i've noticed the reason i want to be a solodev is cause i don't wanna be stressed out. i want to be able to take months long breaks if i want to. i don't want to have that level of responsibility.but on the other hand, realizations like this always make me think about a second layer: maybe i overthink collaboration and put too much pressure on myself. maybe with the right people collaboration can be fun and even make me want to take responsibility. but that'd mean it's more about finding people you vibe with, rather than just finding random "skilled people".

prototyping without art, just with basic shapes. that has to be the secret. it's like sketching before drawing the actual painting. it's what nobody does and why they all fail probably. and it's what can separate you. maybe even on a psychological level. instead of perfectly knowing what to make, you iterate. instead of making all the art and having fear it will be unused, you now know it'll all be used cause the prototype already defines what is needed before even making a single art asset.maybe it's like with all creative work, the actual process in the background is different from what the consumers expect.

>>579842643maybe its also about the way we think. we are like "man this spell vfx looks cool, let me try to recreate that" (which is fine), but then we proceed trying to make a game like that. by just randomly trying to implement things we think is cool.we work on the spell vfx before even having an actual game. i guess this is fine if you dev as a job and you are only responsible for specific stuff. but it's probably bad if you are the lead dev who has to make an actual game.

My game is going to have four large authored kingdoms, one double the size and dungeons of the others, five authored smaller fiefs, procedural content (side dungeons, instanced missions, affixed equipment), an in-game legendarium, beast taming, discoveries, and 50 playable characters with three scales of vehicle and limited base building. Hoping for roughly 40-160 hours of gameplay depending on how hard you rush the plot and minmax your guy.$20

>>579851816The slop dev isn’t necessarily more confident in their game. They’re simply less afraid of being judged for it.They ship something, post it everywhere, get mocked, ignored, criticized—or occasionally go viral—and keep moving. Meanwhile, someone who genuinely cares about their work can become paralyzed precisely because it matters to them. Every post feels like exposing a piece of themselves to strangers who might hate it.So the slop has an enormous distribution advantage: its creator is willing to do the embarrassing, repetitive, shameless work of telling everyone it exists. How do you make it?Stop treating criticism as a verdict on you.Make the thing. Post the thing. Let people hate the thing. Post it again. You don't need to stop caring about your work. You need to stop caring about being chastised for caring about your work.

Maybe you'd study abroad and get very homesick and sad, or get robbed or even killed. Things could have been different for sure, but you can't say if it's better or worse. There are also plenty of opportunities for adults that kids don't have access to.Regardless, the past is the past. Is 15 euros/usd a good price for a roguelite with about 13 biomes, 70-80 different enemies, 7 playable characters and 50 items? its a 2d top down action roguelite, with rooms after each other a la slay the spire.
>>5798451081. Be already really good at something your game needs/has that gets engagement. Easiest is art or animation. If you're good at level design, post fake educational videos about how to design fun levels. If you're good at animation, post animation memes and fun facts.

I also keep running into content/safety restrictions with the smarter image-generation models like Nanobana 2, so I end up having to stitch together a bunch of separate outputs to get the result I want.Local generation can produce some great-looking stuff visually, but it’s pretty dumb when it comes to anatomy and other human-body details. That means I either have to constantly babysit it and correct weird/unrealistic results, or brute-force hundreds of generations until I get one that looks good—at which point I’m often stuck stitching together different body parts anyway.

i think idle games could be a real type of challenge, cause it's more about patience and long-term commitment rather than fast action.in the real world there are also low action things where winning is only about being the one who doesn't quit and just patiently keeps engaging.

General Question:What games/engines have official or independent dev kits for making levels that are simply very big?I want to make a game set in my hometown and its surroundings, and I cant decide where to start. My ideal would be to import satellite mapping and topographic data and start from there, adding gameplay features and a story. Sort of like a STALKER indie demake.GZDoom et al would let me make a large but bland shooter, maybe like Strife.Quake et al would be better but take much much longer, and I doubt it would support the size I want. If you can't work on your game for 60+ hours a week, don't even bother.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A8Ki5uRKqEY
The problem with vibe coding games is that it collapsed the cost of the surface layer. Mechanics, vibes, and genres are cheap to copy now.Once everyone can produce the same first 80%, that 80% stops becoming a product and instead becomes a commodity.AI compressed implementation time and expanded the comparison set. The bar went up. Speed is now shared, but taste and direction are not. Think about this when you are looking for an advantage.

The future AI war:1. Most big game companies rely on selling skins and cosmetic shit in in-game stores, this is how they stay in business and make insane amounts of money.2. As AI gets better, people will start simply using AI to generate whatever skins they want for the game instead of buying it, directly hitting these companies where it hurts.3. This results in a war of AI companies vs giant game companies.

You can check out the end of Brimstonewalker's stream to see a man get mindbroken three times in about half an hour by my game. God bless."I am the girl." -brimstonewalker"Brother you're basica- you're literally being uh-fucking approached by 'do not be afraid' angel of tutorial popups" -some guyI'm going to go off the deep end at this rate. Maybe in addition to picking magic on gamestart that inevitably gets the BFG9000 treatment of never being used, players should also get a permanent buff that significantly alters play. I don't have time to draw any more animations than the ones I already don't have time for, but it should be doable to add a buff option that makes Nemo twice as fast on the ground and autocounters periodically when an enemy gets close by kicking them so hard they explode. It's also pretty standard in hack and slash games to have lasers shoot out of the end of the player's sword that make it 2-3 times longer. Maybe the same buff could make her sword explode on a cooldown when it touches the end of her range so people stop falling into the trap of spinning their weapon in circles instead of just taking a straight line to the neck like a sane man.

If you make a game where the coding and backend is all done by AI but the art assets like sprites, models, music, etc is made by hand is there an ethical issue charging money?

>>579911603Yes.
There's nothing unethical about getting money from people that want you to give money. If you can get people to pay for full AI slop game, then let them. I am fully intending on experimenting with AI later this year and make a game that will be called something like "AI Slop Idle Rogue lite" and go wild with like $1k worth of whatever bullshit Claude/ChatGPT subscription I can get out of it and see what materializes as an experiment and shamelessly upload it to Steam.

Anyone else hate the kind of gamer who asks how the underlying game code works or how the an artistic thing was done or some other underlying thing rather than asking about lore or content?
