning cyclone skill) and poison builds and did somewhat alright, well, not so much with the poison ones, they are too slow. I got decent relics for the spinning skill (I believe its double knives in english), to change it to lightning and some to stack lightning damage, but my relics for the repeating shoot are better.

You incline toward the quivering mass to try listening to the strange susurrations that seem to emanate from within it.
You hear the meat: The murmurs soutn like longing and certainty, pronouncements bleating about deeper truth, and that which separates good and evil, in many languages simultaneously, and in none. Mind you, inside the EVA suit, it's difficult to hear the alarms going of on the ship when I'm not right on top of them. Hearing anything outside is rather strange.

When I was a little younger I thought it was cool that emulation would allow people to play classics that they couldn't before.
Instead they just watched video essays and waited for remakes while smugly posturing over games that they have never played.

Hey that's me! THAT'S ME! I've been posting and shilling games for years, decades even and I've never played them. One time I tried and I actually hated the four games I've tried! They were just bad!
It was good training for my bachelor in advertising.
>>
>>573498285
>Who's lila
Kinda sucks, it's way too long for what it is and it barely uses its gimmick before turning into a completely linear text. It's like the first hour of the game was designed as a game and the rest was just a novel the writer wrote years prior and got a few illustrations for. It's very pretentious and cultish, not in a good way.
>Look outside
Isn't very long and is pretty funny.
>Lunacid
Is about 15 to 20 hours long and is fairly interesting. It's an action rpg. More action than kings field.
>Bug Fables
It's very good. It's basically paper mario with bugs, the characters are well written. It's roughly as long as TTYD so about 30 to 50 hours.

Are there any other good games that have a similar setting and tone as Exanima and Fear & Hunger 1? And by that, I mean delving into a dark fantasy dungeon, that holds a rich history and horrors in its depths. Arx Fatalis is another, but a little less dark tonally.

Besides my rogue trader being a sexpest out of the blue, and the strong independent black woman as the boss of the man at arms of the ship, it isn't too bad so far.
I hope this navigator can be recruited. supposedly she hasn't even reached her coming of age, so she is a jailbait. Which is very good.

But in terms of styling I feel very limited. Basically the only options I have are tying all of it back or tying some of it back like picrel and that's about it.

Which fallout game would they even be talking about? Fallout 4 I guess?
You spend 90% of 1 and 2 wandering the wasteland or caves or underground facilities because most of the game isn't in an urban environment. Same for new vegas.
You spend a lot of time in an urban environment in 3 if you're going with the main quests but most people agree that the capitol part of the capitol wasteland fucking sucks to navigate and play in so they avoid it anyway.
I suppose 4 has the least bad cities and they're a pretty large part of the map.

The first urban fantasy were trashy vampire romance novels and the term was coined by people who didn't want to admit that they are reading trashy vampire romance novels. Then writers started writing books that aren't trashy vampire romance novels, but set in a similar setting to them so the term expanded.
There's probably as much argument about what is and isn't urban fantasy as roguelikes, but the key points are:
1. It's a fantasy so it has to have magic (which disqualified all the reddit suggestions)
2. It has to take place in a modernish setting which is a bit vaguer. It doesn't actually need to be urban environment, Buffy, the Vampire Slayer and Persona 4 are considered urban fantasies even though they're set in small towns. What exactly is modern isn't clear either as some would argue that everywhere from the industrial revolution to sci-fi is fair game.

I feel like it's a very underrated genre, at least in the west. I think there a bunch games from Japan that fit the bill, they even announced a new one not to long ago, forgot the name but I think it was by some known dev.
But I can hardly think of anything western, except maybe Harry Potter and even that's a stretch, considering the modern day part of the setting is mostly a backdrop.
I wish it would be explored more.
>>
>>573604136
I expect it will fall somewhere on the spectrum between a full on free form sandbox like Voices of the Void which would probably be way too ambitious and No one lives under the lighthouse, which is basically just: walk from predefined point A to predefined point B, interact with a thing, watch something happen, repeat. Which was still a nice experience given the setting, but playing it made me wish for a proper lighthouse keeper sandbox game or something.

Sometimes it's easier to shape plates than ingots and you can automate plate production.

