what does /agdg/ do when you're struggling with a creative rut/game dev block?
when you're in between projects and don't seem to have any ideas or get to blender and are stuck staring at the default cube?

Game Reviews:
>Marotte - Legend of Pong Long Fighter Sunny'Na
Better than the last time I played it. I had no clue what I was doing last time and eventually just gave up on it. I had a better idea this time though I think the tutorial could still use more work, at times I just instead of playing the intended way threw the dice at my opponent to run down their HP. Story was interesting and had me hyped to play more as I went along...and then "Thanks for playing the demo" AIEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!! But yeah I need more explanation of the dice system, much better than before but a bit more can be cleared up (idk what, I probably had something in mind but forgot by the time I wrote this).

>Pipkin's Quest
I loved it. I beat the demo. Music is very nice, mechanics are nice. Nothing much else to say, I like the artstyle btw but definitely add some art to the exterior walls.

I feed all my ideas to a chat bot, tell it to ask me questions about my game that it doesn't understand (to help clarify my ideas clearly to it,) and ask the clanker to organize it in a smart way to implement it so I don't end up going about it in a bad way.

Sometimes I go off the game plan when I'm bored but I mostly stick to it.

I don't have a dream game and I don't really need money because I have a well paying job but I want to make some sort of interesting game that makes people think I'm intelligent and cool so I will become socially accepted and desired but I keep trying to find the perfect idea for this and no idea seems good enough to satisfy me. What should I do?

I'm happy you enjoyed the story. I have quite a bit more written, but I ran out of time to create the backgrounds and additional character portraits needed for it. Introducing Red Maple as the first boss felt like the best place to end the tutorial/prologue for now.

I also agree that the tutorial needs more work when it comes to teaching the rules of Marotte. The two random encounters before Mame's base were originally meant to help teach those mechanics, but I couldn't give them enough polish in time, so I converted them into regular random encounters instead.

The next update will be for /agdg/ Demo Day 71. I plan to have the dice customization system fully working by then. Players will be able to place stickers on individual dice faces, and completing a scoring row with five matching stickers will trigger an additional effect, such as poison, silence, healing, MP recovery, turning the enemy undead, and more. This should give players more reason to pursue scoring rows instead of simply throwing dice at the enemy.

I also want to improve the 3D dice board with borders and obstacles based on the terrain you're fighting on. That should make manual rolling more meaningful than just watching your opponent's tits jiggle or knocking their held dice off the board.

Lastly, the overworld will open up so you can explore the road to Red Maple's labor camp. Story events, shops, and unique encounters will be scattered around the map. Maybe even a silent, mysterious woman with a very powerful whip.

I sincerely appreciate the feedback, and I'll do my utmost to make your Demo Day 71 playthrough a more fun and rewarding experience.

A secret nobody tells anybody else about is the more games you have, the more consistent key sales are. Its not much, but it adds an extra protection layer when a game does bust. I make so much more money from my day job than game dev, but the biggest thing with Steam is more games means more opertunities for a sell.

I'm porting my game's multiplayer to work with the browser versions because that's how most people are playing. I think it will be populated immediately based on the analytics. Was a ghost town before. The game's pretty kickass now. Both of my mod projects for Red Dead 2 are pretty popular, my games have players every day, my Skyrim videos get quite a few views every day.

It's more like, you should be engrossed with games on a level, where you just implicitly understand them and their design on some level, and don't need intro101 classes.
Otherwise, it's gonna be an arduous task to slowly claw your way to understanding and then making interesting or engaging things.

game design is learned by playing
i think going to school for game design is retarded, you either have it or you don't
level design is learned by analyzing existing levels, then branches out into a bunch of shit based on what kind of game you're making
>>
>>580234208
Your genetics strongly predispositions your eventual adulthood IQ. You need at minimum 130 IQ if you ever want to hope to make serious video games and 145+ to stand a chance at making something market competitive. Many retards here lost the gamedev lottery the moment they were born.

