Go fuck a cactus edition

>What the heck is this
/indie/ is the general for all indie games, such as Age of Decadence, A Hat in Time, Axiom Verge, Baba Is You, Battle Brothers, Battlerite, Card City Nights 2, Cave Story, CrossCode, Cultist Simulator, Darkwood, DashBored, Dead Cells, The Desolate Hope, Disco Elysium, Environmental Station Alpha, FTL, Guacamelee!, Hollow Knight, Knytt, LISA, Lobotomy Corp, Machinarium, Middens, Monolith, Monster Train, Noita, OFF, OneShot, Rimworld, Rain World, Slap City, Slay the Spire, Starsector, Subnautica, Sunless Skies, Tooth and Tail, Underrail, VA-11 HALL-A, Yume Nikki, etc., as well as other games that just don't fit in any other general such as Atelier, Pillars of Eternity, Rayman, and Valkyria Chronicles. /jrpg/ is welcome. Idle games are cool too.

Mobile or consoles, Flash or Unity, freeware or early access. This place is a home for the indie game community and indie and obscure games that don't have a home. So be free to talk and share all your hidden gems, forgotten games and starving devs here.

>Can I talk about games that already have a general?
We mostly discuss games that are not popular enough for their own threads, however, all indie games are allowed. So talk about them if you want, but don't overdo it since you already have other generals for that.

Someone explain Icarus to me. It's free weekend, I walked around for a little while, got asshurt because I couldn't figure out how to cook things or make charcoal and left. I'm TRYING to choose a recipe you ass, when I click nothing happens.

It just felt like Ark but with a shitty, hard to read font. What's the appeal? Not bait, I'm trying to psyche myself up to give it another try.
>>
>>575357978
Blood West. I enjoyed the hell out of it but it's pretty unrelentingly brutal and failures can snowball quickly if you're impatient. The roguelike mode is even more willing to have an enemy introduce itself by taking off 2/3rds of your HP and half the items designed to protect you from death don't actually work. That being said, if you can tolerate the frustrations and you want to skulk around a dense map headshotting morons and looting their corpses it's magnificent.

>Someone explain Icarus to me.
There are 3 modes:
>Operations
Reguelite original game mode, in which you are dropped with whatever metaprogression items and skills you have, and do operations that consist o multistep missions to earn meta progression currency.
>Open World
Persistent world, in which you can do all the Operations. Including earning and using metaprogression stuff. The most popular one by far.
>Outposts
Pre-Open World mode, in which you have a persistent small map in which buildfag and earn some low tier metaprogression resource.

>I walked around for a little while, got asshurt because I couldn't figure out how to cook things
>or make charcoal
Recipes are made automagically in some crafting stations like campfires, as long as they have the fuel type items in their fuel slot, and their raw resource in their inventory.
In campfires for example. You need to put flammable fuel in the bottom fuel slot, and meat in the top inventory row. It will automatically cook food, and place it there, and will place it there the charcoal of the burned flammable stuff you used as fuel.
>I'm TRYING to choose a recipe you ass, when I click nothing happens.
It can only be used in certain stations like the workbench, textile bench and so on.
Stuff like the oxidizer, composter and oxite extractor, need to do different things.
For the example, for the oxite extractor(which I recommend rushing when you get the research points. You need to put sulphur in its fuel slot, oxite ore in its middle slots, and either an oxygen bladder or an oxygen tank on its top slots, and wait a bit for them to fill. Some stations like this one, can be used without opening up the GUI, just clicking on the relevant parts of the crafting station.

And why do I need air when there's a bunch of animals running around?

>>575367083
>I mean what's the appeal vs other games in the genre?
It has a more fun game loop that most of the other slop. More innovative setting and it started as a roguelite openworld survival craft that drifted and featurecreeped into standard openworld survival craft.
>And why do I need air when there's a bunch of animals running around?
Toxic atmosphere for non-genetically modified humans, and a waaay lower oxygen level in atmosphere for non-adapted creatures.
>>
>>575367654
Yes.
You need to use the Dough skill "Flour" to inflict flour, which then lets your Mold skills inflict yeast.
Then if you hit them with some kind of fire skill they will be become bread, which fucks their shit up.

