Random youtube comment
>I think that AI simply has no place in next fest period. Next fest is for small indie studios to get a chance to be seen. Now AI simply buries all those indie studios by sheer volume.
When i went to check out what demos are there i was excited, cause i love indie studios, they come up with some of the coolest shit. But when i saw all that ai slop, i just said nope and left.

This situation is more grim than I realized. I thought they were tweaking next fest to improve this after previous next fests being overwhelmed with slop.
>>
>>578915203
Anti-AI autist are a hyper vocal minority, comments mean nothing.

Reality of the situation is AI is fine but just have a standard for the game itself, if a game is good the process to get there is irrelevant
>>
Some of you guys are going to have to get over your pre-conceived notions of AI. Yes using it is a skill, and it is a force multiplier. If you suck then it won't help much.

Have you seen the /v/ threads when next fest is up? They play every single game. And they are constantly commenting on how much slop there is. It's not even about being "anti-AI". You're literally drowning people with slop. Unplayable trash.

>not me though I use AI correctly
Stop getting offended when other people mention slop then? Calling everyone "anti-AI" for having an ounce of taste just proves you are part of the problem. And you can't be reasoned with.

People were offended at zero effort games back then, but there wasn't so many of them so as to actually bury decent games on the new releases section or something.

Nextfest was supposed to be a way for decent games to get noticed outside of the scramble on new release. It has been destroyed by slop.

>Indie dev here. We agree with you. A year ago we entered Next Fest with our first game. We only had 400 wishlist and doubled that leaving next fest. This time around we entered with 2400 wishlist and we only got 100 wishlist during next fest. With how fast ppl can get games out using AI now the market is just getting flooded with games even if they are not slop, its just that ppl can get games out a lot faster using AI now.

Not offended, curious, if AI itself isn't the issue whats the point of bringing it up? AI isn't going anywhere, it's pointless to moan about, instead push for the bar/standard to be allowed into the fest to be raised, that's a realistic goal with a more effective outcome.

>>
>>578918897
>if AI itself isn't the issue whats the point of bringing it up?
Because it is the tool producing the slop. People aren't creating slop themselves by hand, in some lovingly crafted way. It's AI slop.

I love to see sloppers suddenly being so touchy that we even name what you're doing. You know the bubble is popped. You know what you're doing is pathetic and that everyone sees it as trash, and you can't handle it. That's a you problem.

>You're literally drowning people with slop.
>this one anon on an obscure hatsune miku appreciation forum is the cause of thousands of games appearing on Steam
Kek. Anon shift the blame to all the gamedev youtubers promoting gamedev as some sort of lifestyle that is easy and lets you make montages of having a fun no gamedev life along with no job. Some random anon using it to help him with code is unlikely to be an actual slop maker. In fact the gamedevs you probably have mocked in the past, "friendslop makers" aren't even slop by the average /v/ user. It's the clearly obvious slop they're complaining about, probably even the low effort/low skill non-slop stuff. Nonetheless combined with the youtube thing, AI has only given a lot more people the idea they too can gamedev. I really need to succeed before it's too late.

Aaaaaaaaa so much work now. It feels like a lot of stuff is suddenly needed.
>work on System A
>need to work on System B so System A can...
>need to work on System C so System B can...
>need to work on System D so System A can...
>need to work on new System E so System B no longer relies on a manual activation...
Etc.

Before any of you say it's too interdependent. This is a lot of stuff where I did shortcuts like
>key press activates this (instead of automatic handling)
>this system updates certain data to circumvent needing a dedicated script for it
Stuff like that. What is this? Is my games code side of things actually reaching the end goal? So much stuff just being polished up and automated so it works as intended yet it's requiring me to jump around a lot. On and off work today, estimated at about 4 hours, in the last 7 hours. It's nice that the game is coming along but this is quite frustrating levels of work. I don't even have the finalized art in the game, I went in with the mindset of just setting up the entirety of the code with placeholder art in place. All so I didn't get trapped into art rework after rework (plus I had no idea what style I wanted, which I now do).
>>
>>578923875
I think it's always like that in games and you just get used to it. I forgot what it's like to work on simple applications anymore. The mental map I have of my game systems is extremely complex. It makes you admire your own brain.

You gotta be genuine 50 IQ to want a game that plays itself. I can understand the argument for auto-battlers when you make decisions between each battle but I don't think that's what you meant. A game where you can just turn on auto-play has gotta be the worst thing invented in gaming. It is something mobile shitters love and they have brain damage.

