But what I generally want is for these designs to represent a "Classic" era aesthetic, and then later there would be "Adventure / Modern" designs that add a bit more complexity and detail. Like, another layer to what I wanna do is like... Classic Mickey -> King Mickey, for example. Like the kind of simple rubber-hose toon design of Epic Mickey as the baseline, and then King Mickey's outfits in the Kingdom Hearts being the evolution of that or whatever. But that can only work properly if the more simple and clean, basic design is there as the foundation encapsulating the absolute "core" of the idea as much as possible without too many extra details. Like, what I love is how Sonic looks in the Adventure games with all the upgrades and stuff, but it's important to start at Classic Sonic and make sure that core design works. If that makes sense.