I did it. I finished Hell Clock on new game++.

This game has a problem with hp sponges. Even min-maxing a lot, max lvl relics, all but 1 constellation points, trading defense for offense, stacking multiple attack multipliers of different kinds, the last few floors enemies were unkillable and I had to run past them to cheese it. Regular enemies are much bigger hp walls than the act boss, its some clown shit. And this is on the "regular" mode, I can't imagine how it is on veteran.

Game is addicting tho.

Watch a video, the parts are affordable.
It's often straightforward to replace an analogue. Use lots of flux and clean up neatly and it should be good. There's plenty of anecdotal evidence of others doing it online too. Just be sure to take care of the part identity numbers if any.

Why didn't you goons tell me about Mio? Pretty cool so far.
>>
>>575380129
Mostly because although it's very pretty it's got major problems. The platforming gauntlets are more precise than can be executed consistently, compounded by the fact the distribution of healing points is absolute ass and costs resources unless you keep a charm equipped all the time. Also there's invisible cutscene flags throughout the map that eat away at your max HP permanently, which you could call a design choice except their placement makes some of them skippable so you feel punished every time. I am also personally over the 'robots sad about humanity being dead' theme after the eighth time.

I managed to get past where I was "stuck." So far I like it for the most part. Controls took a bit of getting used to because I'm having to break the muscle memory I developed playing Nine Sols. Lately I have just been burning through Metroidvanias, my favorite being Lost Crown. Also playing Animal Well but got annoyed at a part where you get chased by a ghost dog. I will go back and finish it soon. Any good Metroid style recommendations? Feel like I've already played the ones that usually get mentioned (Silksong is too tough for me).

Give it a shot. It's quite good, and I found it very challenging but mostly fair. My biggest issue is that on the last act there's so much shit going on, and on top of that there's a lot of visual clutter so it get's very hard to see what's going on and you can easily get chunked from some shit you couldn't even see in the mountain of fodder swarming you on top of the elites.

All three current characters also have very distinct playstyles. You have your vanilla knight for the more balanced approach, but then there also Brienne who's a super mobile fighter with low hp but high-dodge and block allowing for some very aggressive play. And lastly there's the big guy who has very good reach and is all about zoning due to having shit dodge and block, but does crazy aoe and stagger.
>>
>>575449573
For pure Metroid you're looking at slim pickings. Zexion is the best one, Axiom Verge 1 is fine. From there it's a handful of 5/10 niche titles that all make fairly crippling mistakes like adding on a Hollow Knight charm system, an XP/level system, or other fundamental misunderstandings of what makes Metroid feel like Metroid.
>>
>>575463084
As luck would have it I somehow already have Zexion and Axiom Verge in my library already, I'll get to them soon. I don't mind added systems, but the two you mentioned seem like they are definitely closer to the Metroid style than the Castlevania style. I'm embarrassed to say that I've never finished Super Metroid, so I probably should do that eventually too. So far the only Metroids I've completed are Fusion, Zero Mission, and Prime 1.
>>
>>575464223
The good news is that those three and SM are what I'd consider the foundational Metroid experience. Prime 2 is solid, 3 sucks, from what I hear 4 sucks worse. Dread is fine but overly focused on one-way corridors and/or story flags that change the map, and also the map design is atrocious. Personally SM only clicked for me after playing the rando a few times, and now I absolutely love the game. Genuinely an all-time masterclass but fuck me does the spin jump take getting used to.

I tried Prime 4 and couldn't stand the constant harping from the guy over the radio. I finished the first level, saw the open world desert portion, and called it a day. As for Super Metroid, I think it was a case of me never owning it back in the day. Money was tight for us growing up and so I had a handful of games on the Super Nintendo I'd just play over and over - A Link to the Past, Mario RPG, Doom (lol), and a Godzilla style monster fighting game I can't remember the name of. I knew basically nothing about Metroid until years later when they had the Prime demo on display at Best Buy. That's one of the very few times a game truly "blew me away."

