welp I'll post here too:Playing the last batch of demos for DD 70twitch.tv/havic_shttps://youtube.com/@havic_s
marketing talk > progress postsYeah, I said it.
There was a time in this general where people treated game deving as a hobby and posting progress was not seen as a way to advertise your game, but as a way to show a cool thing you had done, or even as a way to get feedback on if what you're doing looks cool. At some point we lost our way. We began to focus more on discussing metrics than game design.
my eyes are burning aggybros I can't keep devving for long...
Going to make a game to showcase the social contract of Rosseau has faults when observed in today american, and that certain especies of humans are more suited to the leviantan of hobbs.
>>580106072Marketing is just you making pretentious essays and then shilling your game. Any other advice is wrong.

Every time a good game that has an actual niche is released, it stands out from the rest. I'm willing to have my mind changed, you just have to show a good game that failed.

holy, western twitter and western social media is disgusting, I would never interact with any of those accounts
>>580106597If you post about your game and nothing else you'll run out of videos, tweets, and so on. Really you should post about how terrible modern indie games are then you'll have infinite content that gets 100s of ragebait clicks.

Happy Demo Day 70. Can't participate this time because I'm out of town due to a family emergency, and I can't compile a build from my laptop. Was hoping to show off my further optimizations and improved visuals, but it is what it is. At least I can make some okay progress while away from home. Have fun, everyone.

I have an unfortunate truth nuke for you allafter seeing many successful indie devs, the majority of them are married couples. They were married before they even started on their big successful game. They were also all childless.okay. That's all.
>>580110549even five thousand year old trees eventually die
>>580110685Are you saying they worked as a duo or just that they were married/had someone supportive in their lives?

>>580110685I think you only notice this because you desire it, so they stand out to you. it might not be a thing
I'm too tired to keep developing my prototype, any nodevs want to play antinomy of common flowers?
>>580110685dorf fort devs are 50 year old virginsyandere sim dev is a jewish incel
>>580110950I hardly hit my limits anymore. I guess the game is basically finished and it's just edits to what is there, rather than new code. I only use fable too.
>>580106638Idea I have been sitting on for years but its 4X + JRPG + Mount and blade. Basically you get a procgened world, get plopped in it, and you have to figure out what is going on and uncover the legend of whatever big bad is coming to destroy the world and then prepare for fighting it. The map would actively have people and nations going around doing things, waging wars, etc and you get to either control a party of 4 heros or be a party of 4 generals leading a big ass army. Combat is on its own map kind of like mount and blade, but hero characters when spec'ed for it can take on large swarms of people alone. Each world would gen different rules for magic, tech level, Job types, etc. I started vibeslopping it to prototype it but I'm hitting a wall where too many of the gameplay elements feel in conflict with each other. I need to sit on and and decide what feels more important.
>>580111170I've found that when I do larger refactors or things that touch up multiple systems my usage shoots up because of the spawned agents. Like Fable is very eager to deploy like 20 different agents to get context/information. When I'm executing in Opus or making smaller plans in Fable, I rarely run into limits as well (at least on the $100/mo plan).
>>580107561I mostly stopped caring as much for DD a couple of months ago. It does feel like so much has been replaced by vibe coding in the last couple of years
>>580111274UI looks a little AI
>>580111606it weird to give feedback to clearly AI slopped prototypes. does the dev just paste the feedback into the AI?
>>580110992>I think you only notice this because you desire itThis is by going over all the developers I have met that make considerable levels of money off their game, millions or sometimes just several hundred thousand.>so they stand out to you.of course, I wouldn't be saying this if this small sample size wasn't weird. it's a small sample size and I'm saying it because it stands out.>>580111125maybe the difference is they aren't social enough so I don't meet them>>580110917They actually work as duos.

Didn't realize an enemy behavior had become broken in an older update I did.Oops, just reverted it.

In a roguelike deckbuilder, do I really need another progression system other than the cards that go into the deck, such as StS relics? Let' do game design 101.Hammer is oversized and hard to use made from a big magical gem, any small enemy it will crush instantly gibbing them but it's hard to use like imagine you press S and the true S that you would normally have control is offset from your S using the hammer. So If you press S you would misstep by 10 mm rather than 1 mm step. Since the hammer instant kills, it's slow upside is you can perform a melee swing crush the goblin in a single hit and that basically kills moral causing them to flee allowing you to use the glove.ALTERNATIVELYif your doing magic, fucking same thing but ooooo magical hammer.ALTERNATIVELY ALTERNATIVELYmagical hammer but your basically just picking when it slams down before recasting it or it's a summon. In short. HAMMER.

Been working on this solo for the last few months after getting laid off from my studio. It’s a tidy-up game except you’re cleaning up after medieval battles. Thousands of body parts everywhere, and your job is basically to pick up all the shit everyone left behind and throw it into an interdimensional recycling portal.Trying to make the cleanup itself satisfying while slowly giving you more ridiculous ways to deal with the mess.I’m at the point where I’ve been staring at this thing for so long that I can’t tell what’s obvious to a new player anymore. What do you guys think? If the game actually sells, I’d obviously like to go back and replace/improve that stuff properly.I get why people are wary of AI slop, but I think there’s a difference between generating your entire game with AI and a solo dev using a few tools to get something finished with basically no budget.

