The Wheel has turned once again

Dominions is a fantasy turn-based war game created by two dudes. One of them is a teacher.
The game combines a simple presentation with an extremely wide array of strategic options, including over 3400 units, 1100 spells and 400 magic items. Turns are resolved simultaneously, with players planning battles rather than directly controlling them. It has simplistic graphics but is easily moddable and extremely deep.
Basically, it's an autist’s wet dream of a war game.

https://hinaserver.net/game/79

Will be starting next weekend.
Now with a couple improvements. Water nations accepted (although the arena stays dry, but Therodos and whatnot can join in), more gems mod, gemgen items mod so the first to arrive to the arena doesn't run out of gems if they have to fight multiple battles, and better structuring to prevent the general "when exactly is the final battle chaos"

can you elaborate im #retarded
>>
>>575306596
Make dwarven hammers with Earth 3
Give them to Warrior Smiths who will now have forge bonus 3
Craft items to give to shamans for 2 gems per item.
You can give a commander 15 gems worth of items for only 6 gems. What you give them depends what you are fighting.
You'd either want a 1 hand weapon (coral blade/frost brand) +shield and armor
Or maybe a 2 hand weapon (Greatsword of sharpness maybe) and armor and a hat. Mix in boots and misc items as you feel you can afford or need.
EA Ulm is quite a hard nation to do well with desu. You need to know what items are good and when, and you need some finesse in your raiding. Gotta be good at spreading and collapsing your raiding parties to force advantageous fights. You should offer to sell items to other players too, both to make friends and to receive gems, since you forge items so cheap, more gem profit for selling them to others.
>>
>>575303395
EA Ulm armies are going to take casualties from enemies no matter what in late game because you have low magic resistance and are entirely human in what you can field. Your mages are mostly good at buffing and crafting rather than doing damage. The best things you can do are, for example:

>use your magical diversity to break into death magic through a mix of crafting, summoning mound fiends, and empowerment to summon more powerful units
>use your basic recruit anywhere commanders as disposable thugs, equip them with just enough stuff to make them deal damage
>fly some of those thugs into the backline of enemy mages
>raid
>use earth and nature summons where you can to support armies
>try to get big spells that can protect your army from enemy attacks, look at the element your enemy is likely to use and counter that
>give a bunch of your thugs weapons specifically for doing big damage and attack and set them to attack large monsters

EA Ulm can overwhelm your enemies, you just have to compensate for the severe weaknesses. You're conan the barbarian, live like it.

Did the sickle's effect check against MR in the combat log? That would be a test there.

It's one of the only spells you cast on other players through their computer screens, and will be unresisted by that human being pretty much 100% of the time because it's so uncommonly used, and they'll devise their plans with the assumption of a fort being there. Why you would want to make someone think that is a matter of creativity, and most of the time you wouldn't, but it's nice having the option to make a play like that.
>>
>>575360385
Think he would have done better replacing the scutata and bloodstone armor with parrying dagger/swiftness sword and jade armor, his only defense against mashers is, well defense, and the encumbrance hurts him more than they're worth + shield prot is fairly useless against mashers and AP/AN weps.

>conjuration
summon stuff
>alteration
buff stuff
>evocation
blast stuff
>construction
craft stuff. Some nice earth buffs
>enchantment
bit of everything, but mostly about making things go your way, like weather manipulation. All in all a great path. When in doubt, enchantment it out. Also has horde of skeletons, weapons of sharpness, heat from hell, flaming arrows, dispel, mass flight... Lots of good stuff
>thaumaturgy
mostly curses
>blood magic
weird stuff that does its own thing, recommended leave it alone for a while

The best way to get familiar with it is to slim it down how much you tackle at once. Pick a nation you like, check out the spells they can cast natively. Don't bother about the high level spells (research 7+). Most of the really good stuff is at the 6th level of each school, and you want to focus on being able to win your first war before you start worrying about what to do late into the game.

Every path has of everything, but here's a brief overview of the main tools:
>fire
Lots of fire damage
>water
Mostly buffs. Bit weak
>earth
Very powerful all around, but often expensive
>air
Mostly thunderstrikes and storm. Shock resistance is the rarest one. Very hard to get into it without native access, though
>nature
Buffs and cheap high HP summons (aka evocation catchers)
>death
Mostly summons, both mighty and endless skeletons. Cool magic items. Good evocations that cost a gem
>astral
Generally weak, but mages can form communions. Then very strong. Some utility like teleportation
>blood
Mostly offense, some odd utility. But generally an all or nothing: either you go hard blood, or you barely touch it