>>578893379
>maybe i should switch my question from "what does the world need that doesnt exist yet?" to "what does the world need more from".
>but what does "more" mean?
There are genres that aren't getting the love they deserve. With how the meta changes some things fall out of favor and get "forgotten" by developers. A good example would be co-op games that aren't
>open world craft build survival
>zombie survival
>diablolike
>monster hunter
>friendslop
>roguelite
There's a lot of those but there's very few other types of co-op games. One more specific niche in there is the lobby-based co-op action RPG. There's diablolikes and Monster Hunter but there's almost no other options. What if you don't want MH or a diablolike. What if you wanted something more like Dragon Nest or Phantasy Star Online. Everything that's sorta like that is a roguelite. If you don't want to play a roguelite well you're basically forced to go play those old games because there are no new games like that.

Now I'm not saying you should make a game like that. I'm saying that you should be looking for underserved niches like that and find something that is a good fit for you to be making.

This is why the Steam Direct fee needs to be raised. Make it unsustainable for sloppers to spam their slop on Steam. 100 is too low with how easy AI has made it to make total shit tier games that don't belong on Steam.
>>
>>578933974
Or they could take some of their massive fucking cut to apply some actual standards.
>>
>>578934098
How would they apply standards? Once again let random Steam employees decide if your game is allowed on Steam or not like in the Greenlight days?

Raising the fee instantly cuts out the sloppers because they can't afford to do 12 slops a year if the fee is $1000. They will be forced to put more effort into their games if they want their money back. And anyone with a good game can put together 1k to pay the fee and easily recoup it with sales afterwards. How is that not the perfect solution to the problem.

This hard. Thankfully, I've decided I wanted to do this early in the project so it's not a major refactor.

This is just the setup for a lot of the complications I want to add.
Combat is turn-based but I don't want combat actions to block the UI and I want to be able to have items and status effects that trigger off of some actions. Effects like "when you attack, take 3 damage back". End goal is to break down every action a player or the enemy could take in a turn into an entry in this queue.

That would mean you get paid 4k a month which is not even close to true for most people. Either way I fail to see how that has to do with what I said. Let's say sloppers make 4k a month. Do you think those sloppers would spend a quarter of their paycheck every month to put slop on Steam. Maybe a couple times but after those didn't pay it back? Probably not. Then there's the fact that most sloppers are turdies who aren't making anywhere close to 4k and simply could not afford to do it.

What if instead of Steam Direct or Greenlight we had Steam Kickstart. Similar to Greenlight, Steam users can vote but they vote with their wallet. The developers set the release price for the game and a game needs to reach 1000 pre-orders from users to get onto Steam. Those users then get the game on launch and the game has to release at that same price and the developers are guaranteed 1000 sales on day 1. Maybe you could even give the voters a 20% discount or something.

I had the displeasure of watching a dumb zoomer try to prompt, and it was awful. His requests didn't really make sense because he doesn't really know how computers work, and the AI just gave him some bullshit that did something, but not what he wanted it to do, and he was unable to express to the LLM what he really wanted.

Programming is moreso of a way of thinking. Programming using AI is still programming. Learning how to get the AI to make the things you want really isn't much easier than learning how to program yourself. It's basically the same thing. One you're programming using a programming language and the other, you're programming using English.

High quality 2d art, especially if specialized in marketing materials and capable of different styles. Capsule art for example. Character design is also highly desirable because AI makes shit tier designs. As is scene composition skill.

They're roughly the same. The biggest advantage Unity has is just the asset store. If you plan to buy and use lots of assets, definitely go for Unity. Generally, experienced software engineers enjoy Godot far more, since it better follows popular software conventions, whereas Unity is more "enterprise" meaning it's its own thing that organizations are expected the specifically train for.

Does it make sense to keep time of a game session as a stat and keep it in a list/dictionary and add deltatime to it every frame. Because I want to be able to use it for achievements or checking session end conditions. I will create random conditions set random values for randomly generated challenges. Something like:

enum FloatStatId { SessionTime, ...}

GameCondition { IntStat intStatId; FloatStat floatstatId; float value, ComparisonType comparison; //lesser, equal, bigger}

struct FloatStat {
FloatStatId id;
float value; }

List<FloatStat> floatStats;

Every frame it will go through the list, find entry for SessionTime stat, and add the Time.deltaTime to it. Is this a plausible way of doing it? It seems much less efficient than just using float sessionTime, but also I guess I need it for the functionalities I want. Is it bad practice or am I overthinking it?
>>
>>578958764
You can do it and theres no problem
Personally I'd store the time at session start and calculate (current time-start time) only when I needed to check it instead of accumulating it every frame

>calculate (current time-start time) only when I needed
I see, but the code will go through list of conditions, and will check the values blindly. So the session time value has to already be there.
But I realized one thing. I can separate checking time related stats (session time, round time, shot time) and score related stats. Time gets updated every frame. But the other stats are not. Things like shot made, shot scored will only change depending on the player or physics. And I can trigger an event as OnStatsUpdated. For time stat I can go through the list conditions and IF condition stat id is time related I can check it, if not no need to check score, shot count etc.

