Astarion has +20 on lockpicking because he has thousands of years of experience being a sneak, Gale has +20 on Arcana checks since he's literally the archwizard of waterdeep, etc. There's a gameplay mechanic where a character automatically fails a skill check if they roll a 1, even if it's one of these hyper-epecialist characters doing something they could do with their eyes closed. Some people just fundamentally disagree with this gameplay mechanic and do not play with 1's/20's as auto pass/fail even on tabletop, and these same people may do the same thing in the videogame, and savescum when this happens.
