I love fan games and how much the fanbase loves Sonic. However, fan games (and fan works in general) are intrinsically linked to aggrandizing certain aspects of Sonic. Even when there are no ill intentions, that which is excluded and that which is exalted in the work is a direct representation of what that person slash team prefers about Sonic.

Joeadok is a great example of someone who has a vision of what Sonic should be, that goes against what the fandom and SEGA both want, and ends up being one of the best sonic fanartists because of it. His vision actually is better than what we've gotten, or what is discussed. His art is the REAL "sonic cinematic multiverse franchise" that SEGA is trying to force. Everything is canon, but never overexplained so all of his pieces of art makes you theorize about how the various fragments of the franchise, the archie, aosth, game, etc. canons would all fit together into one coherent universe.

It's hard for me to look at his art because it just makes my heart ache for what we could have had.

I don't really have one. I like that they're always trying new things and attempting to refine old ones. They had a bit of a period where they found something that worked in boost and seemed afraid of trying to do much with it, but I'm glad they get back up every time they stumble and believe in the series. That said, ideally they'd work on porting more of the older games to modern platforms, either in collections or as updated ports (preferably not remakes/remasters). But they said they're not very interested because it takes resources away from developing new games.

I want a 2D game, where you hold R to begin physics mode, and let go to do anchor mode.
When you're in physics mode, you control like classic Sonic, you have slow acceleration and high top speeds, and slopes greatly affect you.
In anchor mode, you control more like Megaman, where you have a consistent speed, and reach it the second you hit left or right and slopes have almost no affect on you.
Physics mode can be used for flying though the stage, and anchor mode is for fights, button puzzles, hitting switches. Etc.
You can run up a slope in anchor mode then switch to physics mode when you go down hill, alternating to optimize your time.
Health and energy is restored from collecting rings, but you no longer drop rings when you are hit, instead you lose health.
Energy is a character specific system, with sonic using it accelerate, tails for extra flight, Knuckles can do some crazy attacks, etc. etc.
Full energy allows super state, and slowly drains, recharging by just a pip when you collect a ring.

Many games after 06 were a notably bad (the Wii games) or tried to capitalise on "Sonic was never good"/"Sonic's shitty friends" discourse (Sonic 4), up until the disaster that was Boom.

Generations was an exception, but it's then followed by Lost World, Sonic 4 Episode 2 and then Boom. So it's hard to consider it anything other than a short period of grace.

Things haven't all been great since Mania in 2017, but they've been better than the decade before it.

As one of the young retards that bought a PS3 and this game at launch, I can tell you what happened.
I was a young retard who was unable to think critically. I was distracted by the updated graphics, music and "hype" around what was effectively a new era of Sonic on the next generation platform. The constant loading, bugs and terrible slowdown never annoyed me because I was a young retard and simply ignored them.
I'm sure there were many other like me.

Going back to it when I was older, the flaws presented themselves immediately.
