Windii's translation of Jet Black Hedgehog misses a lot. If you're only reading the fan translation you're not getting the full picture of how Shadow sounds. Let's go over chapter 1.Shadow is polite to adults in a way English can't show. When he says 「だから そんなもの 知りません。」 ("That's why I don't know about such things.") it's the polite negative, not the blunt 知らない. It comes off like a well-mannered kid answering grown-ups he doesn't like. The English usually makes him sound flat or sulky instead.「やはり僕は、生まれるべきではなかったんだなぁ…。」 ("After all… I really shouldn't have been born, huh…") ends with that soft なぁ and trailing dots. It's quiet and wistful, like he's sighing the thought to himself.There's also this broken repetition the English completely drops. Across three panels it's 「マリアだけは!」 -> 「マリアだけは!!」 -> 「マリアだけは!!!」 ("Maria, at least…!" / "Only Maria…!!" / "Maria above all…!!!"). It's an incomplete sentence getting more desperate. だけは means "her, above all others." English just replaces it with normal full sentences.When he's scared he gets blunt. 「返事をしろ、マリア!!!」 ("Answer me, Maria!!!") uses the rough imperative しろ. He starts giving orders. At the same time he calls the soldier who shot her キサマ, which is extremely contemptuous. He's still polite to the regular staff, but not to that guy.His speech literally breaks apart too. 「よかった…。 いま…すぐ医務室に…っ」 ("Thank goodness… Now… to the infirmary right away…!") ends with that little っ, like the words get cut off in his throat. English smooths it into a casual line.Gyoro talks with those katakana verb endings and the old-fashioned comic ンデヤンス. He sounds like some music-hall character from another century. English just gives him normal modern speech.And Maria's list - きれいなもの、やさしいもの、つよいもの ("beautiful things, gentle things, strong things"). やさしい here is more about tenderness than moral "kindness." Translating it as kind pulls it in a different direction.The fan translation is readable, but it keeps sanding edges off.
