I have to get some chores done but I've beaten levels 1-7 on Heroic (I'm actually about half way through TB)The first half of the game is... ok.The weapon balancing is better than I expected. The Pistol and AR both feel good. Sprint absolutely breaks the experience and I encourage you to not use it at all. Likewise, you should turn off waypoints. The busted enemy melee reach is abysmal. For Hunters, Elites, and Pures, it's pretty bullshit. It's probably the worst thing about the game.Ironically, once the flood show up I think the game really improves quite a bit. The Library in particular got a much needed facelift and the shotgun is much more satisfying to use than I had been led to believe. I like how you can't just ignore infection forms anymore just because you have full shields. Carriers also got a bit of a defense buff which adds to their threat level if they get close. The multi-faction fighting on Two Betrayals so far is also pretty great. Also the flood biomass buildup is probably the best it has ever been. Lorefags can suck my dick about how it shouldn't be there, it's cool.The weirdest thing about the game is how much of a mishmash of old and new it is. A ton of audio is ripped straight from the original game, but then it's interspliced with new audio at the same time. Like, most of the music seems to be from the OG game, but there are also a few new tracks. Dialogue is the most jarring though because while Chief, Cortana, Johnson, and Guilty Spark (he's a standout imo, guy is doing a great job like he never left) almost everyone else is using original audio lines. I'll have to go back and watch it again but I swear during the Flood intro cutscene, it switches between new Keyes' voice, then goes back to old Keyes, then new Keyes again. There are also a few leftover audio lines from Reach, mostly from Covenant like Jackals.tl;dr it's kind of like a fever dream, but I am having fun, though it helps that I spent no money on it.

Playing on Heroic and just finished up Silent Cartographer. I'm noticing the AR is overpowered. It doesn't kill as quickly as the magnum but it has 3 big things going for it: 1. A lot more ammo around for it 2. ADS plus tighter spread makes it a really good all around gun while being more forgiving than the magnum3. Tap fire is way too accurate, even if I couldn't ADS I wouldn't have much difficulty plinking enemies from mid range It feels nice to use but unfortunately this makes it so that I have little incentive to actually pick up other weapons. Only on Silent did I run out of ammo for it. I think its also an issue with Heroic as a setting. If the enemies were more aggressive I'd probably run out faster because I couldn't always tap fire. The ammo count nerf shows that they knew at least some of this, but they really did not go far enough to balance it.

...But as far as a single-player experience, Halo 3 is a colossal disappointment, largely for how little it's advanced since the series began. The big hook for Halo 1 was that it proved that console shooters could hold their own against PC shooters. Or "re-proved", considering Perfect Dark had already demonstrated this, but only for the subset of gamers who had an N64, which is not the subset of gamers who was playing shooters on the PC. Halo laid the ground work for the the genre to thrive on console systems, at the other end of gamepads, on big screens television and home theater audio systems. Bungie showed everyone how it could be done: solid graphics and sound, liberal use of autoaim, carefully laid out battles that didn't involve too much 180 degree turning, not too many weapon choices, and enough personality to give it some kick.But like id with their engines, Bungie struggles with the creative part of the equation. Nowhere is this more evident than in Halo 3. Six years later, it's still repeating the formula established in Halo 1. Virtually every single moment and location is recycled from the first two games (the "new" area was done just as well in at least two other games). The engine doesn't even look much better and, frankly, the gunplay is so very 2001. This is the same Halo you knew and loved, or didn't love, as the case may be. I'm sure it'll be a wonderful multiplayer game, mostly because millions will play it. But as a single player game, it's a classic case of the arrested development that makes our hobby the domain of teenage boys, grown up and otherwise.

It's not the worst thing ever, I think the hate is overblown, but it's nothing to really be written about as amazing either. Doesn't help that the difficulty spike between Normal and Heroic is the width of the Grand Canyon.
