I posted a few days ago asking about how to get started, saying I know programming in general but have zero formal training. Someone linked to https://rogueliketutorials.com and instructive as it might be, isn't getting started on a Python script kind of, well, a non-starter? You can't build on it much, can you? Not something you might want to release, I mean.

>>576662697it just said this, I translated it back to english with AI for our viewers at homeYo! To all you hyped-up bros looking to strike it rich with indie games and make it big—listen up and clean out your damn ears! That rosy rumor that 'if you just put out five games, half of them will be massive hits' is a total illusion born from looking only at the winners. Do NOT buy into that crap for a second! In reality, blindly churning out games won't get you anywhere. The only real path to success is climbing the ladder step-by-step, building up your track record and gaining the ultimate allies—your fans—even if you start small. If your game bombs spectacularly, don't let your stubborn pride drag you into making a sequel. Pivot quickly and take on a whole new genre! Even if you take a break for years, your true fans will wait for you. So don't rush to pump things out. Just finish your first game, small but solid, and learn how to survive this brutal industry with grit and brains. Let's take the crown together. Peace out!"

How far into development should a game be to start talking about it on social media? I'm talking normie social media, nothing exclusively dev facing like aggy. I want to drum up hype for it or at least put it on peoples' radar as early as possible but I want the first impression to be good. It just talks to a server where the AI runs to give you your result instead. What "tool" uses does AI actually have?To be fair I don't have much experience using it. But from what I hear the goal of AI is to actually be a "make game button" because it has diminishing returns over long periods of doing its work. So it needs to do it in as little prompts as possible. All of this is not mentioning that AI is not even similar in the usage process to a "tool" in the traditional sense. It's more like directing a person than a tool.
>>576793891>The reliable worker doesn't get upset every time someone talks about how to make moneyYou don't have a game though. Why do I need you to tell me to make a game with AI to make money when you ... don't. Can't, even. Apparently.

It's a tool that translates an English language specification into a programming language implementation.I've made several smaller games for jams with AI, and it was honestly quite a fun experience, but I also don't use it much for my bigger projects because it becomes too cumbersome if I want to maintain a high level of creative control. Anything you can describe in very specific and detailed language, most of the better models can fairly accurately convert that into working code within the context of your codebase. It does feel like you're having to handhold a retarded junior dev, but it does work.If you're struggling to get an AI to implement what you want, you're probably not doing a good job at defining specs. It's certainly not easy, and often times, it can be faster to just code the thing yourself because it can require a 100+ word paragraph to get it to write 10 lines of code.Image gen also appears to be fairly good nowadays.>>576794795>every poster is the same personretard>>576795753Outsourcing is a resource like assets are resources. >>576796671>It's a tool that translates an English language specification into a programming language implementation. And thinks for you. And designs for you. And you know, makes the entire thing for you or at least that seems to be the desire for so many. What a great "tool". Very unlike any other tool actually used by craftsmen and workers in history. Almost like it's not actually a tool at all.
>>576796851It doesn't actually think. It doesn't actually design. When an LLM "thinks", what it's doing is loading more tokens into its context window, which it does by predicting the next most probable token based on the current context and its weights. "Effort" is just the name for the dial you can turn to tell it roughly how many additional tokens to generate before it's allowed a stop condition. LLMs are not magic. It's just math.
Nobody ever looked at their wrench and said "I can't wait until this can make the entire house for me". A tool is understood for it's use. AI is a massive shortcut for making slop for those who abuse it, which is seemingly everyone, since AI users are constantly accusing eachother of using this "tool" incorrectly everytime someone mentions a new model sucking up their tokens.

It's actually pretty easy to make basic functionality for a game in godot or similar shit with AI knowing pure basics of programming and nothing else. You would think this liberation from the learning curve would result in some sort of golden age of indie games because now everyone can make a game, but instead the current meta is low-quality disposable streamer/youtuber slop. The same with the software. You go on twitter and everyone is basedpogging about AI making an app UI with one prompt, so you would expect a wave of software but there is nothing. In fact, for the past half of the decade there hasn't been a single project of any kind that involves AI as the primary production tool. Really makes you think.
So this is the guy you have programming your game for you?

