mostly a day for code jannying, but i implemented a different tire model thats slightly less likely to explode at low speeds, very basic anti roll bar (visible as the tiny black bar coming from the wheels), ackermann steering and differentials that properly route torque to all four wheels

theres still a metric ton of bugs, but we ball

Rather than trying to fix things in screen space, you should just add more lights to the scene (e.g. some warm torches against a cold moonlight). The main advantage of UE is how cheap lights are. Also, don't forget to enable HDR if you haven't.

AO and some GI solution (I guess for UE, it's Lumen?) will darken up the areas that should be dark. Just make sure there's things in the scene that cast shadows, like trees.
>>
>>579595926
also I saw you mentioned the chromatic aberration causing blur? are you sure its that and not my depth of field shader? its not real lens based its just a blur based on the distance a ray cast from the camera is hitting. I dont quite have it dialed in yet

My mgslike plot needs refinement. Shadow Moses had the threat of nukes to stop the military from just marching in and slaughtering them. The twist was that Snake was needed to activate the nukes.

I don't have nukes, but I do have a big global threat and a twist, the problem is that it is simply not big enough to hold back the military. I mean nothing can beat nukes.

What if they had WIP hostages, POWs, maybe damaging information, and so on? Would that feel good enough to at least hold them back? Or maybe have it all happen in such a short time the military had no time to react?

This game falls within Steam’s recommendation range.
They also have a Discord server with 500 members.

>Jumpscares
>Bare bones
>All music/SFX must be from people who've already died
>revive an out of copyright (dead) IP
>Cliche messages (the real monster is capitalism, etc)
>Candy as a collectible (currency, health, ammo, etc)
>Creepypasta cliches (bleeding eyes, hyperrealism etc)
>Cursed art style
>Sexy costumes
>every mundane action can be charged by holding the key/button for it
>guns shoot backwards so you must face away from your enemies to shoot them
>Riddles
>Haunted inanimate objects
>Setting not fit for horror
>Sacrifice mechanics
>Sequel baiting
>Main antagonist constantly references pop-culture
>Red herring cultists/monsters/characters

we'll see you there.

dunno where you live but here life is not a tv show or doomer slop fantasy. it's just normal people who are chill. i feel like it's all just socialists propaganda constantly trying to make you feel like the world is shit and we need more socialism. when in reality a minimum wage job is easy money in a chill environment. the only stressed people i see are people who want to earn more money per hour, cause they have to go extra miles and compete with co-workers.

US, every job I've worked has had high school level drama. Min wage or better paid. Not saying you have to care about it obviously or involve yourself, but most adults are emotionally teenagers.
>>
>>579615901
actually i have a tablet, i just don't like drawing. i'm not allergic to drawing, but i don't even know what to draw. and also drawing "clean" seems like much more effort than drawing for fun. also if i do this to make a game, isn't it a useless skill anyways? cause to really make a game you don't just need drawing, you need to draw modular characters, you need to draw animations, you need to draw the same thing from many different angles. all that shit would take so much time to master. i could only enjoy someone going through all of that if they really enjoy the activity of drawing.

i enjoy typing, so for me its programming.

Just draw for fun. You don't have to be skilled in art to be successful in gaming anyway, but it still helps if it's your own art. Horsey Game looks like shit/unskilled art but did pretty well.
>>
>>579614972
Waging would be fine if you could do like 10-15 hours a week and make enough to live on that but actual minimum wage is 8-16 hours a day to barely make do.

>what's the low ambition version of gamedev?
Cloning small games like you're a one-man sweatshop. 2-6 releases per year. You gotta be fast on your deving though. Else you can't quickly clone whatever new hits that hit the market.
>>
>>579616867
Don't count on it staying that way. Eventually you'll get some new hire that brings the drama or problems. I think the worst people to work with are the ones who hardly work and cause tons of problems for everyone else.