>>578959424
I think I realized the difference between normal stats and time related (frame perfect) stats as in my reply above. You were referring to this right?

>>578959578
How about an array? I will still be iterating through it and check if stats id's are equal and then check float/int values. Would it be okay? Oh also I'm using unity/c# so I assumed List had it's tricks/optimizations behind the scenes for memory allocation things.

I think it depends on the goal. Big studios usually rely on building hype for a large release, so they might not want to release a demo too soon. But smaller studios and indies might have the goal of building up a following first, so early demos to get people interested in the core concept is a better idea. Kinda just depends on marketing goals and developer goals.

Shadowdropping something like Beyonce feels much cooler than shilling and building hype. Of course it's better with a huge fanbase, but even with a fanbase of few hundred it would feel cooler than begging them to like, wishlist, subscribe, share, rexeet...
Imagine if Eric Barone didn't tell anybody anything about the Haunted Chocolatier and just released it one day. He could do it and it wouldn't matter.
For games I can only remember Fallout Shelter being released the same day it was announced (along with Fallout 4) and the audience went wild and it was a mobile game that was part of the marketing budget.

It does have its tricks but that only goes so far. the problem is that a list/dictionary is essentially just a dynamic array, meaning that the memory can become broken up. its almost always better to use a larger than necessary array then a list.
if 0 represents the list, and 1 represents the other data, you don't ever want it to look like this -
000001110000000011111000000
it should always look like
00000000001111111111

because reading the list and the finding where the list ends/resumes is what is slow for the compootah

>>578959795
I think it depends on the scope of the project. Small scoped games should no longer be demo'd early. AI makes them too easy to steal. If you think you really got something with a small game I think the timeline leading up to release should be something like
>month or two before next fest
>steam page reveal with demo
>initial shill campaign gathering wishlists and testing for demo
>participate in next fest
>prepare to launch a month or two after next fest
Problem is the AI slop flooding of next fest and how do you get enough wishlists. It's going to be difficult. This is the shit tier state of gaming right now.

For a game that can't be so easily copied you can take the itch early demo path and I think you can even have an early demo on Steam. There's some of that losing hype danger but if you keep updating the demo as you go it could help bring in more eyes on it and then hopefully by the time you're ready for next fest you'll have a solid wishlist count to help with visibility.

I don't think you should be taking 2+ years on a project unless you have released multiple games.

It really wasn't a very realistic problem until recently. Before youtube grifters popularized the idea of being a gamedev and AI made it possible for more people to make games almost everyone who made games did so because they had ideas of their own and weren't interested in stealing. Or if they were stealing it was more that they were making something based off a game they loved. Now an increasing amount of devs are in it to get rich and they are desperate because they are hacks with no proper skills of their own they will copy anything that looks like it could do well. Most of them will be copying new successes but some are looking to snipe potential games before they release.

Is that why there are a billion "needle in a haystack" games coming out now?
On the one hand I think it's a scummy practice and these games don't look fun.

The motivation and optimism hits me like a truck, right when I should go to bed. I feel invincible, almost euphoric. If I felt that way during the day I would make insane progress and more importantly, be happy, but sadly, it's almost the exact opposite.
Thankfully (?) I managed to get myself to not give in and to go to sleep at relatively normal hours. Before, the lack of sleep would halve my IQ and later in the day I'd have about an hour where I would feel intensely physically ill and cold barely not fall asleep.
>>
>>578966134
You can feel that way during the day, you just have to train yourself to. Pick a time that you're free almost every day and just start working on your game at that time every day. At first you might not be getting much done but eventually your brain will start getting into "dev mode" at that time and it will be easy to get shit done during the day.

The demonday streamers probably go through hundreds of games in a short amount of time and can't play them for very long, if they did the tutorials of every single game they'd just be jumping from one tutorial to another, never actually playing any game. Yeah it's a simple platformer. I'm going to try a "teaching without telling" tutorial then. I'll just force the player to engage with all of the major mechanics in a retard-proof way with no text, like pic related. I'll put a shortcut/speedrun route that only people who are good at the game can use.
>>
>>578973054
There are some good games that would be unplayable without a tutorial because they're complicated enough that you can't just figure it out on your own.
Older games generally don't have a tutorial at all or have just a sentence or two because the player only needs to press 2 buttons to play something like Pong.

> a game about sandboarding
>>
>>578952147
Hmm okay I can see that. I never got to that point in the last few games I worked on. It was almost always just the slog of boring tedious unfun stuff. Any fun stuff was mixed in with so much unfun stuff to do that I was unable to enjoy it.
>time to make characters or enemies
>suck at art too much
>turns into a painstaking process
>end up redoing art one too many times in one game
Game went from very ugly looking to subpar. It's not fun when that's the case. It was made worse because I had so many things to do that I was mostly just jumping between unfun stuff. So even if I had something easier just knowing I had more unfun stuff was quite dismaying. It'd be funner if I was actually good at art. The code stuff sucks regardless, making that foundation is not fun at all. So much work yet on the visual end it is very little.
>do all this effort and set up all this code to....

