It's like people who make these games are competing in whoever can make the least appealing and the least cool game possible. Some threads ago someone was posting a video of a guy who spent years of his life making a videogame about some retarded birds jumping on blocks or some shit. This is pretty much "coworker indie game dev" projects.

How would you theme an invoker type character where you have different spells you can cast based on the component abilities you cast before hand?
I want to include one but Nine and Invoker already exist so I think having another wizard in the archetype would be overdone.

I think the hunting horn is a neat implementation of the idea and I've also considered theming it around cooking with the components being ingredients.
>>
sigh... time to code some state machines
>>
>>578688632
you can just steal invoker's mechanics for your game exactly as it is, it's not a crime and valve won't sue you for that

It might pass if you make it more accurate to the real character. I looked her up and her midriff doesn't hang out, she's also flat as a board with no visible boobs outlines. I think twitter chicks will detect you're a weirdo and get offended, especially if all your art focuses on underage girls with tweaks to make them more sexual looking.

Progress on the main character. His hair doesn't seem to be shading very well. This is on Unity 6.5 URP 17.5. My todo list is currently
>improve the hair shading
>finish the texture for his arms/hands
>finish the textures and models for his guns

I've already rigged him so once that list is done I'll start animating him. I'll post 1 or 2 more pictures of him.

2d platformer was a genre born strictly from the limitations of old technologies. You simply couldn't make anything more complex and calculation-heavy. Jumping from one platform to another is just too boring. All popular "platformer" games today are only 10% platformers and 90% something else

I use AI for multiple projects including my actual job. First of all, AI is unironically retarded. Claude Opus, specifically, has negative IQ. But you seem to be retarded as well.
1. Don't talk to it like it's a human, talk to it like what it is - a machine. You have to be as precise as possible. Abstractions or "between-the-lines" logic confuses it. You need to specify every step for it: what sprite, where it is, how to search for a problem, what is the framework for solving the problem. AI is basically an idiot savant - it can calculate inverse kinematics on the fly but cannot understand basic human logic.
2. AI still pretty bad at comprehending images. Do not rely on it.
3. Claude is super jew and they like to milk money. Claude specifically really likes to talk and generate fucking books of text. You can limit it in your settings there are general instructions. You can find some templates online.
4. For anything to get done you actually have to understand what you are doing. If you don't then use it first as enhanced google and ask to research for common solutions then explain it to you.
5. If you only need help with code I would use ChatGPT Sol because it doesn't use tokens the same way Claude does. You'll have more things done, but again, only if you actually know what you are doing.

Think John Wick meets Lethal Company as a 4-player extraction co-op. You don’t play the hitman—you play the cleanup crew. A high-profile mob hit goes down in a five-star hotel, and your squad gets dropped in with mops, body bags, and industrial bleach. You have four minutes to dissolve the evidence, stage the corpses, and scrub the marble before the SWAT team breaches.

You enter 2 libraries. The first library contains a single book with all the information in, you can only ever find this book in the library and therefore have immediate access to all the data but its terse to read. The second library has many books split by topic, you can find the relevant information by going down the aisle with the correct topic. Which would you prefer to go into if you were looking for information?
Also, 7k lines of code in a single file isn't bad if that is the entirety of your game, its bad practice but the project is small enough it doesnt matter. If you think you're going to double or triple that amount of code then you definitely should be refactoring that.

As a general rule of thumb, I'd say if you have 4 or more variables and very heavy logic attached to a single domain, it's safe to refactor it.

If you have
>Actor.cs
that moves, you can refactor everything related to movement inside
>ActorMovement.cs
which Actor.cs has a reference to.

Now, if you have an AI script that tries to tell your actor to move somewhere, you can call it from inside Actor.cs, and Actor.cs daisy-chains another function call inside ActorMovement.cs.

Started rigging my character.

I have a couple of questions:

For lowpoly characters the deforming shows a lot of bad choices by blender when it comes to quads. Do you triangulate everything beforehand or maybe just certain areas, like thighs and ass?

Are 2 chain hands, having Index finger, thumb, but the rest are fused like a glove, retarded? What games actually use that?

Do I need a root bone?

What control bones are a must have? All I have so far are heels, following the tutorial, but I think I need some way for the character's upperbody to track where you aim

I just make more cuts in areas that deform, you don't need that many more, just enough to make things bend nicely. Gamers aren't going to notice something like a knee being a little smoother looking and it's not going to make your model look less low poly.

Do hands however you want.

Typically yes, is there some reason you're avoiding it?

My rigs are really simple but I only have control bones on the wrists and ankles for bipedal models that are human-like, you can do more or less if you want though.

In the past, most two-player modes required taking turns due to console limitations. Super Mario Bros. is one example of this: the player controlling Luigi had to wait for the first player to finish their turn. Do you think this type of multiplayer mode could be revived in an interesting way? For example, one player could activate mechanisms that would make the next player's level easier or harder.