My dick is getting hard for cris right now, which is not at all unusual

Why do people like Cris so much? I don't really pay attention to anyone named around here.
>>
>>580232610
0. Before you design anything, make sure the controls and physics have gone gold.
1. Retard-proof tutorial level that forces the player to interact with necessary (not all, only needed to beat the game) gameplay mechanics in a way they literally cannot progress unless they get it.
2. Make new levels each with a unique gimmick or set piece. Ensure the gimmick complements the core mechanics.
2a. Introduce gimmick in safe environment
2b. Make a bunch of setups exploring the gimmick
2c. Make a fun exciting thing that really shows what the gimmick has to offer
2d (optional). Wrap it up and end the level
Extra: Do not require every single mechanic in your game to be needed to beat it. That's for the autists to have fun with. If all Mario games required shell jumps, Nintendo would be bankrupt.

By the way, is this book still up to date? I read some reviews that said it's not as useful anymore and wanted to ask before hyper fixating on the lecture

>>580247850
I wouldn't bother with some book. Godot is updated a lot and it will be out of date. Just download godot, play with it, read documention, try newer video tutorials if that helps.

Look up how to mod godot games too, you can decompile any godot game basically and look at how big games got made in godot.
>>
>>580247689
no i've played bokube recently
all your levels are way cluttered with tons of really uncomfortable and unpolished mechanics whereas the alpha version tried to be coherent and valued the simplicity
your final level is just an ai generated slopcherry on top of everything else
but at least it made me realize that there is a phenomenon that exists when you work on your game for too long; you start developing backwards, you start overthinking your designs and overcomplicating everything

bokube helped me realize one thing: indie games are not meant to be developed long-term, it is an outright death sentence to develop one game past the 4/5 year mark, possibly even earlier than that

why are normgroids so obsessed with the idea of "oneshotting" a game with AI? if they made something modular and broke it all down into shorter scripts then they could actually have an AI do most of the work and end up with something truly functional... but nooooo... it just has to be 1 prompt resulting in a north korean tourist grocery """store""".

The only people oneshotting are AI shills and enturpenuers. Look into all of their bios, none of them are established devs, all just AI shills because to them videogames are not something they want to build, it’s a benchmark, a prayer to the machine god of ASI that they worship. They don’t want to make games that they always wanted to make, at least most of them, they just love AI succeeding and their biggest desire is to see you burn, fail, lose job, be made redundant and outclassed by AI because that means AI is stronger and AI won another battle. We had vibe-coding for more then a year now and yet there are no big cool games made with it because one-shorting and destroying the industry with no survivors was the goal from the start. They hate you because you are in a field AI can plausibly replace in the near future, which means you are an opponent to it and you joining them means surrender.

Implementing my "relics" into the game.
Except they're divided into "artifacts" which affect the whole party and "equipment" which only attach to one party member.
I have the shop interface that adds artifacts to the run done, now I need to work on actually getting their effects to work. Equipment will come later.

The current idea I have is to have them act the same way as status effects where every combatant keeps a reference to the artifacts and checks them every time something that might trigger one happens. I even have them reusing the same enum to determine how they trigger.

I'm starting to think of game dev as one of those things where I complain about it every time I bring it up but still insist to others that I like it.

Also finished the 3rd lesson on drawabox.

two types of idea guying
a) i want to make max amount of money, whats the best idea?
b) who am i? whats my identity? why do i personally love? what do i want? what do i value?

A only works if you are business man good at finding investors, hiring employees, making marketing plans, building a work environment etc.

B only works if you know who you are and if you stay honest to who you are. it has nothing to do with optimizing ideas, it's all about having a strong identity.

i wonder how much of the industry is devs thinking "i need to do this cause its popular", yet in reality if they wouldn't do it it'd work even better.

somewhat cargo cult mentality, thinking you need to blindly copy e.g. pbr rendering, yet in reality people would go insane over osrs tier graphics.
>>
>>580274858
it can do non-slop, but it's not consistent. it could probably do better with the right reference material. if you import half-life assets into blender, so when it builds directly in blender, it could analyze the models so it builds in that way. I haven't seen anyone try this yet.

if you think about it, the biggest demotivator is truth.

