It feels earned, and it's narratively satisfying to watch Leibniz being offered redemption and abso fucking lutely taking it with all (s)he has.This is doing the brooding anti-hero archetype justice. Leibniz learns from his mistakes, re-evaluates his worldview, and steps up to protect others without entirely losing that snarky, jerk-with-a-heart-of-gold attitude.It's such horseshit Copen was denied this development, especially when the SAME writer is handling both characters. The simplest explanation would be that he just loathes Copen, in which case fair enough, but then hand it over to someone else, or make a new main character you actually care about.