If you break that script into smaller parts those objects can be re-used elsewhere much more cheaply than making a bunch of instances of your monolith that does everything. Probably not super relevant for an indie game but for stuff like concurrency (multiplayer or multi-threading) or if you have to do a ton of operations per second that adds up.
Also I find it easier to debug and add new features if I don't have to scroll through a 3K line long script to find one function. It's pretty easy to end up repeating yourself multiple times or forget to delete deprecated code if the file sizes are huge too.

Now throwing your dice at the opponent's face is part of the game.

That's an interesting idea for a friendslop game actually.
Everyone's goal is to complete the level, but you only get points if you individually are the one to complete it.
So you have this game theory calculus going on in your head about whether you should make progress or not because the level might get harder and you'll lose and someone else will capitalize on your progress after, or if you're confident you could beat the level you go for it.
In a way it combines friendslop and gambling which are the two biggest genres right now.

I took that approach with my first two games but you have to remember that you in the future might as well be a different person than you now, and you need to be able to read and understand your code 6 months or a year from now when it's not fresh in your head.
I didn't do any testing or logging and didn't adhere to any kind of standards or systems when writing code because that felt like "corporate bloat" and that bit me in the ass several times when I launched the game with some bugs and had to revisit code I wrote almost a year ago to fix them.

What kind of company type has he registered that he keeps 700k as company's assets? Why would you not file for sole proprietorship instead when being a solo indie dev? Less taxes, less paperwork, less accounting etc.
>>
>>578753441
The first game I ever programmed was an implementation of Backgammon in Python for a school project, and that's what got me hooked on game dev as opposed to regular software dev. Backgammon is surprisingly interesting due to the randomness and making an AI that plays effectively was a fun challenge as well.
After the final project we had all of our Backgammon AIs play against each other in a tournament and mine came in second to someone who trained his with ML (which the professor had explicitly banned, he was just a jeet who really wanted to win).

Registered as a Norwegian LLC. With that amount, he would automatically pay 50% tax with a sole proprietorship. With an LLC, he only pays a lower corporate tax and taxes on wages taken out
>>
>>578754137
But that money is still stuck in a vacuum until he pays out his wage, and when he does, he will then still be taxed unless he figured out some shenenigans where he can spend the LLC's money on private expenses and write it off as a business expense instead.

So we'll combine them for our opening animation we're producing for the next v3jam in October. And, we want to have your characters at our party!

HOW TO JOIN

A)Send a rigged model as a .glb (blender) file
B)Send a static PNG (transparent) of your character in some sort of standing pose, holding a drink, eating some chips, etc.
Bonus) if you dress them up in a Halloween costume or a Christmas outfit.

There's a 4 month grace period where they estimate if it counts as a full-time business or not but legally that 4 months starts from the time I start to design or plan a game for commercial release. It doesn't matter that the game doesn't exist and there are no profits. Fuck this retarded country. To release my game without getting fucked in the ass by the government I have to claim that I spend little enough time on the game that it won't be considered a full-time thing. And then I have to hope that the social workers believe it. If they don't believe it then I have to stop developing my game so that I can go back to being unemployed and not die for having no money. If they don't believe it they will actually start looking into my activities to make sure that I am not doing anything. This is so fucking retarded I can't even.

It's like this country did everything possible to prevent people from making anything of themselves. They would rather I remain a leech than try to succeed. It was a serious mistake to bring this shit up to my social worker. Now he knows. He has the power to destroy my life.

From hearing him talk in discord, he has 0 idea of what to do in the off season and wanted something to fill the void between last show and next because he won't be doing the show. Which, to be fair, other expos ride on name recognition to keep momentum in-between their yearly shows. Like you never saw E3 outside of E3 season but you knew it was coming. Maybe jams aren't the way to go, but realistically, there's not much else to do that's not just recycling old content for years on end. Nigger what are you doing? You plan the business and get all the websites, then register the company at the point you release. That way you aren't working and there's no paper trail.
>time starts from the minute you start to design or plan a game for commercial release
It really doesn't but even if it did, if you're on universal credit then all you have to say is you have no income "working" and they'll supplement it. You can always pull the "this is a skill building exercise to make me employable at a later date" line. But if you really want to fuck your social worker over if he attempts to get you off benefits say you had a relapse and can no longer work due to very poor mood and then you're on bennies again.

Sorry if there's some politically incorrect chuddy term you want to use for that. It's bullying. Osh got dominated by some guy who runs a discord full of gamedevs. Betz is an influence seeker and was wielding his power to affect someone's game. A huge achievement for him.

>It really doesn't but even if it did, if you're on universal credit then all you have to say is you have no income "working" and they'll supplement it.
We don't have universal credit. What we have necessitates being unemployed and actively searching for a job. Unless you're disabled or whatever. The thing about becoming more employable would only be valid if I release my games for free as that is not a profit seeking activity.

I'll quote the official mail he sent me after
>If you are planning to start developing a game for profit, it is important to note that business activities can be considered to have started even before the activity has been registered with the Tax Administration. It is not only the registration that is decisive, but also whether the productive or economic activity has actually started. If you start designing, programming or other development work with the aim of publishing and selling the game on, for example, Steam or another commercial service, the activity can be assessed as productive and economic activity. In this case, the unemployment office can assess that business activities have started even if you have not yet registered as an entrepreneur or in the Tax Administration's registers.