imagine grinding in an mmorpg. you think "if i only grind all day, i'll become rich and powerful". then someone calculates the rates for you and you realize it'd take like 1000 years to become the top just by grinding alone. so what do you do? you stop.

ofc it makes sense to stop. but this is just one example. the same could apply to making a game. you might start working on a game, knowing nothing about gamedev. and one day you realize how much time, money, energy etc. it takes and then you stop.

the thing is. if you only follow truth, you end up just getting a normal job and just do everything as a hobby.

to be motivated you need some sort of delusion.

i know i made a messy flawed point, but maybe it makes it more correct that way, cause we function by flawed logic and feelings and associations, not by pure logic (the universe cant be perfectly predicted)

maybe an example is that sometimes the most cringe people become the most successful, cause they were delusional about being an actor or singer or tech bro, until they suddenly are successful.

Why would you git commit every hour? I work on my project all day and probably only commit 4-5 times a day after I'm done with a big feature.
>>
>>580277557
Yeah it needs to be slightly random so that you don't anticipate it.
I also need some way to stop this from working:
while :; do sleep 30m; git commit --allow-empty -m 'shock stop'; done
Maybe check the commit contents in some unspecified way, but that may lead to privacy issues/complaints.
>>
>>580276843
You are so weird dude. I hope you're getting the help you clearly need

Not Cris but I was a nodev who wanted to make a game for years until finally getting an addy script. Nobody plays my games but at least I start and finish them now.
>>
>>580277480
If you need to do shit like this you just don't want to make a game that badly, hate to break it to you. That's ok, stop forcing yourself to do stuff you don't want to do and go work on something you're actually excited about.

If you take one into your home and feed it voluntarily, I guess. It's similar. Have you ever actually played a MMO? You're not just grinding for XP, you're either grinding for strong item drops which is gambling (but every ticket is an hour of your life) or in korean MMOs, you grind to enchant your equipment which has a 1/3 chance to completely break your item with each extra enchant.
Yeah it "could" take you 100 years to become best on the server. But if you're lucky it could also just take you 1 year.

well, we have 2 types of buildings, normal and wide ones. both use a box-like mesh with floors inside that we shatter once and then skew to fit the shape of each proc gen building.
normal buildings are destroyed entirely when enough damage accumulates, while you can poke holes on wide buildings. there's also a structural graph in place for wide buildings so that the top falls of if you destroy the pieces at the bottom

I'm really tired of you non-passion losers
honestly
I keep giving you real help and advice as well
every day
literally
I don't expect you to follow the path I took
simply make good, passionate software
it's not hard
unless you lack passion
if you lack passion, leave
yes really
go away
I wasn't even 10 years old when I started learning how to program, and it was from making tribes construct game modes, the thing which came before gmod
go
away
from
here
if
you
are
a
fake
game
developer
you don't become a game developer one day and start making a commercial game the next day
if you are trying to do that, you are delusional and trying to go too fast
if you're trying to do that, you might still have passion
if you have passion
make
something
interesting
to
yourself
stop asking me or everyone else here what your character artwork should look like
stop asking me or everyone else here if you should add one/two handed weapon switching
stop asking me or everyone else here how you should design your level
stop complaining about making camera modes
I made more money from game development than no-passion greedy losers when I was very young,
and yet
that wasn't my goal
I wasn't even attempting to make money
people asked me to make a donation page
and I used this money to pay for more things to fuel my passion
what are you even doing here?
leave
only if this is directed at you though
only you know if you have passion
and you know if you're lying to yourself
if this post seems demotivational to you
then you should not be trying to make video games
go do something else
seriously
>yes, I made my post in this style on purpose, don't

welcome to multi-line posting my friend
you see, it comes naturally when you are certain your words contain value
look at the oot remake
if you don't like video games, don't pretend to play them, don't get involved in creating them
just petition your government for a stronger economy
the video game industry is not an outlet for people whose lineage lost access to manufacturing work because it was shipped overseas to asian slaves
figure it out
you don't need to cope by doing stuff you don't care about because it's theoretically more profitable than wageslaving at amazon
there are solutions not rooted in desperate cope
the people will discover this truth when the time is right
there is hope

I'm mooching off the government. Even that feels like it's coming to an end. This is not sustainable for me. I don't know how they expect people to live with these amounts. After mandatory bills and food I'm usually like 100€ in the red. I don't smoke or drink alcohol. Maybe I could cut down my food expenses if I started eating the absolute cheapest trash but at that point I might as well go jump off a bridge. It's not like I'm buying particularly expensive food or anything. It's just gotten too expensive.

