so how powerful of a PC do you actually need to emulate up to, say, sixth gen? I've got an old Intel 1150 system that just needs some storage and the idea was a dedicated "Old Games" box. it's currently got my old 1070 Ti and 4690k in it, but only 8GB of RAM. could up that to 32 pretty cheap.

So how are the subtitle being linked to what's happening in-game? Is it waiting for the cutscene to trigger through some flag? Fetching lines at the right time from a series of flags? Seems like this could be used to nigger-rig translations in a lot of games, really.

"Up to sixth gen" is hard to say.
Because some PS2 games run on a potato, but some need a NASA super computer to get a stable frame rate.
>>
>>577054945
>So how are the subtitle being linked to what's happening in-game?
My Mednafen fork intercepts all commands issued to the CD drive that say something like "jump to the sector at logical block address xxxx on the CD and read it" and checks if there is a subtitle associated with that address.

Let's say we have an entry like this:

$12345
@2000 SUPER SPOOKY CASTLE IV: NOSFERATU'S REVENGE
+3000 The last vampire bat is in captivity.
+1500 Transylvania is at peace.

When the game issues the command "jump to and read sector 12345 from the CD," mednafen will see that I've attached a subtitle to that address, start a countdown that lasts 2,000 milliseconds, then show the title message.
3,000 milliseconds after that message, it'll show the message "The last vampire bat is in captivity."
1,500 ms after THAT message, it'll show the message "Transylvania is at peace."

I haven't implemented this for cartridge-based games, but it could probably work there too, at least for old ones like SNES and so on.

Note that the only actually emulation-related part of mednafen I had to touch was the CD drive emulation, which is why it automatically runs in all the CD-ROM-based consoles it supports, and I did not have to go into the weeds of how each console's processor etc. functions internally.
The way I designed the syntax, where the first letter of a line determines the line's function, also makes it possible to write extremely efficient parsers for this in a few lines of assembly, using a jump table.
That's why I'm so optimistic that it could even be implemented in physical consoles with hardware mods:
Intercept the messages that go to the CD, have a tiny microcontroller process them and read subtitles from a bit of flash memory, then patch the console's output signal to show text messages.

Also, it doesn't have to be just subtitles. I envisioned this format having different tiers, where in upper tiers you could also program it to send rumble events, show pics etc.

Haven't had this much fun in quite a while, it kind of rekindled my love for vidya.
I slightly regret that I didn't get a Pico 4 for just a little bit more.

>Good battery life?
no, it's atrocious. I had to buy a battery pack which I now carry around with me during multiplayer sessions, which works fine for minigolf but not for action games.

This phone has a ~450dpi display and is absolutely god tier for emulation.

I figured out the issue, there's a setting that changes the shaders to act on a per frame basis, it's called sub frame someting

There's a 2nd option for rolling scanline but that breaks everything.

Then CRT Guest comes in and the result is flawless and beyond beautiful. Gameboy and NES especially look amazing.

You can still use regular ass GSDX with reliquary. Use it for that fight... Unless the saves are not compatible between standalone and shart, it wouldn't surprise me.
Also, I'm pretty all those problems are caused by the crt update from PGS. Since LRPS2 never bothered to implement that because of RA extensive sharder support, that may be the reason why you don't have problem with it.

Putting aside controller differences, I think all Wii games can theoretically run on the GameCube. However, given that the former is slightly more powerful, a bit of visual downgrade could be needed, depending on the game.

Comfy maxxing in my living room w/ OLED + 5.1 or if I feel like getting really real, my CRT-TV or VGA monitor emu setup. Some day you'll have your own place... on second thought, maybe not considering how grim things are in the 3rd world and the 3rd world the west is becoming for zoomers.

Such a sadness.

>>577302936
No that's stupid. The wii had a lot more ram. If a game required any more than what the gamecube had then there's no way it would run.

That's what I may end up doing for the MM9 recomp for Dolphin if DolRecomp doesn't work out in a few areas. (Though, it's a 2D game, so it shouldn't be THAT hard to make a recomp of.)

irrelevant to the games I play on phones, who cares if the cursor in Majin Tensei takes 2ms longer to move to the next tile

nigga just let people decide for themselves which controls and screens they find acceptable

Literally what is the point of a recomp when it's no different from running it in an emulator? Decomps sound way better to me.