Additionally, there's remote sitesearching rituals spread out among multiple schools (haruspex, auspex, gnome lore, dark knowledge, voice of apsu...). They find all related sites and you don't have to have a mage walking around so it's faster and safer, but it costs gems.
>>
>>575361215
I hear you however, 20+x gems is so much.
It should be permanent until province is lost for that price at least
>>
>>575354268
>late game
>conquer a province close to opponent's capital or some other weak spot
>plonk that there, plus a dozen elves with magic mirrors
>looks like you just airdropped a fort and teleported a fat army right next to his capital
>enemy must consider whether to advance towards you or stay defensive
>might even consider whether he wants to attack right away or spend a couple turns waiting for more reinforcements before attacking that fat army
>meanwhile you're moving your army elsewhere, but it looks like just two guys thanks to gossamer cloth
The only problem is that it's glamour, which is generally shit enough that no one is really eager to put in the effort to break into it, so you usually only have to even consider the trap if you're dealing with elves. But it's still fun and it can buy you a lot of time
>>
>>575360385
Based Heimdall
>>
>>575362347
Yeah that would maybe be nice. I've only ever seen it used in the lategame when someone has an excess of glamour. DE cuts the base gem cost down to 6, but I'm not sure if I want to live in a world where it's an easily cast spell and you can just fill up all your provinces with fake forts, provided you have a bunch of G4s.

there is a misconception about magic. everyone yaps that wizards carry the game. they do. but not until they get into higher level tech. don't expect casters do do anything game changing until way later
>>
>>575377601
Generally true, but mages also make your troops much stronger even with early game buffs.
Body Ethereal can win first wars for example at alt 3. Luck or barkskin too but a bit less.
There;s also some early game evos and battle summons which are relatively quite powerful early, like mind burn or summon imps.
Also though, it depends
>>
>>575378410
Or imps that good?
>>
>>575371008
They had many bodyguards, but in my defence, theres a lot of flyers with invis so.. kinda makes sense to wanna keep my mages safe. Not that it was totally waterproof plan. But yea it seems like there’s no strict casting. Because of that. Gay.
>>
>>575386836
Yeah
They can fly most importantly so they can fuck up scripts
>>
>>575386836
Its also that you can interweave reinvigoration with summon imps to throw out a metric shit-ton of them even with B1s. Individually they suck, but 30 jumping on you every round makes a difference. If you have thugs/SCs that can wade through the imps then they become fantastic due to their high attack density causing harassment.
>>
>>575403336
Neat I'll try it out
Does blood lust work
>>
>>575355439
Basically just play the game more or watch playthroughs on YouTube. Most important IMO is to get into the habit of macro-strategic thinking and interrogating your game state regularly, asking yourself questions like how do I improve my position and making projections on the consequences of your decisions. Magic starts to make more sense when you're not operating on the level of making the research numbers go up and instead it's just one piece of a larger strategic context. Obviously you need to know the system though to know your options.
>>
>>575407131
Yeah bloodlust is sweet on them, but you do have a problem of timing, especially when the imps have relatively short lifespans. Unfortunately any imps summoned after casting won't get the +4 str, and as the ai likes casting imps + reinvigoration it can be either difficult or impossible to ensure 100% bloodlust coverage.

Based on the mage, path and research you can also end your imp spam by jumping in a sabbath with some of the imp casters, or start by making a sabbath so that you don't need to interleave reinvigoration between imp castings. Really depends on how much you need the early flying disruption and whether you want to maximize the size of individual summoning pulses, cost efficiency, or net output.

The final benefit to summon imps is they add to your existing hp on the field, which can give you more time before you rout. All temporary battle summons work this way, and its one of their stronger traits.

I don't remember making this post, but I must have
>>
>>575422745
I think on the whole sloops is much better than vanilla ai and spells, but some of the SCBM fixes are problematic in and of themselves. An example is curse of stones which went to 1E from 3E. This is one of the strongest early game spells, defines certain matchups, and is nearly always correct to cast if you are able to before antimagic is in the field; that's at the 3E cost. At 1E that means any E1 can boost into it, which is absolutely insane, plus its now cheap enough that the decision to cast is mostly independent from gem attrition concerns.

SCBM has always had the issue of trying to balance the game around a more average skill level, where the usage of many tools can be quite independent from the actual efficacy. Another great example is adding recuperation to bronze colossus or other certain strong SC pretenders but not adding any significant tools to handle them besides adjusting the ai casting weight for shatter. And no, the new A1 AP weapons might help vs prot thugs or SCs but not against these innate casting pretenders, as any thugs will just get blown away via fists of iron or hand of death. In my current Phlegra game I took a BC in vanilla just to see what I could do with it if I was aggressive to the point of recklessness, and if I wasn't fighting Ulm with E2s everywhere it would have been nearly impossible to kill. At least after recalling it twice it has lost 2 paths and has afflictions ...

>Phaeacia attacked Agartha in the restroom
Whether intention or sheer retardation, I'm getting the feeling this concept might simply be too complicated. A basic grand arena but pretenders only might be a lot easier to handle.
Fortunately Phaeacia was repealed and Agartha made it to the arena.

EA Arco's bronze colossus sent MA's Arco's bronze colossus straight to hell. Then Agartha's risen oracle too.

