D2 enemies flinch from bullets wizzing past them, I believe some enemies also had a visual indicator for their health where they would look more beat up as their health got lower. Honestly I think D2 does still have the same AI quirks as D1 but you never really see it because you kill the enemies very fast and most of the time they are just spawned out in the open.

For melee builds there's alot you can do but I would highly suggest prismatic so you can focus on shotty damage. Idea is your ranged melee can kill and weaken enemies as needed and give you devour. It also contributes to dark damage. Meanwhile when you need to charge light just do your arc slide melee to kill everything around you and charge it. Obviously going to prismatic mode will allow you to spam melee but it can also help with debuffing so you can shred everything with found verdict