This isn't actually as bad as you guys think it is if you play it out properly. Just continue executing your idea and make sure that you make your game as polished and bugfree as possible while attempting to address negative reviews of the game you're now incidentally copying, then make sure you also have a lower price tag. That way, people who finish playing the better game and are looking for more, may give your game a chance.

AI "democratizing" art means it inherents the flaws of democracy, wherein people who have no idea or no real interest in creating something than, and they fail to see the issues with their creation over the mere fact that they "could create something," like a kid throwing random food together on a plate and calling it "cooking."

The question is, how are standards set? In a world full of fast food restaurants that cattle are content eating at, is having a better sense of taste now just for a pretentious minority? What is the filter? Gamejams with paid for tickets to participate in? Presentation that if doesn't immediately adhere to rules is immediately discarded?

Pseudoephedrine, you find it in cold medicine. It's basically kind of like the feeling of anxiety you feel when you're one day away from a deadline or something like that. The advantage is that you can function better, the disadvantage is that you're wired and freaked the fuck out, you're feeling a constant anxiety that doesn't really go away. You can distract yourself from most of the anxiety by doing something, but it still interferes a bit with your work. It can be useful if used sparingly, it's definitely way better than just not doing something you should really have done.
>>
>>578990292
You should never take complaints at face value. Use your brain. Failings of another game can let you know what to be aware of or what should get special consideration.

I don't recommend seeking a publisher. I have worked with large publishers before and whatever they can do for you isn't worth the cut they take, unless your game is going to flop and the majority of money you get comes from the publisher.

If you have a bunch of publishers reaching out to you because your game is so amazing or something, ignore it. The 15-35% they take is not worth whatever they are offering.
>>

I would consider a publisher if their payout is big enough to fund 2 years of development. Still depending on their cut and my game's wishlist progress though.

Getting paid for two years of development isn't worth potentially losing hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars on a successful game. They offer you nothing besides a little chump change, marketing, maybe translations, or console ports.

These are all things a successful game would have paid for by itself anyway or you didn't need to begin with. It's only worth it if your game is absolutely going to flop and you aren't making any money to begin with.

There's no point arguing with someone like this, for one thing they aren't going to be making a videogame anyway. People who actually make videogames care enough about their game to show it to people and do some basic marketing. Other people hate the idea of having to do something besides make a game and click publish, but really they are never going to make it that far anyway. They will argue with you forever that if they did make a game, they wouldn't have to market it.

>Gildoria uses AI-assisted tools in parts of its development: some UI icons were made with AI image generation, the in-game text was translated with AI translation tools. All of it was reviewed and edited by the developer. 3D art, level design, game design and codes are human-made or licensed. No content is generated by AI while the game runs.

Yes, a gamedev is a person who makes and ships a game, how they do that is completely irrelevant. Kojima is regarded as one of the best game developers in the industry - yet he has not written a single line of code, has not composed any song, nor has created any art.

lmao I had to pay for literally everything it was not free by any means
She would accuse me of cheating on her basically every day
She had infinite male friends she would snapchat constantly but God forbid I so much as email a female coworker
The straw that broke the camel's back was her accusing me of lying to her all the time, saying she could no longer trust me, and asking me if I had schizophrenia because a bottle of laundry detergent moved about a foot while on top of a running, vibrating laundry machine.
She also tried my games and said they were all stupid and a waste of my time, so she probably wouldn't have posted them anyway. She never posted anything about me at all on her accounts because she had to "maintain the illusion she was single for marketing" even though she had like 5 male followers total.

People are generally very selfish and unenlightened.

They see something they can relate to and cheer for it, hoping they'll get there themselves.
A struggling gamedev getting the sales that he deserves. I want that to happen to me!

But now that he's successful, your sympathy dries up and it's harder to relate, so the primal urge to see your competition fail takes over and starts crabbing.

My guess would be:
>"bullet heaven" [vampire survivors]
>friendslop
>"numbers go up" gambling type game
>horror or creepy game
>increment slop

Bonus for
>"organizing game"

To every indie dev checking other people’s wishlist numbers:

Stop.

That’s not your scoreboard.

Someone else’s 10K wishlists doesn’t mean your game is worse.
It just means they started showing it earlier.
Your only job right now is simple:

Make something worth wishing for.

Keep building.
Keep improving.
Keep going—even when nobody is watching.

The numbers come after the game exists.

I'm starting to notice this myself. Sol and Fable are both great at different things and cover each other's weaknesses well.

There needs to be a word for the new emotion, the mixture of rage and disappointment of realizing something you’re reading is LLM generated in a context where you didn’t prompt it.
