Hello friends, American from Louisiana here. I just picked up this crpg called 'Baldur's Gate 3' and I have to say, I am terribly disappointed by the game after Act 1. Not only does the quality take a nosedive, but the reactivity is mad-lib tier, and the writing gets really woke. Does it get any better or should I just replay WotR, the greatest crpg ever made?

Superstitious followers are scared of ghosts and goblins while Skeptical followers will lose morale if you give those things the time of day. The same with Peaceful/Aggressive, Greedy/Giving, etc. there's a lot of overlap and it's impossible to keep everyone high, but as far as I can tell so long as you keep things "good enough" morale wise you don't have to worry too much

The same answer can earn trust or cause offence. These are not just scenes you watch. They are problems you solve through role-playing. Copying more stats is not the same as recreating more role-playing. The test is whether it tries to recreate tabletop play, not whether it copies every rule. I consider it a CRPG, and anyone who thinks about it with an apt mind will come to the same conclusion. Our campaign settings. Sometimes it's necessary to divorce game mechanics and RP, and I do it when I need to, but I always like to avoid it if I can. One early mistake Bloodlines 2 made is that enemies are just too powerful relative to the player. You're a centuries old elder, and the majority of your enemies are ghouls or lower, yet it often takes several hits to kill them. I don't really play games for difficulty, and I think the game just feels better with the player doing tremendously more damage. Ghouls and hunters are rightly swept aside, and its only a few powerful kindred later on that can really pose any sort of serious threat to you. It just helps the game and the character jive more.

We will of course be playing the female character. Better aesthetic, better voice, and just fits the game a little better IMO. Like any serious CRPG, I try to have some of my backstory squared away before beginning. Born in Venice, raised in Constantinople, rich but not too rich, they could afford books and tutors, but were far below the great houses. Petite, fair-skinned and blonde, she was a gifted bookworm who loved the city's libraries and busy markets. She always had an inkling that she preferred women, but that wasn't the sort of thing you could just talk about back then, and she was embraced at age 17 as a virgin by Meerlinda before she could ever act on it. The game does unfortunately prevent us from customizing our appearance until a little later, after showing the character a few times, so we'll just assume her hair is fairly dirty until she makes it to the haven. Many normies would simply be put off by playing as that, it would not be interesting or dramatic storytelling for them, it would be a barrier of entry.So Tav should exist, and Tav delivers a different experience from Durge. But to say that Durge is simply Tav+ has some truth to it. There are several unique items, abilities, characters, and scenes unique to him and Tav has no equivalent.

List a lot of post-Clementine games, VTMB2 also has the CRPG equivalent of yellow paint, something to let players know when their dialogue choice made a difference of some kind. Unfortunately history is showing that even this isn't enough, and that players need some mechanism for understanding exactly what changed or else they think it changed nothing. The game does a really good job with subtle changes from dialogue and appearance, but some of it isn't as apparent if you only do one playthrough. I think the future of the genre is unfortunately going to be a little FMV playing every time you pick a line, which has a dev explicitly walk through what changed just now. Sad, but that's where the audience is.

Every game has detective vision now, and complaining about it is trendy, but I never mind it in cases where it makes sense from a lore perspective. Geralt really is an expert hunter/tracker and has keen senses, and the Nomad likewise has access to Auspex, predator's senses, and all that stuff. And I really like the little differences like how you can hear their heartbeats but not for kindred. There are a lot of little bits of lore and story that never result in a cutscene, and the player has to kind of understand it on their own. Part of me likes that sort of thing, even if I know the faith in the average CRPG player is misplaced. One of the first indications you have that Fabien isn't so atypical a Malkavian after all.

They use the pretext of a once in a lifetime blizzard to explain away having a city with no cars. Arkham Origins did something similar. I get it, but I kind of don't care for it. It's such a blizzard that nobody can drive, but I see people walking around everywhere. If it was such a big storm they wouldn't be out on the sidewalks and trying to get into the bar either. Sometimes it's better to just not bother explaining these things I think. There's no reason there aren't cars driving by in Santa Monica, there just aren't.

There are little moments throughout the game where you get a sense for how far above you are compared to Fabien and the normal kindred. Making her so much more agile was a good choice, navigating the city is fun and there are a lot of moments where you do feel kind of like a monster instead of a person with superpowers.

'Thin blood alchemy' which is the game's excuse for different potion consumables, and I guess a big fixture in V5 of the setting. Not the biggest fan of it as an independent enterprise, it seems like you'd just have some thin-bloods chained up in the basement of a chantry somewhere Lily style, but the way it's portrayed in this game is a decent compromise. You can survive as a thin blood, sort of, but you're going to be a glorified blood doll for a real vampire.
dao has pretty good reactivity, unlike many other crpgs such as BG3, which has what I like to call "mad-lib" style reactivity.

On some level I would prefer to have the old skills restored like lockpicking. On another it wouldn't make much sense for the character to know anything about it, or hacking, and there's something satisfying about being strong enough to just rip locks off, break chains, kick in the doors, etc. It's always lame when game's introduce limitations that make no sense, "you can't go that way because there is a knee high fence", "you're strong enough to knock down a brick wall but you can't break this padlock" so it's nice to avoid that too.

I do like these little moments where you determine your background naturally through conversation, and it comes up multiple times throughout the game. The original had backgrounds (disabled originally, modded back in) but never really reacts to them. These lines in particular even come back to you in the last fight.

Finally we can set our appearance, which means finally our character was able to take a bath and put her hair up. Technically the bathroom is cluttered and unusable in-game, but we'll head canon that part. The appearance menu is deceptively large, a lot of options are just repeated but in different colors, but still it's nice to have. There's a few text files that will actually change depending on what hair color you have, but nothing more major than that. Clothing options actually make a big difference though, and it's not just a straight upgrade. There's all sorts of places where it's better to look trashy or rich or like a priest.

I've said it before, but the game will never get the credit it deserves for charm and atmosphere. Just walking around Seattle and listening is really cozy and enjoyable. Some of that is a shift in online gaming culture towards being intensely negative, but some of that is in the game design itself - they made the player character so nimble, and made gliding between rooftops so easy, that most players hardly have cause to just walk around and take it in. I think the Arkham games had a similar challenge, where so many players probably just drive by, glide by, grapple by and never really stop to appreciate all the little details. People just can't enjoy and savor things anymore.

Chinatown is definitely my favorite part of the city. I know some of you think the color purple is a secret plot to turn you bi or whatever, but walking around this part of the city in particular is just really moody and nice. This quest is designed in such a way that following Fabien's scent also gives you a nice walk around tour of the city. Lots of games do that, but I still thought it was nice. I also like how you can turn off auspex and still pick up most trails in the game, addressing the issue with players missing some of the visual treat when everything is greyed out like that. Stuff like Fabien's scent is still a pretty obvious red follow me line, but later on stuff like prints in the snow, drops of blood, are always visible without the special vision mode if you're keen enough to pick up on them.

The voice acting in this game is really quite good. The original had moments of really good acting too, but then other NPCs were clearly being voiced by the devs. I feel like this one is much more even.
