Further work on the astral plane / limbo / deadplane (name WIP). Got a few more of the towers modeled and placed, remodeled a few to be less ostentatious and match the vibe a bit better. Cleaned up the lighting and removed the giant purple thingy. Two more towers to model, then add a few moving platforms, and level set.

After being absent for over two months due to several life emergencies that all hit at once, I finally had a chance to work on my game again. Still working on one of the background images for the town section/visual novel part of the game. All of this is geometry since It is not being placed in the engine; its for a static rendered image.

I disagree. The fun part in a 4X is in the beginning while exploration is still relevant. For both tactics and 4X, late game always becomes a slog from having to control too many units at once. JRPGs are usually fairly flat throughout.
>>
>>576892517
4X feels like a cursed genre in that sense. The longer you go the less fun it gets due to more micromanagment, each turn gets slower and slower to calculate, and you usually already have a pretty good idea if you won or not.

For the record I still think there is a chance Biteme's desktop idler multiplayer stardew clone could be a huge success. It just caused some very understandable groans from the audience on this initial reveal, but never forget that Stardew Valley looked "bad" and got plenty of criticism in it's initial development. Eric had to overhaul the art and other things a number of times.

Multiplayer enabled farming games are a powerful thing. It sparked an entire genre during the Facebook Farm days (or whatever that game was called), when the multiplayer element really only amounted to people loading your Farm and being able to interact with it. And they were willing to do this because they could access it as easily as clicking the link in their browser.
>>
>>576892990
>The longer you go the less fun it gets due to more micromanagment
This is a UI/automation problem, and is solvable.
>each turn gets slower and slower to calculate
This is also solvable but most devs for whatever reason don't set up a "stress test" scenario to optimize against so they just test the early to mid game and say good enough.
>you usually already have a pretty good idea if you won or not.
This is the hard part.
>>
>>576895386
It's fine as a game idea, but I don't trust them to not fuck up and half ass the implementation.

Anon that's what games are. We sit down and invest ourself into imagined situations with rules to overcome in order to "win" and get dopamine because we need a break from the hunting and gathering hustle, which has much higher stakes (namely survival) and although offering dopamine for completion is much less fun.

These things should be "worthless" so we can immediately step away from it and man the walls when our castle is under siege.

Make it a mobile phone idler and you got yourself a hit.
>>
>>576897352
It's niche. The genre grows more popular each nextfest. But multiplayer farm games have mass appeal, so combining the two makes sense. For many it will be the first desktop game they have played.

>>576897478
PC is better as you can have it on the bottom of your screen while working and multi-tab browsing and people leave their computers on all day. A phone can't offer that kind of audience.

Idlers have made a combined total of $120m on Steam, not including any MTX. The most well-known game that is similar to theirs is Rusty's Retirement, which has made $3.4m gross. Two of the top 10 games with the most players right this moment on Steam are desktop companions (Bongo Cat and DESU).

If you're already tired of hearing about incrementals buckle your seatbelt because these kind of trends don't come along every year. Perhaps. Idlers are quite fun. The ones that have been popular recently are basically 3-5hr long puzzle games for around $5 that you can finish in one sitting with enough jingling keys on screen to keep your attention at all times.

I'm gonna be honest the nine out of ten games I see here or made by game dev youtubers are kind of shit. I would never consider to buy or even play it for free. Also, 90% of indie games I see is just people trying to copy previous big game "but with a twist" and the twist is not making it better than original, it's just some random bullshit. "Oh, it's an incremental roguelike deck builder, but with silly cats!". Indie game dev reminds me a lot of crypto community. Just a bunch of retards gambling on a new shitcoin, then once one shitcoin makes for the next year everyone just gonna copy it as if the success wasn't a result of random luck, but because their logo was a certain color or something. Except it works. People are doing well mimicking other games in hot genres and stuff, even if they get some of it "wrong". They might not make a fortune, but they make something. Actual cargo cults don't achieve anything through their actions, but saying that devs are just making games you don't like and therefore are cargo cult retards is a bit much.

the main problem of modern games is that they completely lack conflict between good and evil. if you just run around to kill creatures to get their loot and xp, you are actually the evil one. or if "it's complicated", then you also get nobody to care. guess why john wick worked so well. killing only makes you feel good, if it's justified. everything now is completely void of any conflict between good and evil.

In the incrememental game "Garden Galaxy" the dev just hands assets to the player piece by piece and that is the game. And it works great and is fully captivating because our brain just wants to grab things and find a place for them, and once you do that there is another coin coming for another piece. The treadmill is insanely effective.