>>576812935>now everyone can make a gameIf this were true, there would be vibecoded games posted here constantly, whipped up in a matter of days for fun. >>576817152Are building an audience right now? Because if you don't have at least somewhat of an audience your game won't really sell or, alternatively, you will have to spend time afterwards building an audience. Sure you might have already seen enough of those games through streamers and youtube videos, don't settle for that. Play the actual game. It's an entirely different experience to play vs watch. Marketing is THE best motivator. Sharing your game regularly will keep you interested in your own game, it makes your game real, second best only to having people play your demo or something. >Ultimate Marketing Guide for Indie Devshttps://docs.google.com/document/d/1JR8fsg6Tt_cvGHtcqb0rtdU84bbzNq7vYL_knvGCFJg/edit?tab=t.0>Small indies are missing a key thing. Trust and credibility. Another principle of marketing is “The Rule of 7” which states that a potential customer needs to be exposed to your brand 7 times before they ever consider a purchase. This is because potential customers need time to build an opinion and familiarity with you. They need to see your game, and this happens over time. Marketing is a marathon. When indie devs focus solely on driving traffic to their Steam page, their marketing can feel impersonal and it scares potential customers away. You have to be showing your game to people without always telling them to wishlist or go to your steam page. Just show them the game. Eventually they see it a second or third time (because they like it or the algorithms think they might) and they are then ready to go and wishlist it. Because you didn't nag them everytime (also known as shilling) you earned their trust.
>>576835734I'll have you know that's one of my better meals since grandma sent me some veggies. This is what an average indie dev's meal looks like.

>>576837230Nubby isn't but Ball x Pit has pretty heavy incremental features. Of course it's more like roguelite meta progression but I'd argue that incrementals are games that maximize meta progression and minimize the gameplay and/or run length. Nubby is however a great example of modern slop that hit it big. Every wannabe dev should play it to build an understanding of what it did well.

>>576831558He's sort of got a point but the real problem is that to make a game for proper unc taste you're either making a true roguelike or you're making something that takes years to make. Boomer shooter is about the smallest type of unc game and those aren't exactly small unless you skimp on the visuals. I think some of the uncs are getting won over by these new types of games. Autobattlers and other sorts of "games for tired people" have a huge unc audience imo. Then there's the lot of roguelites that take the sparks from old games and turn it into something new. Fully agree that you should play all kinds of games to expand your horizons as a developer. Would a roguelite mini-MMO work?Servers would have a 500-player cap instead of thousands. World would be smaller than the WoW-sized continents people are used to. Players could host servers themselves or it could be open-sourced by a chain link of many PCs.Roguelite gameplay promotes "sessions" that make up a particular campaign. Early game, mid game, endgame could all be done in a single day, or perhaps a week at most, before the server is considered "mature" and people are decked out in the best gear. Fresh server resets would be regular. If you die, you're made slightly stronger and can rejoin the session as a catch-up mechanic while players who retain their first life get achievements, titles, mounts, blah blah. If anyone has ever played WC3 they've had "MMO" maps that simulated the experience over a few hours or even half a day and it was only 12 players, I believe.

3d modeling is the best thing ever. you make a single model and now you have infinite ammount of animations and poses without having to worry about proportions
>>576845395is AI better at animating a 3d model you give it vs. asking it to generate and animate a sprite each time?
>>576843189>>576844879Pic related is what AI said about broadphases but it is kind of wrong because it leaves out an optimization trick that is unique to BVH/rTrees/etc and not all implementations are as well made (for performance) than others and leave a lot on the table. With an rTree or BVH or other tree-like structure you get an optimization trick that speeds it up greatly if you put an additional bounding box onto the object that is 2-3x the size of the object, and it is that bounding box you will add and remove to the bvh/tree instead of the object's smaller bounding box or collider or whatever you're doing idk. the reason is now if for example that object is moving every frame, you do not have to reinsert it into the tree/bvh every frame, you let it move within its bounding box that is 2-3x the size of the actual object, and as long as its movement this frame has not left that larger bounding box, you do not have to do a reinsert of that bounding box into the tree, which speeds it up massively, because per-frame reinsertions are the biggest slowdown with the physics implementation im describing.i'm sure this is worded completely poorly but meh. dont it myself on my own physics engine and it supports way more the average popular physics engine that people actually use. although it was made purely for collision solving not joints or stacks or anything like that because my game doesn't need that shit
>>576845805so contrary to what "they say" a tree (such as rtree, my favorite) is actually fantastic for a game with lots of moving objects. they'll tell you it isn't due to "reinsertion cost" but they aren't using the trick i described as well as other tricks. tricks which only work on trees, not grids or SAP or whatever else to my knowledge