Hoping to release something next year and it's sorta make it or die for me. Making a bit but not enough to fund next couple years of development is a death sentence.

currently living with parents, going to look for work with temp agencies when my money runs low, if i wasn't living with parents i'd be splitting cheap rent in a more affordable city and working part time somewhere
no shame in mooching because i am certain i will repay them what they have provided for me
my gamedev productivity would be 30% of what it currently is if i got a job, even a part time one, because my routine is very immersed in daily repetition, even a day off can ruin my momentum, so i'm trying to avoid working until i absolutely need to, but even if i did need to work i am still certain i will be successful, it would just take longer and the execution would be less elegant

we will be missing out on sales!

quick! optimize the mass-appeal formula.
do this, or we lose our investors, and will no longer be able to afford operational costs, even with downsizing operations
it is sad what inflation has done to our company, we can no longer afford to make humble games, we need massive hits, or we will die
this was caused by inflation, which was caused by a lack of exports, which was caused by reduction of civic participation in our resource extraction and manufacturing industries, which was caused by a rebellious workforce, which was cause by poor working conditions, which was caused by chronic anxiety amongst the elites, which was caused by a lack of peace amongst the working class, which was caused by a lack of charity amongst the poor, which was caused by something i am unconfident enough in to extrapolate
and now, many decades later, we are suffering the subtle consequences of this butterfly effect
sad!
let us learn our lessons, promptly!

Make something functional and playable. You can always redesign it. It's really not that hard to refactor a UI. Besides, putting too much effort into presentation early will bite you when you inevitably change gameplay mechanics and how they'll need to be presented.

>>

I've been trying to think of something that is educational, but not super on the nose about it, like "Solve math problems to do damage". Slay the Spire requires you to do a lot of mental math to play well, and I've learned a lot of interesting words from games like Dragon Quest. Wondering if you could channel stuff like that to make an educational game that doesn't really feel educational or feel like doing homework. Kids will absolutely learn new things and try their hardest if its working towards something you can make them care about, but they also have a great ability to see through bullshit.
>>
>>580295472
if it were that easy, then everyone would be doing it

Nah, they'll just start detecting AI using the "invisible watermarks" that companies are implementing. Then disclosure won't be voluntary and they'll flag it immediately as AI. Whether or not consumers care is a different story though.

>>
>>580295472
What are some examples? I'll tell you if AI really did it in a few sessions, answer is probably no.

When new AI models release, people shilling it often exaggerate what they can do in one session and they'll show what looks like a complete game while hiding that most mechanics are missing because the prompt didn't cover that.

I use AI everyday, unless you're shelling out like 10K in credits and prompting it constantly, it's not going to do that.
>>
The same thing that's happening to Steam now has been happening to YouTube for like 2 years now. Unless the watermark thing like >>580295930 happens, there really isn't anything anyone can do about it. I'm of the opinion that AI genned stuff is fine if it's high quality, and God knows there's a ton of manmade stuff that sucks, but most of the stuff being genned really is just slop. It's gotten to the point that there are AI witch hunts against fully manmade stuff because nobody trusts anyone anymore. The internet as we know it will become basically unusable pretty soon unless something changes.
>>

>>580295563
Yeah I think there’s pretty much no point in dedicated educational games -- games per se are already educational if they are enjoyable in a sense. It’s kinda the definition of playing: Learning by doing, but without the high stakes of reality.
More importantly than dry facts or models, games teach you critical thinking and actual use-cases. Knowing that a square build minimized resources spent on walls is more immediately valuable than knowing about quadratic function yadda yadda.
Bridge building is also a nice game genre to get a feeling for functions/graphs.
I don’t think there’s a point in making a game that requires you explicitly to find the zeroes of a polynomial… once you’re into it, the sole task of finding the zeroes (on paper) can be pretty fun desu. But if you’re not into it, the game should rather be such that it models a problem where playing along the zeroes would be optimal; and then either you figure out the math or the intuition, or you don’t, I guess.