Btw head's up for anybody who's been reading along, but the game's currently 75% off for the next week and change, and according to the developers in a news post they're going to raise the base price of the game after this with the 2.0 rework update that's coming out soon. I just finished Disco Elysium for the first time and it was incredible. However I'm wondering how to approach a second run and if it even is worth it.
Because for my first run, I first tried using one of the predefined characters, the logical one I think, and after 5 minutes, I backed up and re-started the game with my own built character, and I tried to play as closely as "I think" I act myself and what "I think" I would have done and said, which ended up being a great experience.
Now I wonder whether to do a second run with a Harry with very different characteristics, I am planning on focusing on Volition and Half Light and mostly the other Physique and Motorics skills, but it feels like I would not be playing as myself but more like as other person and thus... roleplaying, I guess. Which now sounds like a realization of sorts.

I know lots of people love roleplaying games because they like to play roles, but I always play rpgs as... myself.
And I know it is a little dumb to even be asking about "how" a game should be played.
Damn I don't even know what my question is.
>>
>>575503826
Hell yeah, congrats anon, glad you liked it. I wouldn't say the game was live changing for me, but holy shit it might have come close.
>However I'm wondering how to approach a second run and if it even is worth it.
I've finished my second run of the game earlier this year and will probably finish my third soon, it is worth it, but it helped letting some time pass between runs. I think I've played it for the first time around Winter 2024. A lot of the magic is gone, but it's still a great game and there's tons of cool stuff to find, even if you're thorough there are still a few quest and dialogue branches you'll probably miss if you just play once. And there are a few nice tidbits to notice once you already know the rest of the story.
I did the same as you in the first run, leaning a bit into Harry's crazy but also picking a lot of the options based on what I would say, especially for the political and moral decision stuff.
But playing a character, as you said, even felt kinda liberating honestly, because I could just start saying insane shit (especially regarding politics) that I don't agree with but that still lead to interesting stories.

The one thing I still haven't dared playing yet is a racist and a druggie/alcoholic run, mainly because I just can't stand the thought of disappointing Kim. I have no clue how they managed to write a character this good, man.

>I wouldn't say the game was live changing for me, but holy shit it might have come close.
Yeah same, I have to admit I didn't fully understood everything. But the writing was amazing. It has been a long time since a game made me reflect so much, and laugh so much!

Still lots of the politics stuff went mostly over my head. I barely understand some basic ideas of communism and I found it hilarious that the game categorized me as a fascist.
>>575504720
>The one thing I still haven't dared playing yet is a racist and a druggie/alcoholic run, mainly because I just can't stand the thought of disappointing Kim.
Yeah very valid. But that's exactly how my first play went. I didn't understood the drinking mechanic but I did drink and smoked at least once, and again, the game said I was a fascist, which was funny. I found it funny how the game was "laughing" at me. Although I wouldn't even say that I'm a "fascist", since I'm more like a catholic so I found the whole "ok let's use the word traditional instead" fucking hilarious.
I was worried that Kim would be dissapointed but I still unlocked the "Kim REALLY trusts you" check and recruited him in the end.
So that was good.

Sonic adventure 1 is one of the best video game ever made. And it was a complete accident. There is no way sonic team knew they were making something good or else they would have stopped themselves, looked at their product and slightly sabotaged it in order to not feel the pressure of making a good game. The only flaws of this game are literally having to redo a few bosses which takes less than 10 minutes total and a few minor glitches. Yes, I like knuckles stages, they're my favorite in fact. Yes I like tails' levels despite how easy they are because tails is fun to play. Yes, I like Ami, Big and Gamma's stages. They offer unique gameplay completely different from the rest of the game and the only flaw in Big's stages is that the gameplay is not explained properly. I don't hate mission mode in DX tho some missions are just bad and took me hours to complete, most were fun. Yes, I like the Chao garden. I like it more than in 2. The original chao garden on the dreamcast had the best and most clear stat system and I wish it had been kept for the modern version in addition to the black market and grading system instead of having animals reduce a stat and increase another with a leveling system but moderns have the infinite animal glitch so it's fine and even then you still had blue animals which give +everything in all versions (I did like the mythical and ghost animals added in SA2 tho), the only black mark is the fact flying is basically useless in SA1's chao races. And no, I don't mind having to play sky chase several times to both get the emblem and do tails and sonic's stories.

Sorry, I had to get it out of my chest.

