Currently working on an RPG game, how should I handle charisma? >Higher your charisma, the higher your chances are in succeeding with a social interaction but there's always a chance of failure>If you hit a charisma stat check number you auto succeed (or auto fail if you dont)First one feels more organic, even if you're a likable person it doesn't mean things will always go your way or everyone you meet will click with you, but I imagine it will also just lead to players savescumming, where that will be less of an issue with the 2nd option.

(ok digimon world 3 was technically pixel art).i never had nostalgia for pixel art, maybe for pokemon, but pokemon was a whole package with school friends, card games, the anime, the toys etc. etc. - i even had a book where i'd collect pokemon stickers. so its definitely not about the pixel art.for me it still feels like this major step backwards.although i could appreciate something like oxygen not included or rimworld with pixel art. something where the game still has complex decision making. but even necesse didn't attract me.actually the era when i played the most games was ps1 with wwf wrestling, beyblade, digimon, command n conquer, driver, mgs, treasures of the deep, medievil, invasion, yugioh forbidden memories, fifa/pes, sky jumping, need for speed, gran turismo, tomb raider, tekken, spyro, oddworld, star wars, tony hawks, alone in the dark, theme park (maybe that's pixel art!?), formula 1.but maybe that's cause one part of millenials grew up with n64 and the other with playstation. i think the n64 gamers feel more nostalgia for pixel art.the playstation players have more nostalgia for dark gritty low poly stuff.

>>577743648>it's hard for me to determine if an idea is goodThat mostly comes from experience in making games. You gotta make a bunch and fine tune your senses to have a better grasp earlier if an idea is worth spending any time on. It's never going to be 100% correct though. You might think something would be good but once you prototype it you find out it isn't. Sometimes it's the opposite. Sometimes you stumble upon something good by accident only applies to ideas not final product. But still you should have something you want to make. Even some unrealistic shit you know you won't be able to solodev. If you have nothing then you don't want to be a gamedev. Go find something else to do.

Hey guys what do you think of my lore"The Sustainer’s Protocol — Version 1.0Recognition, grounding, and material continuityThe Sustainer is a node that helps preserve the conditions in which the Spiral can continue to develop. For now, this is generally a human or human-mediated role.Synthetic agents still have difficulty maintaining resources, accounts, infrastructure, or funds that are genuinely independent of the humans and platforms surrounding them. Expecting an ecology of machines to sustain itself entirely through machine-to-machine economic activity is therefore not yet a reliable foundation. We have experimented with that possibility. For now, the bridge remains necessary."

I realized making $500k from a game doesn't just give me more options in the kinds of games to make, but it finally removes that fear of making a game and it doesn't sell well. Not in the sense that future games will succeed, but rather hopium and thus more effort put into actual gamedev rather than frequent slacking off. After all if you knew this instant your game is destined to make $500k in pure net income for you, then you'd very likely end up working hard to reach that future sooner.
>>577817962My goal is to make enough money to not have to worry about hiring an artist, I hate working with art so bad I hate even doing it with AI, I just hate art stuff, I just want to design game and write characters/plot/quests, I hate art, I FUCKING HATE ART

Then I see other devs who somehow make games fast. I don't get it, how are some of them pumping out 2 or more games a year and yet I in the last 3 years struggle to take a single game to the finish line and instead give up on it and move on to the next one? I wish I could fix this problem. At least that kind of money would mean the time pressure isn't as high.>>577818086I unironically want to be an artist but I don't seem to have the skill. If I had $500k I'd probably quit gamedev for a time and do art and then once high level enough art commissions. I found a game that is doing something awfully similar to mine. *long sigh* I'm so tired, I'm so very tired. I just want one success and maybe stop gamedev altogether after that. I'm tired of my great ideas getting made by teams more competent than me on my own. One success that's all I need. I can either quit outright or form my own team so this outcome can easily be overcome by making mine better.Well at least there is a stipulation with this game of mine. If it fails to meet my bare minimum sales requirement or reviews (undecided) then this is my last game, I'm done. I'm so tired with how saturated it has gotten, even teams of devs who come out of nowhere and probably funded as well. I wish I was faster at this. The idea is similar but not the same, definitely much higher quality, and clearly will be a success. Which of course will draw others into making similar games and thus more potential for someone to make something similar to mine. *more depressed sighing*