What irritated me the most about Animal Well is the fact that the dev is charging $25 for a short pixel platformer.
This is the only review I could find that talked about the price.

Don't get me wrong, I am not saying that this is bad on its own.
I think indie developers are almost always undercharging themselves to compensate for low visibility.

My problem is moreso the hypocrisy of gamers not minding a premium price tag so long as an eceleb endorsed it.

everytime i see minecraft i get angry at how repulsive it looks and how they frame their laziness as sovl.
that game should have so much content, so much good art direction, a good character creation screen etc. etc.
yet all it does it gaslighting you into "this is good trust me, we don't have to put in work to make it better, cause its so perfect".

Useless blog post, filter "days left" and never see this again.
I relapsed on sweets last night when I went on a date and had pancakes. They were good, but the date was a complete waste of time and it wasn't even fun. And even if I'd stayed home I'd have still wasted time too. It got me thinking how I've been pretty careful with money recently but I've been spending time like I was getting it in monthly payments from Steam. I should be spending my time the way I'm spending my money, think about how best to use every minute and be very conscious of it slipping away. In fact I should be much more careful with my time than with my money because time can't be earned back.
82 days left. I owe 2200 minutes of work because I didn't do my full 5 hours yesterday. Today I'll be finishing the work on 3D models that needed fixing and hopefully move on to something else like the economy or something.

This guy is smoking crack. Zukowski says to make small games. And that there is no such thing as "chasing trends", there is such a thing as making games people want which might often be part of a popular trend.

Aarimous comment section is wild. There's a guy in this

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-JsFaJhs88

vid comments who drunkenly reprimands Aarimous for talking about his game too much after it succeeded, and then he apologizes and says he's drunk but going to leave the rambling up there.

>Again, wishing you the best.. but.. I have no reason to finish this video.. and if this is the continuing trend of content.. I have no reason to spend time here.. which is depressing.. because honest, "this is my life" indie devs is rare.. and Aarimous used to be that.. but now? Aarimous is just.. "Yo, I MADE THIS GAME THAT MADE MONEY (oh, Thornity<sp> helped) SO WATCH MY VIDEO AND LISTEN TO ME TALK ABOUT INDIE DEV.." And that?
>That's not Aarimous.. that's asshat content.. And I can get that on any search I make.. GG and GL

So if you make a game and make 20 videos of it during development, you're only allowed to mention it once after it succeeds.

The jealousy is real.

The best thing about sloppers is they have no comprehension of what progress is. That's why we have never seen a slopper make a game here, they would have to be able to show or talk about something besides sending their chatbot to fetch for them. And to them, that is the progress. That's all they do. Tinkermaxxing.

That's perfect though, that's real life and makes observing Aarimous a little more kino. Success changes people. And one thing that is also true is that people who are uncomfortable with others changing or succeeding want them to stay in a permanent state of only just getting ready for life or getting ready to launch their game or getting ready to do things. When someone actually moves forward they can't accept the reality of it. Classic crabs in a bucket.

He's giving info that only devs care about like sharing his stats and stuff. People who only want to play games just see it as bragging and don't see the value in listening to him talk about how many wishlists translated to sales, how the game is performing after a year, how many wishlists he earned from nextfest, etc.

I wonder how impactful his youtube channel actually was, considering that he's averaging under 10k views per video and then got over 10k wishlists in his first week. I suppose it probably helped him gain the initial traction required to blow up.

>>
The thing that makes people uncomfortable about incrementals is that it's naked gameplay. It's an extremely arcade type slot machine style of game, it's like pinball. The noises and the points and number go up is the backbone, instead of story or insane graphics usually. It's gratuitous. It's a vulgar use of data and poking at the human brain.
>>
I can imagine playing these incremental games on your phone while you're taking a shit, but I can't imagine anyone launching them on PC and just like playing this shit for a few hours after work for example. If you actually do that you are literal insect goyim

Okay I figured out the font. It needed a font asset that was different from the TMP font asset I used previously.

Then I discovered UI toolkit doesn't have any sort of image fill types like the old system has. Sure it's easier to set up the overall layout but all these missing bits are making the workload add up quick.

Any Animal Crossing clone with a similar artstyle would simultaneously make you a shitload of money and also possible make you the target of Nintendo's wrath.

Nintendo has a LOT of IPs with starving audiences that are extremely scarce and difficult for a solo person to clone, but if you manage to do it, you'll get rich. See Stardew Valley, Palworld, etc.
If someone made a Pikmin or Animal Crossing or Splatoon clone they'd make big bucks. You don't even have to change much, JUST having it be on PC instead of a nintendo console would be enough.
