I'm going to Alice edition.

>What the heck is this
/indie/ is the general for all indie games, such as Age of Decadence, A Hat in Time, Axiom Verge, Baba Is You, Battle Brothers, Battlerite, Card City Nights 2, Cave Story, CrossCode, Cultist Simulator, Darkwood, DashBored, Dead Cells, The Desolate Hope, Disco Elysium, Environmental Station Alpha, FTL, Guacamelee!, Hollow Knight, Knytt, LISA, Lobotomy Corp, Machinarium, Middens, Monolith, Monster Train, Noita, OFF, OneShot, Rimworld, Rain World, Slap City, Slay the Spire, Starsector, Subnautica, Sunless Skies, Tooth and Tail, Underrail, VA-11 HALL-A, Yume Nikki, etc., as well as other games that just don't fit in any other general such as Atelier, Pillars of Eternity, Rayman, and Valkyria Chronicles. /jrpg/ is welcome. Idle games are cool too.

Mobile or consoles, Flash or Unity, freeware or early access. This place is a home for the indie game community and indie and obscure games that don't have a home. So be free to talk and share all your hidden gems, forgotten games and starving devs here.

>Can I talk about games that already have a general?
We mostly discuss games that are not popular enough for their own threads, however, all indie games are allowed. So talk about them if you want, but don't overdo it since you already have other generals for that.

Jak and daxter... Kinda mid actually. Double jump timing was too tight, bad combat, hilariously restrictive health recovery system, passable at best driving, video game story, boring and unnecessary power ups.
Feel a bit like a step down compared to crash bandicoot in basically every way.
Ironically, there is another game that basically copied the entire idea but did it way better 2 years later. Rayman 3.
Does jak and daxter 2 improves on the first game or at least does something interesting?

>Double jump timing was too tight
git gud

jak and daxter 1 is really amazing for the seamless interconnected world and animation quality. animation is still better than most modern games. they got that pixar quality out of a PS2 somehow.

I never want to see another one way drop or "squeeze through this tight narrow passage to give us time to load the next bit" when jak and daxter exists.

I liked the fact there was no visible loading screens and the animations and arts were cool, voice acting wasn't bad either. But that's presentation. Good presentation doesn't really change my opinion on the game itself. Persona 5 has incredible presentation but it's a complete garbage game to play.

I wasn't a fan of the first one. It felt like it was trying to be Resident Evil and Silent Hill at the same time without anything that actually made those games good. The second one was a much better game that had a lot more of it's own identity so it is a shame that it ended there.

I thought I was going to be cheeky. I thought I'd take a gig and slip on over to Zhonghuamen Terminal via the PASS and make a quick bit of cash. I was not aware there is a 15 hour turnaround time for the next shuttle to come and get me back to KLEG. I tried to super fast forward and died. I'm guessing to the Chemical Pneumonitis it had warned me about, but the cause of death was not outright stated at the game over screen. After reloading a couple times I got the sec recon gig again and PASSed on out once again. Found a gig to investigate a death on the ship I'm wanting to buy. Hooo buddy.

I always assumed doing a grand strategy game during that time might be hard, because map painting doesn't hit the same if you just expand economic zones, military alliances and fight the occasional proxy war. But if by making you play an intelligence agency, instead of a country I can kind of actually see this work

Nice, reminds me of playing Fallout 3 for the first time and coming across a location called minefield. It's a small abandoned town full of hidden mines, so exploring it was pretty tense, as you try not to get blown up, plus I didn't know what to expect from the game yet.
Turns out there also is a sniper in that location, but I didn't know that at the time, so I it was just aery have some of the cars randomly catch on fire and explode when he shot them. I have no clue if he's programmed to shoot them on purpose or if he just missed me and all the stars aligned to create an unforgettable experience in a mediocre game

Alright that's the last Broken Sword also beaten.
Gotta love how for 95% you are combining tape with a coin to create a thingamabob and then in the last 10 minutes you suddenly use the power of christ and god to prevent the birth of an ancient being that will destroy the world and universe.
5 was good again but I wonder how much 4 being so dogshit and like from an entirely different team plays into that perspective right now.
Good long series to get into if you haven't yet as point&click adventure fan and cheap too...except Broken Sword 1 which you could get on sales for less than 1€ got delisted and now there is only the 30€ remaster.

>>574706697
Yeah. The gravidar is hard to explain in words, but it isn't a circle by design. It's kind of like a 3/4 projection, where if you were driving on a road and saw five dots in a vertical line "up" on it, they'd be the 5 cars in a row straight in front of you.
The straight lines on the symbols are showing how far above or below your flat plane they are - line up = below, line down = above.
It's way more intuitive than it sounds.

>>
>>574708839
Interesting, changing it to actual 4:3 resolution in the game's settings make circles into circles in screenshots, but in-game it looks identical to the 16:9 proportions, which means the "native" 16:9 is stretched to begin with.
I think the game is natively stretching the resolution internally instead of banning 16:9 outright. What a janky hack of a fix.

>dev makes incredible game
>follow-up is bad, cancelled, in development hell, or caused the studio to implode
Even without all the issues that plague AAA, why does this keep happening?
>>
>>574777189
Most people in this thread have made zero games, period. Think about the gulf in time, energy, persistence, and luck between that and finishing your first game, even if it's bad. Now think about the gulf between that and making a game that's actually good. There's yet another gulf between that and doing it again, and the gap gets wider each time. No one's output is going to be 100% bangers, and the smaller the team the larger the odds they can't weather a failure. Hell, the smaller the team the larger the odds that they just straight up run out of ideas that they're able to competently execute.

having the imagination and passion necessary to make one good game is already more than most people get, having the creativity and talent necessary to make multiple ones is even more rare. I also think that devs nowadays are scared of making simple, honest to god sequels, they always feel the need to reinvent the wheel or to start from scratch with something completely different and it rarely bodes well

I'm pretty sure indie devs actively recommend against sequels in general. If your game did poorly, you don't have any goodwill or momentum. If it did well, you're better off using the resources and experience to try and make something new rather than something that will only interest people who were fans of your first game. Sequels were the bread and butter of 2000s AA who could rely on pure volume to keep them alive through a stinker, but for indie devs that are forced to buckle after one failure they have to keep pushing forward and outward, constantly.

>no more side games
>worst, the game dev downsized dramatically some time ago and fired people like the og character concept artist
>game series I just got into isn't really dead but you can just look and see a timeline of it coming out, getting big then struggling and shrinking as things get worse even as it peters along now

probably wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for the fact i have a propensity to get really interested in indie game stories when they hook me even when the game's community doesn't give a shit and devs don't care as much as did at one point in time