>>580157791>fair
>>580157728yeah its barely a game
>>580150714absolute truth, i've been saying for a while now, game quality is arguably the least important element of game development, "bad" games sell all the time, all you need is a virality factor that combines well with a high enough conversion rate to make development possible, the game just needs to be mostly playable, the rest of it comes down to what leads people to discovering it and what motivates people to play it after this occurs, it's definitely not game quality, it's more presumably some fantasy they conjure in their minds about how them playing the game relates to their personal identitylike how a significant portion of the undertale fanbase are lonely teenagers, maybe playing a friend simulator helps them feel appreciated for oncesomething like thismy current side project is researching semi-popular games and trying to identify what sort of fantasy the games provide and how it would relate to the identity of the player
somehow the only game i can think of that i love, and not just "like", is the game i find the most beautiful. but what is beauty? to me (it seems), it's a mix of:a) nature (no flat/comic style)b) art (no 3d scans/smart materials/pbr)c) graphical clarity (no shadow/lod popping or taa jittering)d) familiarity (somehow a mix of fantasy + real life historical inspiration works better for me than pure fantasy)e) imperfectionsf) visual clarity (silhouette, only detail enough to look good but not so details distract you or overload your brain)but i can't shake off the feeling that the biggest factor might be personal preference. i can play a comic style game, but I can never "love it". while some others can love it.
>>580158471just likemake game
>>580157791it's fair because you can also do it, it's just highly disappointing to be shown evidence of the video game consumer demographic having near-zero quality standards for the games they play and prioritizing explicit fantasies over everything elsei'm certain from what i've seen that you can make a game where all you do is press a button to throw eggs at trump supporters, creative videos optimized for retention to trigger the algorithms on tiktok and youtube shorts and instagram reels until at least one video goes viral, and hit 1,000 reviews 60% positive within three days after releaseit's not even about actual video games, it's just about validating the desires of your audience, mechanics are a cherry on top for autists, the average consumer just wants to see their desires played out in digital form

>>580160856you are right, it is barely a game, but consumer-facing products tend to follow this trend, you hopefully now understand why netflix is more popular than steam, despite having equal accessibility, steam is actually more accessible by having free games, free registration, and computationally cheap games that can run on low end devicesdespite this, people don't care about mechanics or build quality as much as the average indie dev would assume, they only really want validation of their own identityimagine an iranian nationalist who enjoys the movie 300, impossible, even if they love action films the "fantasy" of spartans humiliating persia would oppose their identity, they would not consume the productas for games, people bought it because it was spammed on tiktok and has big titties, tiktok scrollers love titties, they identify with their attraction to tittiesthat's all it is

How would it figure out if that was a good game, what parts of it need adjustment, what works and what doesn't in terms of the designs? It can't do that. It isn't a human being. It lacks the senses and feelings required to process that information.
>>580184981nice
>>580184923>Right now it tends to just go for what features are common and popular when implementing mechanics on its own.Which is how it Should do it imo. The assumption I want my clanker to make is that if I dont specify something that that means it is less central to my idea than the things I did explicitly mention and therefore that gap should be filled in without too much extra creativity since its not what is supposed to be the players point of attention. If I dont specify how a characters walk animation looks I probably dont want him doing jump flips and summoning dragons to ride as he walks.
>>580185295I'm not implying it's a human. I'm saying it can look at what's popular and replicate those things without you telling it to do that. It already does that. It's also capable of making bad decisions too obviously.I'm not sure if you could just prompt it with "make a game" and it will just come up with something interesting because I don't dare waste my credits on something pointless I don't even want it to do. I do say vague things to it like "make a character controller" or whatever and it makes a lot of design decisions on its own and it's usually pretty good/feels like a well made game.
I got sick of working on the game i've been working on for months with all of its complicated interlinked systems, so I spent the last 24 hours making a different game. I went with a super simple concept and executed it really well I think, its super relaxing to play. I think I'm going to slap it up on steam and see if anyone'll pay 5 bucks for it.

The other night he had the honor of meeting the creator of Stardew Valley, Eric Barone! They talked about how farming sim loops draw players into a transient state and how as creators they decide which feedback to listen to.
i appreciate devs who dont want to make a unique hit, but who take an existing game and try to improve it.everytime something releases that i like, there's no alternative anymore afterwards, no improvements. cause "it's done already" and everybody wants their unique game. they dont want to compete with the existing game.but the thing is: most first games in a genre are kinda shit. and they need improvements and polish etc. - but nobody wants to do that.i get why, i still appreciate if someone tries it.