that's not really a problem, I was trying to say the look of the UI isn't important and it seemed like the other anon didn't really understand I was trying to motivate, not demotivate anyone
focus on fluid, good feeling functionality and then it's not important how it looks, since basically everyone can feel when a UX design feels good, even if they don't know why it does
it is one of the or possibly the most important thing, and like 95% of the anons here would likely disagree, which isn't out of maliciousness but a lack of passion for UI/UX, if someone talks about not enjoying UX, that's what I mean
I actually highly enjoy UX design and I generally make my own library per-project since it doesn't take forever

It's pretty difficult. At least it seems difficult, I'm not a ux designer so i don't touch that stuff i do character art.
>>
>>580299035
It's always 1 of 2 things:
1. Your idea has been done before, and you just think it hasn't because nobody cared about the other games that did it. More research will show you a few similar games that flopped because there was simply no demand for it.
2. Nobody has done your idea before, but that's because it's either impossible to implement or it never made it past testing since it just wasn't fun.
The mistake I (and I'm assuming others) made is ignoring these signs because I was overconfident in my abilities.
If it's option 1 you will think those other games just weren't executed or marketed well enough and you can do better (you can't).
If it's option 2 you will either give up when you realize it can't be done, or double down release something awful because of the sunk cost fallacy.

#1 is just a beginner or low-IQ mistake. Some anons simply neglect to do any serious market research. Others lack the capacity to analyze and reduce gameplay down to its fundamentals, and thus can't understand that they are simply making worse reskins of existing games.

As for #2, game design is genuinely hard. It's not impossible, but coming up with an original and unique combination of mechanics that results in actually fun gameplay is one of the hardest things to do in gamedev. However, many breakout indie successes fall under this category, and thus resulting in many gamedevs (including myself) chasing that dragon.

No one's asking you to come up with original mechanics. There are hundreds to maybe thousands of known and well-understood game mechanics. Games are combinations of mechanics, and even a small number chosen from that pool result in an overwhelmingly large set of possibilities (e.g. 10 mechanics selected from a pool of 100 results in 1.7310309e+13 combinations)

Even the smallest unique twist to an existing game that are actually still fun are not easy to come by in this vast sea.

I've been thinking about increasing the fog even more to stop the player from seeing enemies too far away and being able to just snipe them before they even get the chance to attack.
Retro games are known for having low render distance anyways

are we in the death of ambition era of gamedev?
everything is too big in scope now. nobody wants to make a sims game anymore, nobody wants to make an open world gta, nobody wants to make an mmorpg, nobody wants to make an open world rpg.

i get it, it's out of scope. but think about it, doesn't that mean that ambition is dead now? if everybody thinks everything is out of scope, it's basically game over right? imagine all scientists agreeing now that space travel is too big in scope, it'd basically mean we all gave up on dreams.
>>

>>
>>580313361
>nobody is falling for the scope trap anymore

>>
>>580313361
There's two reasons:
1) It used to be that a minimum wage job could support yourself and a family, so it was affordable to put even more budget aside for the game. Now a full time job barely covers rent and food, you can forget about having even more money for devving or paying people for commissions.
2) Games have greatly expanded in terms of size. What could pass as a full game, would be considered a boring, short demo these days. You need 20x the output content-wise that people 10-20 years ago had to do.

It's not matter of ambition but it's just not feasible if you want to be realistic about not only shipping something but shipping something that people will want to play.

Ambition isn't dead. It's just that when you see shitty little games make big money it feels foolish to spend time making a big game when you won't have any guarantee you'll make any sort of return on that time investment. Big games are for when you don't have to worry about the money.
>>
>>580313361
Games are getting less and less hard to make, pretty sure you'll be seeing more of those games in the future. One issue with life simulation (like The Sims) is that the main fanbase is rabid and insane women/gay men who complain a lot. Makes development harder from a marketing and social media standpoint for them.