Most of what you're doing in 3D can be skipped or it takes no time, you can model from a one angle reference easily. You don't need to paint base colors. Fixing normals is one click. Set up reference is like 2 clicks. Unwrapping and fixing texels can be handled by plugins without you doing anything besides a couple clicks, will be packed in like one click.

3D is
>model (fast)
>rig (fast)
>animate (infinitely easier and faster than 2D, and looks better unless you are a master at 2D animation)
>texture (slow, similar to just drawing something)

2D
>draw (slow)
>animate (super slow and hard to make look good)
>draw and animate from many different angles unless you're going for shit art (super duper slow)

True, I was going for customization in my game so trying to pass with just one angle and stiff sprites won't cut it for the audience I'm aiming for.

I don't think 3D is a huge jump from 2D aside from learning new tools. Learning to draw well can take years, learning Blender and texturing is like ~1 year. Plus you can skip over a lot of texturing with photo bashing or whatever.

/AGDG/ - Steam Event Submissions Are Open!

We're hosting and curating a Steam event for games made by (you). It's taking place later this year, and sign-ups are now open! So far we've had 9 people sign up and we want to get many more!

The v3 event was a highlight for many devs, so definitely consider signing up for this: https://forms.gle/udv759Zeqp5weGw16

How exactly is such an event going to be worth anything with a community as small as this, and with the only information about it being contained in this google form and in the posts you've left in this and the previous thread? Seems utterly fucking pointless, no chance in hell Valve is ever going to do anything for this "fest" or for anyone in it. Also, allowing submissions only for a week, 3 months in advance of the actual event seems like self-sabotage to such an extent, it almost makes me wonder whether this is something malicious.

can someone explain to me like i'm a retard, why can't i calculate point distance on a curve(specifically, unity's spline), using 2 T values and total distance of the curve?
for example, t1 is 0.1. t2 is 0.2. total curve length is 100. then, real world distance between 0.1 and 0.2 should be 10, correct?
supposedly that's only true for a curve that's been "arc-length normalized" but i don't understand this at all
>>
>>579624770
>"arc-length normalized"
Basically means that's only true for constant curvature, like a circle.
For something where the curvature changes with length this becomes a harder problem.
Your intuition is correct but you'd have to do a line integral rather than just use the arc length formula.
Not super familiar with Unity so I can't help you there but I could try to draw a diagram if that would help lol

>>
>>579625032
well i'd appreciate a ELI5 explanation, really. i understand that a bezier curve is calculated mathematically, but i don't understand the math reason for this.
if i have a 10 meter straight wire, and i'm at 0.5 of the wire, i'm 5 meters from the start of the wire, correct?
if i have a 10 meter wire, and i bend it in whatever shapes, and i'm at 0.5 of the wire, i'm 5 meters from the start of the wire, correct?
i know curves aren't real world wires but i'm simply to stupid to understand it any other way.

a bezier curve is a collection of segments. each segment has 2-4 points (linear 2, quadratic 3, cubic 4). the first and last point are the start and end position, the other 2 points define the curve. you can then pass in t between 0.0-1.0 to get the given point at the given t value.
when 2 segments influence each other like in photoshop, then it's because they manually adjust the points of the neighbor segments to align the angles.

yes, however I was answering the question, bezier curves don't work like wire, they are different from where the points are moved
to sample the distance, I would simply check the location of every 1/10th of the startpoint -> destination point and then sample the distance of those points, then use the sum

The "line integral" basically refers to doing what >>579626178 said where you divide the line into small enough segments that each segment has constant curvature and its length can be calculated. Depending on the line this can be approximated with a sum of discrete measurable parts, though sometimes the sliver of the line with constant curvature is infinitesimally small so you use an integral.
See pic related, sorry my handwriting is ass and I'm simplifying a lot. I don't use Unity so idk what exact functions to call to do this but you can't use the regular arc length formula for lines with arbitrary curvature.
>>
>>579627161
you are not at half length at 0.5
you cannot calculate the length of a bezier curve sadly, unless you sample at intervals and sum up the distances between the sampled points.
you only get a position/point at 0.5, but it's not at "half length of the curve", it's at "half interval of the curve".
i think i've seen an absurdly massive formula on stackoverflow to calculate the length of a bezier cruve but i don't even know if it works.

