It's so crazy how people think that $20/month AI that's better than them at coding, writing and art isn't going to replace them.

I'm following this tutorial for Godot and currently at a small roadblock regarding the attack animation. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NNnuXie3xVU
For some reason clicking "Z", the attack button for this project, causes the character animation to get stuck in the position it was moving in and stays in it. Here's a pastebin just in case, I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong since I followed the guide to a T so far. https://pastebin.com/xyAPQWH7

To encourage build diversity, there are a lot of passive skills. Here's one called "Combination," which turns a character's basic unarmed attack into a two hit combo with a chance to deal a third hit with large knockback. All skills - Active or passive - Occupy a skill slot. Every weapon type, even unarmed, has it's own skills you can master.

I'm having so much fun.

I see, I did that beforehand but still came across the issue then.
It's probably that I messed up the movement/animations since the character only has sprites for going left and right, which likely caused the weird reactions. I've got it working better now and will tinker more with that stuff to get the attack animation to play properly

There's a local/cultural card game that nobody outside or even inside my country knows about. I'd like to dev it, publish it on Steam for free, maybe sell some cosmetics/card backs on the side but mostly I'm interested in deving it because I want to play it with my friends, give old boomers a way to play it with their friends/each other and preserve a small part of our culture.

What kinda engines/stuff should I look into? It should have voice chat and multiplayer, otherwise it's just a card game.

Unity, Godot, Game Maker, or even Board Game Simulator. Balatro was made in MonoGame, honestly, you can make a game in literally anything. Just do a little reading into all of these and see which one suits you best. Without knowing your knowledge level it's tough to give a recommendation, but this sounds like a fun and doable project.

Thanks for the input anons! I did consider Tabletop simulator but since I want the game to be free and accessible so older people can play it that is out of the question. Same with RPGmaker since you need to DL libraries etc etc. I didn't mention it but I was also planning on releasing it for Android/iphone as a lot of older people don't have Steam but they do have phones plus that way VC is easy to enable.

I'll look into Godot. The game is easy to code but the difficulty comes from implementing quality of life stuff that non-gamers, old people can instantly use. Basically voice chat, no registration, ease of finding games with people who share your language, observing board state (although this is harder on a phone)

Thanks again

>but I know my game sucks
The way I see it, there are 3 possible scenarios at play here:

A. This place is a circle-jerking hugbox where no one is honest (isn't this supposed to be 4chan?)
B. You're all feds and paid agents setting me up for my downfall.
C. I'm wrong (absolutely impossible since I made the game so I know it sucks)

So which is it, Mr. Glowie?
>>
>>580492463
I don't think in this case you can have honesty without anonymity. And I could honestly give positive feedback to many games that flopped. These days to flop you just need to be in the top 10% instead of top 5%

Which game?
Generally demos get comments based on their apparent level of potential, we can give props to federx for working on a mech game he can never hope to get to the AAA quality it wants to be - but it’s understood that he is aware of that fact. So no reason to dunk on it.
On the other hand there’s people making a super polished "turd" where you get the feeling they might be deluding themselves into perhaps hoping for a success in spite of many clear problems. Those projects garner negative comments, because apparently the author is unaware of the issues.
tl;dr if you’re game is self-aware bad it will not draw much negative criticism

Would you rather have
a million people play your game for free, so get $0
or
5k people play your game, so you get $25k?
Let's pretend these are the only two options and you can't jew your way into earning money for the $0 game
>>
>>580497776
How is that even a question, of course it's "a million people play your game for free, so get $0", then I make a sequel and sell it for 1$ and make 1 million dollars minus taxes.
>>
>>580498032
this obviously an audience is worth more than 25k