Thank God DD happened before Sage. All of the DD feedback was very useful, I made some quick patches thanks to you guys.Next week I wil push a full public demo that will include...● Balance changes.● More levels with new props and structures.● More chest items: The DD chest's only had gems due to time constraints but they are also supposed to have powerups in the item pool like shields, speed boosts and damage boosts.● Two new enemies. One of them is ranged and only spawns in bodies of water, can submerge inside the water for cover. The other one is a chest mimic that can't be killed, when you open a chest there's a small chance it will attack you so there's always a gamble when opening chests.I will also submit the Steam page application.

>>580217095Because for languages like say C# even after like deobfuscation process that would give you weird variable names or shittier sloppy code, you can now ask LLMs to clean up the code base and make it readable and to fill the missing blanks contextually. You can also decompile C/C++ programs now easily if you give LLMs a debugger and it's not IDA C pseudocode tier garbage, like an actual nice codebase that then you could work with.
how do you guys deal with game dev's blockhaven't worked on anything for months, keep getting the itch to go back and start something up againdon't really have any ideas and can't think of any models i'd like to makemy workflow is also getting fucked by moving to modern unity, lots of packages i use not getting brought over to URPtried out metal garden the other day and thought it was pretty neat but idk how to make these large maps with vistas in a way any of the modern engines will likewas going back and reading the developer notes and it seems like something he had problems with too
>>580217090>Do you mean the fact that the arrow isn't centered above the imp? He's talking about how the pixels don't remain pixel perfect. Just with the arrow alone, rather than retaining positioning on a pixel grid, the squares that make up the pixels on the arrow rotate. That is, of course, not how it works in actual retro pixel art games, where the pixels were the literal resolution of the screen being drawn by the console. You also have the clouds being made of way larger pixel sizes. The mixed pixel sizes look straight up bad, but rotated pixels, like with the arrow, tend to be a bit more forgivable.
I know that I shouldn't, but I kind of want to make my own engine. 2D games are neat because they're small, under 100 MB, and you can install a ton of them at once. Godot takes up half of that, and I know anything I write myself will be like 1 MB or less without assets. If I can make 3D games that are as small as 2D games, I think that's worth aiming for.
>>580217673is that your game? it looks interestingpersonally, I'm dealing with severe OCD which makes me need to rewrite things over and over when programming, so I finally started taking medicine and it's helping, I'm almost back to "normal" nowanyway, I work on design documents and make very slow progress on things I want like prototypes and machine learning stuff
>>580217673Just like make game. Do a game jam and use a workflow you've never used before.
>>580217731oh, yeah, that. desu i don't give a shit about rixels so i probably won't change them. you're right about the background, although in the past i did try making one without mixels and I just thought it looked worse for some reason. I might have my artist take a crack at it.
>>580217673its all about keeping your workflow painless and fun
>>580217673I'm going through this myself. Every game I've released has flopped. I'm in the beginning stages of a new one and I can't really work up the motivation to work on it knowing it's very likely no more than like 50 people will play it.
>>580217947>I kind of want to make my own engine
>>580217673Take a break. I don't really have an issue with "block" where I run out of ideas or something. But needing a break from game dev definitely yes. I've taken like two week breaks before and come back refreshed.
>>580218234I think the background in that pic looks a lot better. The clouds could use with a bit more shading to give them some more obvious volume though, sorta simulating balloons in a pillow case.
>>580218537How do you come up with ideas to what to do next then? I often just have a lot of ideas I consider bad or repetitive and nothing gets done.
>>580218042>personally, I'm dealing with severe OCD which makes me need to rewrite things over and over when programmingyou too?>type word>ctrl z>type word>ctrl z>repeat multiple timesit was the same word all of those times. idk why the ocd triggers with gamedev.
>>580218684Well either way, I still need to brainstorm the background more. Right now, there are only three distinct areas (clouds, sun, and space). You don't see the sun at all until you're at almost 900 ft (which takes a long time - in that first webm, I only got to 38 ft). I'll probably add some more visual elements and whatnot.
>>580219543yes, I type over 130wpm, so for me it's the entire function sometimesit's from feeling like I'm going to remember the association from the PTSD I had when writing with that part of the game or program forever, so I need to rewritenow with the meds, it only happens when things are more important to me
>>580218042nah it's metal garden, short little fps game that did decently well and has neat artdon't have OCD, but ik the feeling. contributed to a few month-long game jams and have almost not submitted despite placing top ~20 almost every time because i was disgusted with what i made even though it was fine>>580218262ig this is what i struggle with the most. i primarily do level design and it feels like there's no comfortable workflow for making anything anymoreyou either do basic braindead blockouts which if your focus is atmosphere like mine is then it doesn't help you or you do high effort blender/hammer stuff which gets you stuck in an import/export loop which constantly disrupts your flowso I swap to s&box, which is great, the mapping tool is cool, but pretty much their entire rendering pipeline is set up for games with modern visuals and dynamic lighting, the opposite of what im looking for when trying to make games LOL
Make uninspired slop games that sell so that you can afford to make your dream game.