Running out of space.

I might very well be forced to do this. We will see how it goes.

>You should seriously just go and get disabled bennies for depression or something.
Getting the "unable to work" status is a lot harder. It might legit take years of doctor's appointments to get to that point. I could claim depression to get a form of sick leave but then I'd be forever stuck with that on my record and every time I'd go see the doc for something they'd prescribe more anti-depressants. I have seen the medical system destroy someone close to me doing exactly that when anti-depressants weren't the thing they needed.

>>578764306
>I think what he's trying to tell you is make it "not for profit" and then decide later to switch it over for profit.
They might demand I pay back some of the money I received if I do that. I'm not sure on the exact legals of that but student benefits are something they can demand back. Like say you're not actually studying and not getting credits they will make you repay it. If you consider that it would make sense to think that if they decide I was "self-employed" while I was supposed to be "unemployed" then they'd want the money back.

It's similar and a lot of modding involves doing some aspect of game dev or sometimes all aspects of game dev if the mod is huge.

A typical mod usually involves adding new or changed assets or code to the game, not that different from game dev. Just less involved because you aren't making an entire game, you're just changing a small part of it.

I would watch tutorials on holding objects or guns in Blender. It's similar to how you would attach clothes to a character, you're just attaching it to a bone (hand in this scenario.) The gun would have it's own rig for cocking it, removing the magazine, etc.

You would animate the gun and the character together by doing pose mode with both rigs. You can separate the assets later if you want for organization purposes though since Blender files can get too huge if you're trying to build out every single clothing asset, etc. in one file.

the chance of success as a 1MA is so low that if you're trying to be realistic, you probably shouldn't be doing it in the first place.
as for GTA, you could make GTA 1
>>
>>578776475
>make a game that you have the skill set to do
Aim a little higher than that. Otherwise you will end up making the same kind of games over and over. This causes some devs to burn out and they never recover.

for 999999 out of 1000000 games i don't seem to be the target audience. maybe that's the con of niche-deving, you get no more games that have a bit of everything for everyone, so if your niche doesn't get anything you have 0 games to play.

How come there's so few UE games that actually have a nice looking UI instead of UE Console slop interface?
>>
I'm the best developer here.
>>
>>578786751
You can literally do anything with the UE user interface designer so it's just a case of the people making the AI being gay
>>
>>578787495
I'm mostly wondering if it's problematic or something, a lot of AAA games have shit looking interfaces when they could just have their artists make something good looking that would make the game more climatic.
>>
>>578787675
I don't think so honestly, I would go more for the artists on staff don't really give a fuck and just want to meet project deadlines with a functional UI so they block out the elements and just add decoration to the elements.
If you wanted to make something look good you have to make it a tiny bit less practical, add an animation or graphic, some kind of style, that has to go up the chain to get approved and that requires meetings. So it never really happens and if you try to push it everyone just thinks you are a pain in the ass.

Your options are Godot or Unreal, unity if you are feeling risky.
Ultimately it does not matter, just pick an engine and make a game, you can always switch when you make a new game later.

maybe if you have no ideas/creativity it's because you have nothing to work with. e.g. what if you just learn more engine features or other new algorithms, implement them, see them working with some placeholder boxes and your brain gets more and more things it can combine?
also the brain might react much different to see something on screen that you made work, than just thinking about it. e.g. if you see your plane you coded flying around, your brain has much more feelings about it than just thinking about a theoretical plane you could program if you wanted to.

i yesdev'ed to day because i stopped needing a why.
although that "why" is less philosophical, but more a "what does this get me?" why.
it's a state where you don't need meaning and don't need money. you just do it.
maybe as soon as you want something, you freeze because you overanalyze how to get there, but when all you want is to start, then no perfect plan is needed.

I'm making a sequel/homage to an obscure 1993 PC-98 fantasy game and looking for someone interested in trying a track, either in an authentic PC-98/FM style or as a heavier fantasy-metal arrangement in the vein of Rainbow/Dio.

The original game was pretty sparse on music - several bosses, areas, and situations had no unique tracks, likely because of time/budget constraints - so I'm trying to create new music that could slide naturally alongside the original soundtrack without feeling out of place. I have a playable build, character/scene references, the original OST, and some heavier cover/mockup tracks if you're interested.

Original 1993 music:

>>
>>578796070
yeah making a plan could be considered yes'deving. i guess my point was more about needing a reason to even start anything.
e.g. if you believe your chance to earn money is very low and money is your goal, then you end up with "why even doing this?"
but if you need no why, you can start anyways.

this almost sounds like real freedom.

He's probably one of those coders who screams if you don't use le "good coding practices" just drop toby fox on him with his codebase. Let him seethe that code can spagetti as long as the game is liked by enough people (or a few who are willing to buy a ton of copies) then it doesn't matter if you don't code it to perfection.

During a session you still will make 10x more progress than if you'd work manually so the limits are whatever. It's also going to work when you would normally not feel like because you're tired, depressed or whatever. It's also budget-limited, not session-limited.