>>580483408
How the fuck do people design rpg-type high depth combat systems from scratch?
Like look at the divinity original sin games, probably the best example I can think of.
How did they physically plan all that out? How do you go from a blank sheet of paper to that?
>>
a game about jews :)
>>
>>580498032
>>580498074
First order thinking. Just because a million people played your game for free, you're assuming a million would pay a dollar for it. In fact you have your answer in the second case, 5k people paid $10 for the game so after Steam's cut and taxes you have $25k left. But to get the same numbers from the sequel, you have to make a sequel. So in the second case you make a game and get $25k. In the first case + sequel you make two games and get $25k.
>>
>>580498276
Fortunately you don’t even need to plan it all upfront, the whole point about these combat systems is that you set some high-level facts ("axioms") and the whole interaction depth kinda follows naturally from it.
So it’s mostly about finding a good tech foundation that allows everything to interact with everything flexibly (ECS), then throw whatever mechanics you think of at it and voilá it’s deep.
>>
>>580498032
>>580498401
From running other sites, in general for pure entertainment stuff without dark patterns 2% will convert at minimum.
So you have to sell it at $50 to make $1M.
Realistically though it’ll be more that convert.
>>
>>580497776
5k play it and get 25k. if 1 million play it, some AI cloner would clone it and make money. I gotta get something out of this deal(if it is cloned at 5k players)
>>
>>580498683
Just clone the game yourself, clone it like 10 times so you make a billion dollars and buy Steam.
>>
>>580498759
A billion wouldn't even buy you Gaben's yachts.
>>
>>580498637
2%-5% will convert in a freemium model, but this would have to be a sequel and a paid one at that.

take the 25k, i can survive for a few years with this, i'll make a good game during the time this game provides

>>
>>580501346
>you can't jew your way into earning money for the $0 game
but you CAN build a following on social media from the game and start kickstarter/patreon/ko-fi campaigns for another game you're making

I like to have layers and be able to animate quickly. idk I think the latest MSpaint has quite a bit of stuff but I'm still on win 10
>>
>>580508981
I'd stick with Gimp. It's far more powerful than normies realize but you have to make an effort
>>
>>580506930
respectable, I am the same way. but it's because I am an art god. if I sucked I might feel differently
>>
>>580492463
Itch comments aren't really anonymous so nobody says anything super hurtful. Posting in the threads is better for that.
But also if it's clear a game is just a bad idea and nothing will save it, people just suggest what they can to be helpful rather than suggest that you completely remake the game or give up.
Also if you're clearly a beginner nobody is going to tell you to implement changes that are beyond what you can reasonably do. It's like grading a 13 year old's essay.
>>
>>580508981
Aseprite is pretty easy to use/intuitive and free as the other anon mentioned. It's standard for pixel artist to use it anyway. MSPaint has like no way to animate.
>>
>>580508981
There's no single "2D art', there are many kinds of 2D art and specialized programs for each kind. Since you're using Gimp maybe you'd like to use Krita.

I've never heard of Krita but I'll look into it.
I've heard good things about Aesprite but I'm not really going for a pixel art look with this game, would it still work?
If it helps I'm coming from a traditional art background (painting and pastels mostly).

It would be like a comedian getting accused of stealing because he made a yo mama joke.

Do these mobile game slops make any money? Recently, I played some to engage in a sort of "play that, get rewards here" for a certain app, and they are awful. Generic assets, generic gameplay, takes ages to let you play because the tutorials go on far too long, everything is a dumb resource, every screen has one or more interactables, if you watch an ad, they keep spamming the "buy no ads", and even if you skip all the "watch ad" buttons, you get a forced ad break anyway.

You know, the usual. But it has been like that for so long... It must work? Also, the ad quality that Google accepts is crazy scammy. One of the popular ad tactics is a similar game to the one you are playing throwing an ad with "YOU JUST HIT YOUR LIMIT WITH THIS GAME VERSION, UPDATE NOW"... Jesus Christ. If it works, I want a piece of this pie. There has to be some catch.
>>
>>580512320
If they were successful they wouldn't have to beg you and offer you money to play them
>>
>>580505720
when will indie timmies and artcels releaise that the moment you post anything to the Internet it becomes officially public domain and everyone and everyone anywhere in the world is well with in their rights to exploit "your" work for financial gains? If this indie dev is worried about his game becoming "stolen" property then maybe he should have cash in before anyone else can. You snooze you loose.
>>
>>580512320
yes, you make free app + in-game payments + some sort of dopamine hit loop and then tie extra dopamine hits to in-game currency you buy for real money and prey on kids and teenagers with their parents credit card info saved to dump money into it

AI is pretty bad at coming up with ideas. I prompted it to just come up with a game title and my idea was still better than anything it came up with.