Though I don't quite have the infrastructure to automate anything yet and the boat is meant to take me away from this place to start new, so I'm not planning yo build it. But thanks for the advice regardless.

It's a niche game, so if you'll enjoy it will depend a lot on your taste.
Does a chore simulator sandbox in a horror setting where one of the scariest parts (at least for the early game) is being isolated in a facility that gives you the eerie feeling that something you can't quite name is deeply wrong about it sound appealing to you?
Also as a fun bonus, it's a clean-up game. But why I love it, while being baffled by why people would enjoy some of the other cleanup games I've seen, is that the cleaning is optional and also put into context by the fact that you're cleaning up and restoring the place that you spend most of your day in. To me personally it was insanely satisfying to slowly stop having to wade through knee deep trash on my way from the bedroom to the office to the garage and back to bed.
Also also what I find is interesting that (at least early on, I haven't played the game for long yet) a lot of the spooky shit just happens whether you're there for it or not. So to an extent you have to seek some of the horror out, to experience it and it's this really nice tug of war between the fear of the unknown and your natural curiosity that few games I've played have been able to achieve.
Plus the sandbox is kinda wild, you can do anything from mining crypto to planting your own garden.

So, I picked up Rusted Moss during the sale. I'm about 1.5 hours in and having trouble with some possible dead-ends, and wondering if I would do better long-term if I got used to one of the non-default modes.
I tried them all out, and I can see that it's going to take me a while to get used to whatever new mode I switch to, so it's worth asking: which is the best grapple mode?
(Pic related is the default).
>>
>>573627360
That's strictly a matter of preference. I'd say just mess around with them and go what feels best to you.
If you know the the tricks there's little in the game that's actually a dead end regardless of what items you've found, but if something seems impossible to pass "normally" then it's probably made easier with something else you can find.

At first, shit is spooky, you don't know the map and the base seems unsettling, but then you get used to and shitfest begins. The map is tiny, very few places of interest, no cool deep mysteries, very few interesting signals. As a sandbox there is nothing craft or build.
Food is not a problem at all.

I kinda hate how many indie horror games nowadays are like the second example
>just walk here and interact, then walk there and interact
>select a dialogue option but the NPC will give you the same answer no matter what, and what you choose will be of no consequence
it's less actual gameplay than your average visual novel, just make an animated short at that point
>>

I chose third option and never looked back, it's just more intuitive to me and it worked great. It's very rare but there will be a couple of times when you'll want to throw the grapple and retract it immediately, and for that the detach on release is objectively superior, idk why it's not the default option

I just vaguely remember putting it there while watching a video about upcoming farming games or some shit and being in just the right mood to feel like this might appeal to me, even though now it's kinda baffling. I mostly just keep it there, in case that mood strikes me again sometime after release.
Other than that I'm gonna assume shit like Stardew Valley counts. I've recently played the Songs of Glimmerwick Demo and it looks cool as shit, but I think my issue with games like those is that I wish they were more challenging, especially while working your way up from nothing in the very beginning. Which I understand is probably antithetical to the cozy in cozy-game and I do have weird tastes.
But I just think the cozy would hit different if you had to actually work for it.

Yeah it sucks.
To be fair I can understand why games like that (including shit like Firewatch) exist. Younger me pretended like they don't have a right to exist and people should just make a movie, but I can see that playing out a story, even a highly linear one, where your input realistically doesn't matter, still has a different effect than just watching a movie.
But regardless I dislike how massively some of those games get praised, when they're barely scratching the surface of what this medium can accomplish
>>
>>573675327

at least Firewatch has a nice environment to roam, good voice acting, and a decent length. So many horror games nowadays are shitty 10 minute on rails experiences thrown together with free asset packs, terribly written dialogue and a stupid story, and they feel like they are made for streamers so they can pretend to be scared by the usual "character comes at you at mach 5 but they just want to talk" jumpscare for the millionth time

Yeah, I think I'm lucky that I didn't get overexposed to the sheer breadth of these kinds of games.
I picture PS1 graphics in my head as you're saying that, and I think I've only played like 2-3 games (Paratopic comes to mind) that are like that and I think they all came out when this trend was still very fresh or at least fresh to me, so it actually felt like someone making the best out of their limited resources to make a game that's weird and spooky but for understandable reasons short and very limited in terms of gameplay.
But now when I scroll through horror games for October, I can't throw a stone without hitting one of those fake PS1 games man

