Sawyer famously said that he believes "anything worth doing is worth doing well, especially when it's something with so much emotional potential." I am of the same mind. And I think BG3 nailed it. That starts with respecting the characters - who they are and whether their being romanceable comes naturally. This is why I have been on record saying that I am glad that Jaheira was not turned into another romance (1). She already had her great love in Khalid and the canon is that she did not romance CHARNAME in BG2. To force her to become another "playersexual" romance would betray that character. (The opposing view is held by the usual suspects that care little for the characters and just want sex as a reward.) So what is this "romance done well" in BG3? It is when it enhances the characters, when it gives another dimension to their being, when it allows them to lay their vulnerable side bare. The Shadowheart who wishes to reclaim her life, the Lae'zel who learns to let go of her dogmas, the Karlach who chooses to live, the Minthara who can learn to wholly trust another. These characters don't need romance to be compelling, but romance can elevate them rather than diminish them.
