It's true. I've read the Gamefaqs threads. Most people were helpful and spoonfed struggling players while some shitposted. But he's right about the new games removing too much friction killing game discourse. I would also add the prevalence of guides to this problem. Nowadays you just go to Reddit or Discord and find an Imgur link telling you what sets to use at all times.

Unrelated but similar, but the only buddy willing to play monhun apparently got carried (literally just barely 100 hours in rise for like level 500s on anomalies that I assume he got hard carried through) all the way to high level anomalies by a group of rise speedrunners that got him into it. Now that its just us playing, he struggles a lot of with monster hunter and touts world as the worst thing ever (he says its "because the characters are so ugly" but he got walled at anja and just hates old monhun gameplay) while wilds is amazing apparently. I'm struggling to complete higher level wilds quests with him and don't know how to change his mindset about monster hunter or if its even possible.

for me it's the clunkyness. oldgen has its charms, but the controls are nowhere near as precise. one example the timing for a roll after a GS slash. if you don't roll instantly, the hunter will be locked in the pickup sword animation, like some retard. in world you can delay the roll and time it properly. also holding down the button doesn't queue the input, so you have to spam the button. sure, the resource management is tighter in oldgen, but there's also objective improvement in fundamental mechanics

I played rise, here's my blog post about it.
I like the dog and I like that I can run to a monster fast now.
The wire jumping shit that replaced the claw is alright.
I like that it looks like a PS2 game, reminds me of old games.
I do like music, I think it's better than in world.

I don't like armor sets, they look like cheap Chinese plastic toys of power rangers.
I feel like attack animations were more fluid in world. Effects also were a lot more clear, which is surprising, considering how cluttered and over the top world is visually.
I don't like the interface, it looks like a mobile game.

going thru FU for the first time, I'd been sleepwalking through it because I did all of mhg village before playing this game but yup tigrex is fuckin intimidating in a game where he never gets tired especially when I deliberately kick him awake and have to fight him in this narrow ass hallway

really funny/cool idea for a monster design that's harder to appreciate when he shows up in newer games, he literally just does the most basic shit every old gen monster does (charge you with bullshit hitboxes and bullshit roar stuns, throw a projectile sometimes to cuck gunners) but supercharged and no gimmicks on top of it, he's like the star platinum of old monhun design
