That combined with weird route pushing us toward and ending while ch 5 seemed to stall us it created a bit of a weird route craze. In retrospect he was evidently excited about the flowers and maybe believed they'd be a huge hit, like a "this fandom will never be the same" level hit. I think he was really believing his own hype during the rollout.
I've posted about this before but I think the chapter 5 rollout had Expectations Management issues in several ways. Just one example to save time, was Toby posting the beta version of Sunset of the Seven Suns. The piano soundfont made it feel like a huge fucking deal, a revelatory track like "Undertale" was. It ended up being an overworld theme with a corny Japanese soundfont.
The "no spoilers!" talk even had people speculating that a lot of the Japanese stuff was a fakeout somehow, because otherwise nobody could really justify why Asgore's dark world was Japanese. Failing that, people got excited that we'd get to confront Carol, since Noelle has characterized the Holidays as having a "ninja" family fighting style, + Carol wielding a katana. Instead she never appears in the chapter.
Toby did say "one last adventure before the dark clouds on the horizon", so there was that. But people didn't expect that to mean there'd be outright none of the creepy areas like digital or bit roots or the carnival or the weird parts of the church. Chapter 5 did not give a fuck about feeding that part of the fandom whatsoever. And then there's Pink, who it's fine if you like, but does it feel like an encounter that is honoring the spot it's received in the context of following up Spamton, Eram, and Gerson?
And oh yeah, Gerson. Who said the field of pink and gold would be charred in an inferno of jealousy.
Basically people thought or hoped that something would HAPPEN by the end of chapter 5, and essentially it doesn't. And Toby could have done more to set people's expectations that things would not happen.
He seems to have learned his lesson somewhat because a lot of the latest newsletter was dedicated to very direct expectations management for chapter 6.

Toby said in the prerelease newsletter that it'd feel a bit weird but it'd make sense when all of deltarune was out. He knew reception wouldn't be amazing. I think he got a little pushback internally and while I did truly love chapter 5, it's probably good to raise concerns. It'll just make chapter 6 and 7 better.

It shouldn't be sexual abuse if we're being honest with ourselves, but I would agree that there should be something interesting between Kris and Dess if DessKnight is true.
I like the idea of Dess giving Kris the knife, although it becomes kinda inexplicable in the context of Dess always whacking Kris to protect Noelle.
After ch5 the ideas for the connection between Kris and Dess got harder for me to believe in which has shifted me slightly toward Asriel or Rudy Knight.
I used to think Kris & Dess had some kind of pseudo sibling or mentor relationship but I'm a lot less confident in that now. If there is something between them then currently I feel like it was an unrequited admiration or fascination from Kris toward Dess. EG I used to think maybe Dess had taught Kris piano. Now I think it's more likely that Kris was motivated to learn piano to be more like Dess or to impress her, whereas Dess was not interested in giving Kris lessons. Hence Kris looking up tutorials on their computer.

There's not much fuel to this, unfortunately. The only thing going for it is Kris's love for music which Dess shared, and Noelle wondering if Kris ever thought about her while playing the piano. That has always stuck with me for some reason, what if Kris was thinking about Dess instead of Noelle? Still, I don't think it's possible. Kris was jealous of Dess and Asriel when they rode the ferris wheel together and tried to throw dirt at her, so I don't think they had anything weird going on. Plus, there's no way Toby Fox would add a pedophile character to his game.

I liked pretty much everything about 5 except for the Suselleslop (which was easy to ignore for the most part after the Light World segment) and how Asgore spent so much time being built up only for his big scene to be nothing but vagueposting. It served its purpose as the last-happy-adventure chapter pretty well outside of those things, which are relatively small problems in the grand scheme of it all.

I think the problem is that some people think they still love a thing and they just hate it's flaws when in reality they've crossed a threshold, and they're more upset thinking about it than they are happy.
