creating the assets, good animations, assembling a workflow for a full game(time efficiency)

small scale production you can test the reaction to online. A small area, art. gameplay optional.

Real answer: No but you should understand the code that's being made. Eventually the AI will run into a problem it can't solve, and if you don't have the technical know how to at least help it figure it out, you'll be fucked. Don't let the AI make you complacent. It's a tool, not your servant. You still need to bear much of the mental load if you're going to make a good video game.

As someone who ran into this issue fairly recently with Claude, I can assure you it's still a real thing. It will depend on what you're trying to do. I was trying to build something off of a poorly documented set of systems in an engine, and Claude was misunderstanding how things were supposed to work, sending us on a wild goose chase in the wrong direction. I had to do a lot of manual testing to figure out where Claude's knowledge gaps were, and this was after I also manually fed Claude the documentation. The AI got stuck in a loop, wanting to try the same tests over and over again, and I had to break it out of that mindset and find the solutions we needed. The AI is powerful. It's not perfect.

Just start making the game you want to NOW.
You will never feel like you have the necessary skills and will keep using that as an excuse to "productively" procrastinate by grinding some skill or watching a tutorial, but it's just procrastination and not productive at all.

>You still need to bear much of the mental load if you're going to make a good video game.
Why do you think they crashed out trying to make a prototype? They couldn't handle even that much mental load.

Vibe "coding" is a fake hobby for wannabe devs. If you don't believe it, check out the vibecoding general in /g/. They do literally nothing except gossip about industry news and blogposting about whatever they are tinkering with in the newest models. That and crying about their tokens being sucked up by the biggest scam industry in history.

You're gonna be left behind though if you don't join them in this purgatory. Two more weeks (years)!
>>
>>577102076
There's nothing anyone could post that would change your mind.
>>
>>577102492
A single progress post from a vibecoder would be enough to change my mind at this point. I've been waiting over 2 years for a single vibecoder to make a game here. It will never happen. In the meantime the general was bludgeoned to death by a vibe"coder" spamming it for a full year. That was a perfect illustration of how twisted this contingency is. agdg has never died. There has always been multiple threads everyday for almost 15 years. The AI spammer killed it to the point that each thread dragged out for 3-4 days.
>>
>>577102492
the complete lack of meaningful things is the main issue that can't be tackled.

The vibecoders are getting mangled in /g/. That board is exhausted with them and has realized the easiest way to defuse them is to ask them to show something they made. It's an army of literal paid shills talking about how cool it is to spend money on tokens and gullible kids with learning disabilities who really want their to be a shortcut around learning to program.

They have all the means available to slop up anything in their imagination and they make nothing because creative people are not dependent on a slop generation machine or chatbot.

The more I work on this game, the more it feels like it's going to take longer to finish. This is all despite the fact I'm seemingly making good progress. Why, why do I feel this way? Is it because I have yet to take the plunge to 3D? A lot of the code is easily adjusted to work with 3D, yet for some reason it feels like I'm making a mistake that will increase dev time. Yet I don't believe my success will be anywhere near as good if I stay in 2D. The game just works better in 3D.

Not only is gamedev not easy, it's the most difficult software development, and I say this having worked on numerous enterprise apps. If you're making a game you have to make an application with hundreds of features, it has to have great design, be intuitive or have good tutorials, it has to run on as many systems as possible, you're making a PRODUCT that is extremely complex.

Like Steve Jobs said in "Jobs"
>it's gotta run like an APPLIANCE.

As dependable as your toaster, your dishwasher or drying machine.

And you have to pull off technical feats that sometimes might have been called impossible. You make it happen. That's what engineers do.

>>
>>577111892
I recommend Microsoft's To Do app. Or find something equivalent. You don't look at the giant list of tasks, you grab a few and assign them to your day. Your daily tasks are all you look at then. You have to put blinders on yourself so you only look forward.

Limit reviewing the entire project to once a week or something, and then you can determine to remove some of your features or lighten the work load an make sure you aren't spiraling into an infinite project.
>>
>>577112402
I just have a todo list that is a pile that gets bigger and bigger and bigger and sometimes I go back and clean it up

but bugs and shit get solved the moment they're found
>>
>>577116202

I just used the quad mesh from Godot as a sanity test for the "grass" blades. I am planning to make better grass in Blender, can skip to that ig. I can also manually set the normals in a shader and see if that helps... tomorrow

>>577125443
But I wanted to do it myself ;n;

Yeh you might want to just export a quad (plane) from Blender and import that. And if it still has weird normals, you select it in Blender and recalculate the normals then export and reimport.

>>577126262
>>577126493
To be clear, the issue is likely the quad on which you set those blades of grass. One side has a different normal tangent than the other so it appears split down the middle. Your grass shader is orienting itself with that. So you want to put that shader on a quad that has uniform normals on one side all facing same direction, which you might want to export from Blender. With Godot, I usually always use my own quads, columns, etc because this issue is annoying.

I didn't even set a shader yet, it's just green quads instanced via a multimesh on a plane. :( Wonder if I should put the grass on rotated quadmesh instead of a plane, I recall those being fucky

Miserable people love to drag everyone else in their misery, they have to insult and start conflicts with people who are enjoying their life because they have to be miserable just like them.
Just ignore them, seriously, don't even bother trying to have conversation with them: at the end of the day they are just people with nothing better to do the whole day, discussing with them will only feed their unemployment.

80 days left, I owe 2200 minutes of work. I'm feeling a bit optimistic because my to-do list has almost halved in the past month. 85% of the angst you guys have will go away when you make a cool game. A game that you know people already like and want to play. It changes everything. It's not really the same. You can always queue up into another lobby until you get banned. Any feedback with real consequences in the video game world comes from authority figures rather than from peers, whereas IRL, it's your peers who will shun you and perhaps even slam your face into the pavement for being such an insufferable faggot.

