So, assuming it's real, I guess the suits are worse versions of the black coats, and they need those tethers to return to the realm of light if they fail to cross over to unreality from the astral plane. In fact, thinking about the astral plane, we know that it's filled with memories and emotions and that the heartless were using that to cross over into Scala in ML. Distortions also pop up in Scala that people were using to travel into it, so why shouldn't they also show up on the other side? It makes me think, since we know that the Astral Plane connects existence to non-existence, perhaps it could be a bridge into unreality. Also, if heartless travel from the realm of darkness into worlds via the Astral Plane, perhaps that explains why some of them change their looks to suit whatever world they enter; they're absorbing memories or emotions that shift their forms? It's a bunch of speculation, but it makes sense to me.

Reminder darkness didn't exist in Quadratum until the good guys arrived with some inside their hearts. That same Heartless would probably be a boss fight that one person, or SDG, could defeat without much trouble before moving on with their day.