Probably because they're WAY more involved. I'm sure LLMs could probably do those too if you pointed them to headless versions of Ghidra/IDA, but it's a lot easier to get a hacky recomp implemented.
>>
>>577307502
One nice thing about them is that they're a little easier to link to dumb broads you want to introduce old games to. Not that you can't do this with most emulators, but you could very easily make a zip file or installer with the game, recomp, batch file, and shortcut to it on the desktop. I think a lot of people freeze up at emulator setup and see it as too much work. There's also the chance they won't have the shader comp issues and bugs emulators might have even under the best circumstances. Overall, I find the pretty redundant and in the worst cases inferior to conventional emulation, but a good recomp/decomp with unique features is respectable especially if the platform it's on sucks to emulate.

Github seems to be broken, but after many F5, I managed to download SkyEmu and it seems the save for my GBA game is compatible, even if I didnt download the BIOS, I hope is going to be fine.

Is picrel still worth using if it hasn't been updated in over two years? I mostly wanna use it with Mednaffe for PC Engine and PSX since I'm sick of RetroArch's UI.

If the lack of an upstream Dragon Hopper fix is any indication, it's probably not worth using. (At least for Virtual Boy.)

>>577319287
>I'm gonna go from a baroque and bloated UX to basically no UX at all (or stapling on some clunk-ass frontend)
Not sure if this is gonna go how you want. Consider Ares. It emulates those platforms too. What about Retroarch is buckbreaking you?
>>
You could just try Brainlethawk too.
>>
>>577319287
>sick of RetroArch's UI.
Use one of the other ones then. It comes with like 17 different UI's.
You can completely customise them.
You can make it only has like 3 options in the menu if you want, and hide everything else.
>>
>>577319746
I wasn't really considering using it for Virtual Boy emulation.
>>577320380
My toaster can barely run Ares, otherwise it's what I'd go with because it has a good UI and easy to use shaders.
>What about Retroarch is buckbreaking you?
The UI is shit and the devs refuse to give it a traditional mouse-driven UI that's worth using. When I use Mesen-CE, my current emu of choice for NES and SNES, it's a night and day difference.

>Use one of the other ones then. It comes with like 17 different UI's.
In which universe? My copy (Linux Flatpak) only has Ozone, the XMB, RGUI, glui, and the Desktop Menu, none of which are ideal. Ozone is the one I tolerate the most out of all of them, because I'm somewhat used to putting up with its bullshit.
The Desktop Menu is a complete joke because despite being mouse-driven, it's nothing like Mesen, Ares, Snes9x, Kega Fusion, etc.
>>577320638
Bizhawk is shit on Linux. Besides, I'm not interested in TASing.

I can believe that for the LLE N64 core it has but the others too...? Defies belief.
>>
>>577325931
Why not just continue using MesenCE for PCE and Duckstation for PS1 then? I don't think you're sigarettenstank, so don't tell me that Poundland Skiing (PAL) cutting a second of audio off is stopping you.

Does it lack any features you need?
Are there games you want to play that it doesn't support?
If not, then yes it's worth using.

His main gripe is UX, which Mednafen nearly completely lacks unless you use a front end which doesn't gracefully allow you to change settings mid session like an emulator with a properly integrated UX does.
>>
Spergoids like ryphecha and richard42g refusing to add GUIs to mednafen and mupenplus respectively was my gateway into Retroarch in the first fucking place. GG assclowns. Probably half the reason RA's as big as it is today.

I've thought about making an AI sloppa fork that DearImGUIs everything, but that doesn't seem all that soulful.

I'm surprised he hasn't given in and took the Claude route himself. Maybe he'd chill out if he were able to fix all these obscure yurojank bugs himself.

it isn't, dev even open sourced it faster because people were claiming it was
>>
>>577307502
Decomps take a lot of time. With recomps you get 90% of the benefits of actual ports. Just look at Majora's Mask recomp, it has mod support, the usual graphics enhancements, higher fps, etc
But sure having the source code is better, but you just won't get that kind of autistic dedication for every game.