The worst part about using AI is that both your game (which used like 20~30% AI) and someone else's game (which used 80~100%) will be labeled the same way: lazy slop trash. Just because the tag-AI. There is no distinction made regarding the level of AI usage, which is completely unfair in my opinion,
>>
>>577166570
Yeah and I really hate that having a live LOCAL llm inside your game gets the same label.
Gamers used to be excited at the prospect of real AI controlling the npcs in a game but now when that's FINALLY viable to do any game that does it is thrown in the gutter alongside ranjeet's 3js incremental that was made in ten minutes.

OK, slept on it and I figured it out, and I think I can explain.

Turns out it's the random rotation value in the multimesh that was giving issues. The "randomness" of an instance's rotation is per tri of your target mesh. A low rotation randomness would create a bunch of meshes that skew towards the same rotation, on the same tri. From certain viewing angles you can see a pattern because those meshes are facing a light source in the same way, therefor receiving lighting the same way.

More here: https://www.reddit.com/r/godot/comments/17w4v3l/help_multimeshinstance3d_rotates_mesh_instances/

In pic rel I have the rotation randomness maxed out, but you can still see that the rightmost meshes skew towards a different angle compared to the leftmost meshes.

i wonder if using a game engine can cause commitment issues indirectly.
like, think about it, you've tinkered on a game from scratch for 6 months. now starting a new project would mean you have to write everything from scratch again.
but in unity? no problem, just create a new project. it's still all there.

it's like being in a relationship where you can always quit and immediately find a new girlfriend with the same good baseline of features.

ofc i'm not directly arguing for making a game from scratch. but i keep noticing how every "advancement" has psychological effects that backfire. just like ai, ai makes everything possible, yet also conditions you to become more lazy.

it seems very hard to use new tools without becoming more brainfucked.

ai makes me realize i never really made progress. i just randomly had projects and coded stuff, just to feel busy. but once i achieved what i wanted, i was done. now that ai can do all that stuff for me instantly, i don't even know what to do anymore. i had ideas for voxel worlds, pathfinding graph demos, weather systems or whatever, but i didn't really have a vision for a game. i always deluded myself into thinking i make progress by reinventing wheels over and over.

the scale doesn't matter. consider the following
a car has a length of 5m
a matchbox car has a length of 5cm
so disregarding the obvious stupidity of using a high poly model for a 5cm asset, if i download a model/asset/prefab/whatever, i'll just scale it to fit my needs. i don't care about whatever scale it was originally, i can just change it in seconds.

it's a quote from a book
the metaphor is that you're paralyzed by all the things you could do in life that you decide to commit to nothing instead out of fear of missing out

it describes project-hopping nodevs who pose as 'idea guys' well
sometimes you just have to choose one path and lock in even if all other paths start looking greener the longer you work on something
this works so long as your game isn't doomed to fail from the start, but even that perception can be false

Corposhit is slow because Karen who got promoted to project management so that the company can avoid a discrimination lawsuit assigned Kumar to a task resulting in a ChatGPT response being pasted into a synchronous process instead of an asynchronous event, adding another 10k dead cycles to every frame. Repeat this times 100 to complete any feature. Indieslop is just as slow because indie devs are just as retarded. Many unreal games run great, the ones not made by retards at least.

I'm happy to spend <1k cycles/s and <1kb RAM (i.e. <0.0001% of usage on any toaster from this millennia) on an robust and extensible system that's both backwards and forwards compatible to save myself hundreds to thousands of hours of debugging. (My modders will also thank me.) Interned strings over enums for anything that could possible change in future versions is just a simple tradeoff this industry has made since we have to deal with thousands of objects entering and exiting a scene tree per second each with their own library of functions and animations. You'd understand this if you'd ever made anything more complicated than what your baby's first CS class project made you do.

Roblox is a bigger audience but they take 95% of the revenue from any sales from your game. You have to be willing to consider these caveats, not just go after whatever you think is biggest. If all that matters to you is the biggest market, make mobile games. Mobile gamers are 80% of the total gaming market.

This guy watched the memoria videos and saw her buying trash games for $20 because that's the theme of the video. She refunds some of those you know. This kind of thing happens all the times where youtubers make meme content with bad games and devs decide they can just make a bad game and it will sell because it's bad.

/agdg/ is defined by the cristobaalian cycle invented by THE schizo of stagnation himself.
cris may be the most important philosopher of this era. Because he's the only philosopher of this era I know besides myself.

Hunh, this whole grass thing turned out to be a lot easier than expected. Spent maybe like ~2 hours today in total on it. To be fair I don't 100% understand the shader code, but meh. Got the grass swaying in the breeze, bending under the player and added pretty cloud shadows rolling over it.
Most online examples pass the player coordinate as a variable to the shader in a script, but my lazy ass uses: vec3 player_pos = CAMERA_POSITION_WORLD, seems to work just fine.
Making a webm at an acceptable bitrate is much harder and beyond me

It's heart warming to me. The early days of prototyping stuff like this was very fulfilling. To remain in that state throughout your adult years, always feeling good about it enough to share it and tell people

Yes. Today you might have just an idle and a run state, but tomorrow you might have to add a jump and a glide and a dance and a dead. Next thing you know, your blend tree has to deal with a partial ragdoll upper body responding to a physics impulse while a procedural skeletal modifier aligns your feet to the ground, and you know damn well I'm not referencing to that %GeneralSkeleton or ^"RightFoot" by enum, but by string. Come back after you work on something more complicated than baby's first CS101 state machine.