Sorry uploaded it sideways.
Bezier curves are defined with formulas that define the curvature for each segment (quadratic, cubic, exponential, etc), so if you know the bounds of where each formula applies (your T values) you can sum up the length of each one. If those bounds or the formulas are unknown I don't really know if you can get the length without doing some kind of approximate Riemann sum type math.

i don't know what unity does, but i'd 99% guess that yes, it actually calculates it from adding segments. (which is what people also recommend on stackoverflow etc.)

>Any idea you can come up with for anything has almost certainly been tried before in some form
Yeah if you're being obtusely reductionist and abstract all ideas into "you do stuff".
There was no Getting Over It before Getting Over It. Obviously there were climbing games, there were "awkward control" games and games with narrative, but no game with the exact combination of concepts such as Getting Over It.
Look at Minecraft, Lego existed for decades, and the voxel technology was taken from Infiniminer, yet it still ended up being the first sandbox Lego game you can play on PC. Outer Wilds, there's barely any game out there like it, even though there are games with timeloops and space exploration separately.
There ARE original ideas. You're just trying to cope with your own lack of creativity by saying that orange is obviously not a new color, just a red and yellow ripoff.

"The length of a Bézier curve segment cannot be expressed with a simple formula, but it can be approximated using numerical methods. Typically, the length is calculated by evaluating the curve at multiple points and summing the distances between these points."

even sts would be nowhere without marketing
>>
What if I just took all of "my" totally non-derivative ideas and shoved them into one game? The control scheme and art might keep changing but games like Roblox show that it's not a problem.
>>
>>579629727
I'll give you a simple example. Draw a semicircle with vertices A and B.
The shortest path from A to B is the diameter of the circle, D, and the path that follows the arc of the circle, S, is pi*D/2, (half the total circumference, since it's a semicircle).
S > D. If you took the curved line S and straightened it, it would certainly be longer.
How do you define half the length of the semi circle?
Half of S? Half of D? The two numbers aren't the same. Which one you use depends on what your needs are. CalculateLength() appears to give you S. If you want D just use the standard formula for the distance between two points, which is much simpler.
>>
Make something that you want to play, and your game will sell itself.
>>
>>579629606
What I'm saying is those are just older ideas repackaged in a new way.
Notch actually was very open about the development of Minecraft and posted early videos about it that people dismissed as a knock off of some other game.
I'm not trying to cope with anything, you're just too young to know this and haven't been kicked in the balls enough times by life to be jaded like me.

they had to relyo n marketing
>>
>>579631135
Am I supposed to know what sts is?
>>
>>579630251
>>579630379
okay thanks i think i get it
in that video, the curve's T 0.5 (or rather Q 0.5) is when both of those lerp points are at 0.5
but that's not equal to the length of the curve, i see it now, when i visually saw those lerp points moving, i think i understood it.
so basically a bezier curve is a lerp of 2 lerps of 3 lerps
>>
>>579631213
Do you even play games?
>>
If you just make a good game the invisible hand of the algorithm will put your game in front of everyone who needs to see it.
>>
>>579631405
I accept your concession.
>>
>>579631276
exactly. as i said, the biggest problem with bezier is that you cannot get the length easily. you have to sample at specific intervals and add up the point distances together.
but when you actually render a bezier curve, you usually do that by sampling points at intervals too, and building a "line-mesh". so you can still get the 100% correct length of those connected lines.
unity's spline tool probably offers you a setting for that precision/nr of samples.
>>
>>579631135
What marketing did they rely on and how large were they before that marketing?
>>
>>579631276
Glad I could help, like I said I'm a student so I'm still just learning some of this stuff myself. Explaining it to someone else is helping me learn it too.