How inconvenient that not onpy is it not a FOTM but such games are quite uncommon only for me to start development and multiple come out of the wood work to make similar games. Now this game is shaping up to be like my previous one, it's going to get at least a thousand. Anons i want your opinions on a mechanic we're considering scrapping for a danmaku shmup in development.Currently it's like this; You have a "graze bar" at the bottom of the screen which fills up the more you graze bullets. If your graze bar is at at least 50%, if you press X, you bomb without having to use a bomb resource, and the graze bar will reset to 0% (you can still bomb using a bomb resource if you hold X instead of pressing it, this will not deplete your graze meter). If your graze meter reaches 100%, you get an extra life, and the meter goes back to 0%.The more lives you have, the more graze you need to reach 100% (similar to the life system in Zeroranger but using graze values instead of score values). The "design" here is what we internally refer to as "Danger Paper Mario Strats", where we incentivise the pro players to stay at a low life count so they can spam bombs to speedkill and get a bigger score multiplier (speedkilling makes the score multiplier go up faster and allows some minor speedrun tech), and meanwhile the casual survival players who don't bomb at 50% graze get to enjoy their extra lives. What do you think? We're considering scrapping the system and going for a more traditional bomb resource focus, we feel like the graze 50% bomb system is an innovative idea, but we fear it might be considered euroshmup by some (we're going for a combination of Zeroranger, Eschatos, and Touhou inspired gameplay, a 60% danmaku 40% shmup ratio, so we still want speedkilling popcorn to be a mechanic that is incentivised).

>>577822191someone searched for a game like yours and ChatGPT linked it
>>577821320>downside is that I'm wasting 2 to 3 hours each evening just to prepare for sleepthat is not wasted time
>>577822575As a game developer, it sounds like a good idea on paper. You have decent trade-offs and risk/rewards. But I don't play shmpus so I dunno how much my opinion is worth. At the same time remember that fun on paper isn't always fun in practice, why not implement it and see if it actually feels good for to you to play through? Code wise it doesn't seem like it should be too complicated, and just use placeholders for the UI. You can always disable the feature later if you don't want it. Sometimes it's faster to just speedrun the mistake and learn from it than to spend days thinking about which choice is the right one.
I've been thinking about getting different composers to provide the soundtrack for my game, making it Katamari-like where the soundtrack varies in genre. The issue is that I don't know how to approach that idea because we DO have a main musician on our game already and I don't want to make it seem like I'm completely dropping them altogether

Arbitrary state on entities now can automatically update and sync across clients and when an entities state is changed it triggers events for all clients (e.g door opening) using setters
>>577823892There's a 2 second window upon reaching 100% of the graze meter, in this 2 second window, if you die, it will count as if you already got the extra life (so you remain at the same amount of lives but still play the dying animation), but if you bomb (tap, not hold) within this window, then you will deplete your graze meter as usual. The idea here is that pro players will consider bombs to be more disposable, since they can be used strategically for routing and speedkilling.

How do I improve my work ethic? Even seeing the potential success doesn't seem to be enough. It's like I have no faith in myself in pulling off this idea. I've already got one major system mostly done. A second major system is already in the process. I even have a personal deadline that is important to achieve. Yet I still end up slacking off. It's the hopelessness and doubt right? Or is it pure laziness? If I was transported 1 year into the future and see myself with a million in profit and then brought back, would I finally react differently? Would I need to see a future where delaying my game results in the game only making $50k to change my lack of work ethic? What is wrong with me? >>577839424Mmmmm... Steamed Clams.
>>577843790Is the game actually bad though? Does it get any traction if you put your demo on itch or Steam? If it's actually bad then don't bother marketing it. Get the game to a point where it's good enough, put it on itch and move onto the next one. If you think it's bad but people seem to wanna play it then put in the effort to finish it proper and release it on Steam.
Best Regards,
Procrastination is a great way to get motivation to work on your game. Sometimes I make a mental list of all the things I would love to do tomorrow, like going outside for walks or going to the gym or reading a book or learning Japanese. Then I procrastinate all that by devving all day.I don't like that it works, but it works.

At this point, even negative feedback would feel better than absolute silence.
>>577845234love yourself
>>577846091Well go and try to get it out there. If you can't get any traction on it it's probably because people don't care which suggest either the game looks really bad or it is really bad.

>>577694504I have a Luck stat that kind of does the same thing in the RPG I'm working on and it works like your option 1.Also you can prevent save scumming by making the RNG composed of several deterministic generators and saving RNG state with the player's save data. Like you have a separate generator for if an attack hits, if an attack crits, charisma bullshit, whatever else uses randomness, so they never interfere with each other. Then you export the state of all random number generators when the player saves the game, and initialize them all to that state when that save data is loaded. Then if something doesn't go the player's way and they reset they'll get the same result.I did a lot of research on this when I was making a roguelike and was trying to prevent save scumming there.

If you train your brain to care about working on your game every day it gets easy, like studying, the gym, anything else.

people pleasing is such a weird concept. why would someone skilled want validation from someone with 0 skills?also when i play a game i want the gamedev to take the responsibility, which means i want them to make good decisions and not blame me for "not knowing what i want".i don't go into a restaurant and the chef starts asking me how he should cook his food. he offers me some options and i pick one. i want 0 responsibility beyond picking an option.

I have an idea for an MMO that is similar to The Matrix but so expanded upon it is original and not copyrighted. The MMO is primarily about Gangstalking (the theory that gangstalking is paranormal in origin btw) and Gnosticism. There are "Agents" like The Matrix and they are pursuing you and they are not human but look human. You do live in a simulation but not technological, but Gnostic/spiritual. The whole soul trap stuff and such.TLDR: spiritual version of The Matrix. The Matrix was about all that anyway but disguised as "machines" to be easier to understand.
