>>579543518Here's my take as a JOP reflecting on whether i would have chose to spend X years learning Japanese if I was facing that choice now with MTL at its current level.The most frank and widely applicable analysis is that there are still benefits to learning Japanese, but substantially fewer benefits overall. Back in the day it was hugely beneficial because you would get to read things you otherwise couldn't have, and in fact I learned it myself because I was so desperate to read some nukige. But nowadays it's getting pretty close to that not being a factor. You can read, and have a pretty good experience reading, almost anything without learning Japanese. Censorship from models and perhaps some other factors don't make it so clear-cut, but in general there will be far fewer doors opened and anyone ignoring that is coping.So what about the remaining benefits? It's definitely true that learning Japanese will still have some benefits: it exercises the mind, you will have a better experience in general due to reading the actual prose, comprehension aside you don't have to worry a translator committing about errors or fuckups, etc. It's definitely beneficial. But it's just way less beneficial, and I think many espouses those benefits are don't realize how little they believe it. How motivating, really, will something abstract like "reading the author's true voice" really be to a random given person? Will comparatively slight benefits like that really motivate someone to spend literally thousands of hours of their life studying? To some, it will be, but I think most will just say that because they like the sound of it but then give up learning.My conclusion is this: Learning Japanese is still worthwhile for very serious enthusiasts. In the past it was worthwhile honestly to maybe even most people, there was a lot of benefit to get out of it, but now it's more slim and only the truly dedicated will get enough out of it for it to be worthwhile.

Since they will get massive exposure to Japanese by listening to them all day, and machine translation will NOT enable them to listen to their vtumor of choice easily... and even when live-translation gets better it will still be worse than just listening. To be honest, the raw Sol output is better than even most human editors can really manage, at least those working in the VN scene. It is overall already very smooth to read. A really skilled editor could shape up a lot of the text, but editors aren't magic, just like translators not all are that great and there are few exceptional ones.

Amakano 3 Shion route done. But I ctrl'd whenever I got bored after the dating started, so it's only a half-hearted completion... no VNDB vote for this one.Indeed, the Sol patch out for this is very solid. It has some issues which I will get into for completeness (as in to not come off as if I'm blind to its faults), but I had absolutely no problems reading this from start to finish. I would describe myself as someone very sensitive to bad prose in English; I'd say about 9 out of 10 translations of anything (not just J->E) are too clumsy for me to read comfortably, and it's pretty common for me to upon up some English-original webnovel and instantly drop it after one chapter due to finding the text so amateurish that it ends up being uncomfortable to read. Whatever the truth may be, I consider myself to have high standards for prose. (This is not to say I always write with high standards.)And yet I read this unedited, un-proofread Amakano 3 route from start to finish (minus the CTRLing) no issue. There were parts with strained grammar, to be sure, particularly when the AI was trying too hard to keep some Japanese SOV styling or a series of idioms that end up way wordier in English, but overall it was completely smooth. There was a nice flow between lines (i.e. it didn't feel like each line was TL'd individually, a common problem for human TLers even), the banter was brisk, it didn't feel LLMy, grammar was always tight, complex ideas were expressed in brisk ways... I would genuinely put it among my top 10% or maybe even 5% of English translations I've read for any VN, ever. It feels to me it will be genuinely difficult for Shiravune's TL to be better than this. I even felt a little humbled by just how much the MTL strove to preserve some elements of the Japanese styling - some stuff like Kanon's dragging intonation and musical symbols feel like stuff I would have cut down over time to avoid repetition-induced burnout but the MTL effectively kept them.

But that is really hard for me to imagine when each Amakano 3 character has such a different voice already. It seems a little more likely that I would just get sick of reading such constantly smooth, flowing prose all the time somehow, and end up missing the weird clunky broken0ness of unskilled human TLs, though I hope I wouldn't.Anyway with that said I will now go over the problems I noted. Since it seems like a few people confuse praise with calling something perfect, I'll reinforce that this was not a flawless experience, just a strong one. I'm used to experiencing flaws in translations, so the relative infrequency and low impact of the issues I encountered meant it didn't damage my experience overall in comparison to the rock-solid prose and high accuracy. Overall it would require little work for a proofreader to fix all of the below, so I don't weight the issues that seriously - they aren't damning.

For example, the word for "selfie" (自撮り) is a homonym for a kind of chicken (地鶏). The translation, instead of making a new joke or somehting, just has a character go "Wait, why are we talking about chickens?" "We're talking about selfies... oh, did you mean jidori chicken?" and then the script moves on. This happened about 5 times by my count. None made sense or were funny, of course. Probably the biggest problem TL-wise. 2) It kept translating あつい as hot, which led to some awkward moments when Shion kept calling people getting too close to her as "hot" (temperature), aka she calls her sister hot all the time.3) At some point sound effects broke down and kissing had a lot of "lero lero rero" in it.4) Sometimes it failed to consistently repeat a word when it is being referenced later, like someone says "Wow" and the next line is "Why did you say woah?" (aka Wow got turned into Woah and it sticks out). I counted 3 times for this one.5) Some japanese concepts like reader model and onsen komachi aren't translated. I honestly didn't mind this since the TL made it easy to intuit from context or google if you are unfamiliar. 6) some other minor ones, like pretending the etymology for Japanese words applies to the English TL of them

Though I'd lean closer to 5% then 10%. It just reads so incredibly well I feel it will take some time to adjust back to the more amateurishly written translations VN's normally get. The biggest issue as you've pointed out that these AI guys currently have is just not playtesting their shit. Thankfully MAO has released a few patches and addressed issues I've found (although Chapter names are still untranslated lol).
