Avernum is probably the best mechanically and has great worldbuilding but your characters are the "make your own generic party, their personal stories are irrelevant" type. Avadon was really good too and more focused on your character and the choices you make, it's one of those rare games where I've actually thought long and hard about whether my character would choose to fight the scary npc and what it really meant. Queen's Wish has a really flavorful premise and some good character moments but it's the weakest mechanically and got cancelled and had the last planned game be replaced by a shorter dlc because it sold poorly, also have a bunch of pet peeves about how various choices were handled but I don't regret playing it.

Avernum games have the feeling of exploring a strange world with making a big choice near the end but it mostly feels like travelling around or a long mission going to wilder and wilder places until the very edge of the world (really liked Avernum 4 for this, just the thing where everything got wilder and/or bleaker as you kept going). Avadon thematically is like a mix of Geneforge and Tyranny in how you're the agent and enforcer of a scary power (not evil-evil but everyone on every side is pretty bad here) and what you're actually going to do when you have a choice about it and whether you're willing to risk everything. It also feels more mission focused than the open world feel of Avernum and you get party members with their own quests sometimes.