it doesn't, at least i don't see any setting that does

fyi, i checked what CalculateLength() does, and it creates something called NativeSpline, and then gets the length of that
and it does that in it's constructor method, i put it here just fyi https://pastebin.com/e4jmcGqR, https://pastebin.com/D3nBkVHB. i think it does what you said it does, chops the curve portion into 30 parts and calculates the distances on those

I believe it for games on our level to some extent. Like most would be happy with 100k+ sales. If you can't get that with a great game, either a great demo, and great art and just basic posts across instagram, x, tiktok, I feel like marketing won't help you. It just means nobody cares about your game. Like it would help, but what would a streamer playing a terrible game even do? What would ads do if your game looks stupid and has no content? Many games here got pretty big because they looked cool or had a great demo and sold themselves.

I just ran into a legit amazing untapped gold mine of an idea but it's autismo on the level of trains (but it's not about trains at all) so it might not be as good as I think it might be, but it's up there with Beethoven as a timeless cult classic type of game and endures the winds of change like cats on the internet. I'm amazed that it hasn't been done before. I can't, no, I wont say what it is and I have no interest in developing it myself since I'm not in it for profit, but I thought it was amazing and just wanted to share.

are good ideas obvious and you have to keep them a secret so nobody steals them. or are good ideas hidden in plainsight and it takes intelligence to even notice it, so only the guy who notices its a good idea makes it, even if 1000 other people see the same idea?
it'd mean that the problem isn't idea finding, it's idea noticing.

I have an idea I think is worth millions and if i said it, it would be stolen instantly. But it would be done in a shitty way. But it wouldn't matter, the gimmick alone would sell. It'll be my first serious game after I finish my current project. I wanted a test project that's easy to release just to learn the whole process a-z before trying a serious game. But I really believe given how unique it is, how easy it is, that someone would steal that shit instantly.

It does actually. Polar Revenge. Global Warming has put pressure on the Polar Bear populations, as a result they move further into human territory. Conflict occurs. The bears go from wanting food, to wanting revenge. It's all an allegory for the Goth migrations during the late Roman Empire.

I used to dabble in stand up comedy, and you'd often see different amateur comedians tell the same exact jokes every few weeks.
A lot of them were even pretty funny, at least the first time you'd heard them.
But after hearing the same jokes week after week you begin to hate them and think the comedians telling them are bad.
I talked to a more experienced comic about it and he called them the "low hanging fruit" jokes, and that it's a phase almost every amateur comedian goes through before realizing they need to put a lot more effort in to stand out.
Same shit with game dev, or anything else really. Whatever you can think of, if you could come up with it that means the millions of other people with your interests and intelligence level could too. Even with comedy a lot of jokes you hear are generally the same premise but the delivery or specific words used is what makes them funny and original enough.

>RPGs are boring
>Look inside
>Player min/maxxed the game to the point that the gameplay became them doing something monotonous for hours so they can spend as little time as possible on the actual fun parts of the game
You see it with Pokemon, Dragon Quest, Skyrim, really any game with role playing elements.
How do I prevent this in the RPG I'm working on? Of course players will always try to optimize the fun out of a game, and you can't really prevent that. Like I made a roguelike and one player was complaining that the sound effects when resetting a game were getting annoying because he would reset the game over and over to get the "optimal" start of a run.
I just don't want people to spend 20 hours grinding low level enemies and then complain that the game is bad because they beat all the interesting battles by mashing A with an overleveled character.

Look at the SaGa series for inspiration
It has an anti-grind design, in most of them the more you grind the more your battle rank goes up and the harder enemies become. Fuck around and raise your battle rank too high too early and you may get your shit pushed in by regular encounters
SaGa Frontier is a good one to study