>>576859581a good game will advertise itself and if it doesn't then your game just isn't as good as you think it is.
>>576859581>I dont wanna to advertise to retardssorry bro but virtually ALL businesses rely exclusively on retards who don't know what's good for them
>go to the vibe coding general on /g/>see what they built>literally nothing of valueyeah they won mass delusion lmao
>>576859581I understand that Anon, but like a narcissist science fiction writer said once: "you must make it go right!".You gotta "handle" the situation and pour all of your energies into it, else you will fail and your non product will prevent your product from expanding.
>>576859808>of valuea load bearing qualifier in this case
>playing wc3 for reference>it's not even an rts>it's just a really annoying point-and-click adventure game

>>576860381kinda felt the same about empire earth (which is a good thing), but i think it still has more rts than wc3
>>576860381Warcraft III was a downgrade from II in every way.
someone wrote a literal novel of feedback for my game. all negative. all assuming my game was meant to be something else.
>>576861216hit'em with a "this game wasnt meant for you, chuddie"
>>576859581There are less humiliating ways to get your game in front of people that don't involve directly pitching your game in people's faces like you're a hot dog seller at a football match. However I can't reveal them to you because then some youtube grifter would pick up on it and make a youtube video and everyone will start doing it and it'd stop working. (Something similar actually happened in this thread before.)
For me marketing feels like hitting the gym for some time and then posting shirtless photos like>Look at me! Pretty impressive, right? I bet you want some of this!
How the fuck do I make UI that works on all aspect ratios? If I match height then it's in theory fine for 16:9 and wider but then some degenerate with a 16:10 resolution will complain. Then if I match width it will get all fucked on anything that's wider than 16:9. Why isn't there like a fit to screen option?
>>576862157There is? Render your UI to a texture and then resize the texture to the window size? With that being said, you could just have different aspect ratio textures that match the aspect ratios of common resolutions to avoid stretch/shrink as well. Also dynamic layouts with anchors and % sizes. All trivially achievable if you're rolling out your own shit, if you're enginecuck then I guess just search YouTube for tutorials.
>>576862157have UI elements dock to screen edges. the parts in the middle should resize/tile or be empty so you just need to space them
>>576862157You make everything fit to 16:9 and only stretch or tile the background images to the actual monitor aspect ratio. With some HUD elements you can attach them to the side windows but I don't typically bother. As someone who uses ultrawide myself, I'm fine with 16:9 UI.
>>576861282I don't want to poke the hornets nest. they might have discord buddies ready to downvote me into oblivion
>>576862437>>576862976I have basically a 25-50-25 window split in my game for the main chunks and then they have some vertical splits. Some parts of it get fucked one way or another. I need like an option that adds black bars to the side if the resolution is too wide and black bars above and below if it's too tall but Unity can only do one or the other.
>>576862157just force an aspect ratio and hard code ui positions
How do I stop caring about the existance of better indie games in the same genre as mine? I know 2 cakes yadda yadda but I can't stop feeling like there is no point in making a game that looks like Vagante for example if Vagante already exists, even if change some mechanics
So, lots of attention direcred at "making it" *which means making a million). What if i wanted to make an average salary and live off gamedev? What should i build? In other words, what are games that minimize risk at the cost of a lower upper ceiling?
>>576865241You shouldn't stop caring. Never stop caring. Hold yourself to higher standards. Stop making [existing game, but worse] and start making [existing game, but better].
>>576865438There will always be a better game
>>576865250- Porn VNs- Horror asset flips- Incrementals
>>576865250Horror games you can produce in a 6month - 1 year timeframe. The Puppet Combo approach.Other genres come in and out of style way too much but horror people seem to have an endless appetite for this shit.
>>576865542That's only because you're not good enough. Perhaps you'll never be good enough.
what games do germans like?
>>576866925Crafty buildy simulators
>>576867582a german roasted my game (the novel mentioned earlier) for not being a simulator
>>576865250That's like asking what casino games should you play to win an average salary. Gamedev is different only in that skills are a prerequisite to even getting lucky
>>576868345>That's like asking what casino games should you play to win an average salary.Blackjack. Everyone knows that. The odds are 51% in favor of the player.>>576865250>What if i wanted to make an average salary and live off gamedev? What should i build?Crafty builders, niche RPGs
>>576865241Nah I do the opposite. I watch a lot of game dev logs on youtube of games way worse than mine so I can feel better
So with what I set up, I should be able to do a bit right when I wake up and before I go to work. Should balance well enough I hope.