There's only one battle left: Asura, champion of the pit, gets a chance to face the champion of the arena for the final victory!

>>575467986
Completely agreed, that was pretty anticlimatic.
The whole game was a huge mess, but well, it was an interesting experiment. I'm not very convinced, though. Too many moving parts. "Conquer the central province" is about as complex as it can go before shit gets out of control, I think.

Still, thanks to everyone for participating, and remember to join the Grand Arena MA Edition, starting this weekend! Featuring better organization, gemgen stuff, extra gems, and amphibian nations but otherwise the same game, just MA

Pretty much everyone has archers, and in the odd case you don't, they're an extremely common indie troop.
>air shield bless
They aren't that buffed if they're wasting points in an air shield
>they can buff air shield
Now that's a bigger problem.
However, air shield only lets you ignore 80% of projectiles. Meaning you simply have to bring 4 times as many cheapo indie archers to effectively negate it, and then you also get to kill a mage too and still suffer about 0 attrition.

>>
>>575487459
Ma Mictlan in b? Above nations like jotun, Agartha, Shinu. Thats fucking insane. Worst land nation in the age by a mile
>>
>>575487960
Ma Rlyeh is the best all round water nation in the age, as long as there is 2 water nations in the game. Ys only fucks hard with a solo water experience.
I'd rate Atlantis and Pelagia above at least a couple of land nations too. If you dumped all the water nations in D i'd get it because their strength is more circumstantial than land nations at least, but you had to be salty about Ys and break the NAP
>>
>>575487459
Absolute mug
>>
>>575488890
I like playing Ys is all so I think they're strong
>>
>>575488890
Heck, I took Atlantis because crun thinks its a sleeper scales nation, I've never played a fishbitch before, and it doesn't directly counter R'Lyeh while having multiple options for the UW knifefight. Of course I take a build focused on that fight, and we end up spawning in separate lakes. The nation seems decent, and has solid coastal sacred mage recruitment to push past the early game.
>>
>>575487459
>Nazca S tiered
>>
>>575386836
>Or imps that good?

They can fly most importantly so they can fuck up scripts. I will re-iterate this, because imps can and will fly and attack even before your troops set to immediately fly and attack the rear at the start of the battle. THey can utterly disrupt enemy formations, mess up intricate plans, and even invite all of their "Fire closest" archers to shoot Just Right Next to that mage battery that some imp flew next to. An excellent disruptive option and it comes into play very early for Blood users, very potent in its place.

Yeah, and they either share their secrets or keep them to themselves so if you just walk into the game then you will run into every little trap and trick that the more experienced ones around you know until you become like them, tricking and trapping your neighbors when you see an opening and hoarding hard won and obscure knowledge.
>>
>>575490360
Ma Atlantis was being held back by not being able to recruit reef warriors in coastal forts.
It was finally fixed but they haven't caught onto the meta yet.
But for real I think they are decent. Kings of the Deep are super fun mages. Just yeah here have a water 5 mage, or a sick fucking acid caster. Also imo they are the best looking Atlatnis. The orange coral breastplates are sex
>>
>>575492742
Not true, I'm no wizard still have a couple years to go
>>
>>575499543
The funny thing is that complete rookies to the game can do quite well given some general guidance about the way the game works and the naction that they want to play. You can get so far into your advanced metas that you end up getting completely destroyed by a nooblet neighbor stumbling and bumbling their way into devastating you

Or even worse, someone turtles to lvl 7-8 tech and an early doomstack (I think doomstack creation is one of the easier things to become competent in) then kills me after I've been stuck in chain wars.

Well its been fun guys, but I've decided to go ai in all my games here. I simply can't deal with 24 hr timers when I spend 2-3 hrs at a minimum on my turns, especially playing as Phlegra; hell I just spend 90 mins setting up a fight with Ulm and was still only about halfway scripted.

I'm not even sure what's going on in the duel arena anymore, but I think we can call that one a day. Needs much tighter control, or much simpler rules, I think.

Tomorrow I am off to the Danube for the annual summer school of science, Sci-fi and sports. The games shall get a big extension until we can set up the internet or I get a decent signal. This is not the same as me going to the mountains to lift stuff, we will return to a vaguely normal turn schedule soon. Most likely getting banished but I'll try, the only real way to get through would be to misdirect the casting AI or distract it with a juicier target (which can't be done in 1v1s). I mean I'm confident in my ability to return from the pit, but we'd just keep the merry go round going forever.

I'll move onto the arena this turn.
>>

Even with the fastcast crown I don't think you can outcast an innate spellcaster since they just reduce everything to 100% cast time, but I suppose you could roll a 50/50 with another innate.

I feel a bit bad since I ended up taking so much off chainstalers, but what can you do? At least my victory over the Wood Elves felt a bit earned, even if they did go AI after the murdering winter suckerpunch despite having a bunch of golems and dragons and cool shit left over.
I still don't know why Nurgle disappeared, he was absolutely in a winning position.