Also not long ago I saw a video of a streamer playing a game that for once was high effort and actually asked you to think (Care) and he quickly got frustrated and annoyed because he couldn't just go through it mindlessly and quickly as usual. So I think that streamers are to blame for the sea of slop that gets made, because they encourage devs to make dumbed down, streamlined experiences that they can entertain their audiences with effortlessly

Huh, I thought people praised it as being one of the poster children of the genre.
I played like 30mins of it, but just wasn't in the mood for that kind of game at the time. Though of picking it back up recently, but with 1.0 around the corner, I might aswell wait for that.
>>
>>573708474
I like the sailing and farming, but I really hate mining, and it makes me dislike the game. You have to craft stuff, and then upgrade it level 3 to get a chance to live in the next biome.
Not as bad as Windrose but still very grindy.
>>
>>573258973
Did I get baited by the marketing of Megabonk?
That game is objectively a worse vampire survivors in 3D. Sure the models are kind of cool and the music is well done but the gameplay itself is even less than vampire survivors which is already barebones to begin with

According to the lore monologue the tutorial derelict hits you with
>K-LEG receives one ship a week, every week, from anywhere and everywhere in the system. It has for almost fifty years. With a full head of steam, Ayotimiwa can just about process one ship a week. Following exigencies of labor and best laid plans, there are now hundreds of ships in a backlog so long and convoluted that they would never see another human soul, let alone the inside of the breaker's yard. That's where you come in.
To that end, you start out in ~800k--1m debt for the starter ship you choose. There's a small handful and each offer differing difficulty to start. There's a fairly active security force and the fines can come at you fast. Faster if it's glitchy. Anyway, hyper-capitalism dystopa makes you jump through hoops.

Well, I finally beat Eigong after maybe two hours of attempts. Unfortunately I didn't do whatever was required to see the secret ending so I did not get to see her final phase. Bittersweet victory. Excellent boss, and one I can only imagine is made better by seeing the complete version.
>>
Couple of (negative, sadly) impressions on games I've played due to the "hidden gems" threads during the sale:

>Zexion
Best of the bunch, competently made old-school metroidvania. Difficulty is poorly balanced and late game is all about spamming rockets/bombs (boss fights become simple damage races) and grinding for them afterwards. Quit after getting the plasma and giving the Split Titan a couple of tries, was already annoyed by the ice world platforming and subsequent boss fight.

>Lost Wiki: Kozlovka
Simplistic, predictable, and not particularly interesting deduction game. At least it didn't overstay its welcome.

>Exophobia
FPS/Metroidvania with poor gunplay that actively tries to hinder you from exploring. You can only look at the map for a very limited amount of time between savepoints, and when at crossroads it's common for the door you pick to lock behind you so god knows when you'll be able to explore the other paths. Quit fairly early so it might get less annoying after unlocking some upgrades.

Not really. It's not poorly made, mind, but it's very easy, the fill-in-the-blanks puzzle solutions very immediate. The plot twist you see it coming a mile away, and the writing/story isn't particularly engaging.
It's fairly short (2/3 hours at most), so you wont waste much time checking it out if you're curious.

Spore, Surviving Mars, that one flash game I can't remember where you have to set up an entire ecosystem...

I played Trails in the Sky 1-3 and consider it pretty much my favourite jrpg.
Played Coldsteel 1 and 2 on launch and they were so bad I forever dropped the series and still get PTSD everytime I see a japanese school setting in any media.

Pals are cute but the unfinished ark gameplay is a serious turn off. Not sure I return to it.

Yeah, the game suffer from the same issue ARK did: not enough skills points to buy everything, so you can get cucked and dicked in the ass by picking the wrong engrams.
But at least I don't get killed by rabies-infected raptors or T-Rexes.

Decided to give Ostranauts a fair try this time. Still hate character creation, went through the tutorial derelict easy enough, got exhausted bashing cigarette butts to -1370% health, realized crimes seem to only matter if you're seen so I spent an hour hacking every room and stealing their furniture to sell.
Still runs like liquid ass.
