The fact that people think Susie is either being brainwashed or having a psychotic break is a pretty good tell for how poorly handled and rushed the characterization is. For a game that's taken years to complete, there are a lot of elements that feel very rushed, and others that are being deliberately held off for what I can only assume are to milk as much melodrama and hype as possible out of the scenes they're exposition dumped in later. Undertale could get away with this because it was a shorter story that could be completed in a day, and it made so much better use of its time than Deltarune has.