I actually liked the modern day segments of Assassin's Creed, even the puzzles (when they weren't bugging out). It just really lost steam after 3, and absolutely cratered after 4 and Rogue. I wish they'd made it better and actually worth engaging with instead of making it shittier and shittier in response to people saying it was getting shittier and shittier. But Ubisoft has been fundamentally incapable of improving since...Far Cry 3?
>>
>>575540641
I pretty much dropped assassin's creed in the middle of 3 but I remember the irl segment being cool for the most part. When it wasn't dumb cliffhangers that is. The games were incredibly bad at resolving them and they felt forced.

>>
>>575541341
There's actually a almost-semi-decent modern segment towards the end of 3. It's pretty much just a combat gauntlet, but the combat in 3 was fun anyway and they give you a glock with a bottomless mag.
Unfortunately since Syndicate they've switched from cliffhangers to aimless faffing about. Basically just a cutscene to remind you that the modern day exists, and a walkable menu to read lore dumps everyone including the devs stopped caring about 5 games ago.
>>
>>575543780

honestly that's not even the problem, I've fried my brain to the point where being able to sit down and play a game for 1-2h feels great, when the alternative is zapping through YouTube videos and shit.
I'm home from my part-time job around 15:00-16:00 and then basically just sit in front of the PC until I go to sleep anywhere between 22:00 and 01:00 lately most of that has been mindless scrolling though. Minus an hour or two for chores, food etc. Sometimes I have longer chores and semi regularly I manage to break out of the loop to go for a walk or do some other hobby. Been getting more into books lately. Started reading House of Leaves, it's a great time, I recommend it.

When I was younger I would immerse myself in a book for days without worry in the world. Then I would focus on a single game until beating it. I had poor hardware, couldn't play new games and replayed the same old games multiple times (like pokemon) enjoying it fully.

Now I always have multiple games installed, always have a urge to try new things, I have multiple stuff to watch too, and much less time. I can mostly play on weekends. I sometimes I feel like I am always under some brain fog. Could be burnout for work and adult stuff, but its probably shitposting on 4chan and games too. I know its not the healthiest way of life, but its so much fun!

Recently I watched a movie that reminded of a book I read decades ago and had mostly forgotten, I downloaded the ebook, got all excited to reread it, but then everyday after work I just end on 4chan again, arguing with retards and bots. Anyway, thanks for reading my blog.

I make an active effort to experience at least some boredom every now and then, even if it's just by not pulling out my phone while waiting in line or at a street light.

Coming back to the game was a pain in the ass but it ended up being quite enjoyable

Oh, I meant in the Bible. I know eating the forbidden fruit was Eve's sin (and was used by the church to bully women).

I'm curious for games that use the model of table boards that characters walk through with dice (maybe), like Mario Party. The tabletop tag just lumps everything that could in theory be played on an irl tabletop together.
Picrel is 100% Orange Juice
There's also Culdcept (not indie but the old game got ported and there's a new one coming out)
>>
>>575629316
Steamworks is already cancerous API but workshop is even more cancerous as it is a increasingly becoming a pathetic attempt at enforcing a monopoly.

I have 100% Orange Juice on my library but never tried it.

Playing Fran Bow. Been in her room for nearly two hours. Feel like I've tried everything. Right now I have a water balloon that I assume I need to fill with water somehow to kill the shadow outside the window, but I have no water. Anyone got a very, very, very small hint?

Tried Sniper Elite, the last one.
It's not fun.
>Häns Grüber: doesn't really care for the army or Hitler, really wishes he was working at his parents' inn
>Marküs Krüber: misses his jazz band, doesn't really want to be here
>Rüdölf von Dräkenhöff: force to sell out his Jewish childhood friend to get ration vouchers, still feel bad about it
>Günther Herrmann: plans to marry his child crush, Anna Nävärre, once the war ends.
>Öttö von Bülök: tried to warn everyone that Hitler was mad, got mocked on Reich-chan and mocked by being called "moustache man bad"
>B.J. Bläzcövicz: evil clone to the real one, is just a conscript because he made a list of all the evil officers he planned to punch, and it turned out the list contained 99% of the Waffen S.S. personnel
>Ich, Pänzerknäcker: wishes he was a real man, every night he wishes for it with all his strength, but he remains a panzerknacker