16-bit is more about the CPU/memory architecture than how the game looks, but when 16-bit consoles and PCs were the norm, games looked a certain way so I guess that's what they mean by 16-bit looking game even though it's 64k colors

i cant think of a more untapped niche game mechanic than botting in mmorpgs.
idle games are not a solution cause looking at a 2D screen with abstract graphics isn't the same at all.
leaving your character grinding all night and looking into your inventory in the morning if a rare weapon dropped is just very satisfying.
melvor idle feels completely pointless.

yeah incremental is about numbers going up, but not about "literally" watching a number go p.
>>
>>580525602
>>580526105
>>580526495
I didn't follow the whole convo, but a lot of the responses seem to be wrong, so to clear things up, the "bit" here typically refers to the color depth: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_depth

Palettes are further limited to a specific number of colors. For example, the iconic PC-98 style is the result of a limit of a 16 color palette (or 4-bits for selection from a fixed palette) within a range of 4096 possible colors (or 12-bit color depth).

You can browse https://lospec.com/palette-list and search for palettes tagged with a specific color depth to see examples.

>>
>>580526670
just the limitations of the hardware at the time like CPU speeds and RAM quantity and storage capacity. many games in those period had less than 256 colors so when someone says a 16-bit looking game, it's shorthand for late early-mid 90s fidelity, not the number of colors
>>
>>580526802
fuck you mean a niche? mmo botting has been big for the past 2 decades
unless you literally mean MAKE AN MMO THEN MAKE A BUILT-IN BOT
then yeah private mmo servers are doing it and indeed it brings in a lot of money but it's not that niche of an idea
>>
>>580526983
1-bit = 1 color
8-bits = 256 colors
16-bits = 2 bytes = 65536 colors
32-bits = 4 bytes = 16777216 colors * 256 alpha values
>>

That one is the script for generating the images from a json database.
There were some other scripts to automate the process but they're almost useless as I found out.
To bring back the recap, you need to manually gather all the recap posts. You only need the image script and the database and the progress media (images or videos). Can you all remember to gather all the posts (for the past week) and generate the image?
You need these assets to be in the same directory as the script.

Friendslop is good but it's like you need a streamer to randomly find it and play it and make it viral, most friendslops don't make it, you'd have to print out a different friendslop every other week and hope one of them takes. Incrementa/sidle are also big but Steam is getting flooded with 100s of these vibecoded every week.

>“THE QUIET HOURS” — A Survival Mystery Without the Usual Stupid Tropes

Core idea:
Every night at exactly 02:13, the world enters The Quiet Hours—a 47‑minute period where all sound disappears. Not muted. Not dampened. Gone.
People don’t sleep during it. They don’t dream. They simply wait.

The Quiet Hours aren’t supernatural or alien—they’re a physics event caused by a catastrophic failure in a global quantum‑communication network. The network didn’t collapse; it folded, creating pockets of spacetime where vibration cannot propagate.

Inside those pockets, something else can propagate.

Patterns.

Not creatures. Not ghosts. Instructions.

The disappearances aren’t abductions—they’re executions of a protocol. People are being reorganized at the atomic level into structures that serve an unknown function.
>>
>>580547492
>The network didn’t collapse; it folded, creating pockets of spacetime where vibration cannot propagate.
it'd make more sense if there's just random invisible pockets that annihilate everything in contact at the atomic level.

If I apply the damage after the projectile animation finishes and the entity dies, I will have to deal with what happens with remaining already inflight projectiles after the creature is dead. If apply before, I will have to deal with timing of animations (last bullet flight + any other entity death after effects).

In general, how do anons go about it?
>>
>>580533714
>breed conquer marry divorce
you're making a sequel to fuck marry kill?
>>
>>580558507
I mean it depends if you want them to finish playing but not deal damage or despawn, either do a sweep over projectiles and if owner.dead then despawn, or on impact check if owner.dead to not register the hit
it's more a game design choice than a technical one, depends on how you want your game to work/look
>>
>>580558507
Each projectile should deal with itself. Once it reaches the target, check to see if the target is still valid. If so, apply damage and any on-hit animations. If not, just free itself.

Look up all the different "-punk" styles and pick one of the other ones if you want something more obscure. Medieval fantasy and cyberpunk are pretty common.

Goddamn I finally figured out how to get inspiration. Instead of looking at shit and trying to think of something that will be popular or good I just look for what I would personally want to play or see in a game. It sounds obvious but I really didn't think that way before. I looked through my whole inspiration folder and realized I have a ton of shit I don't actually want to see or play myself, and to find tons of other new stuff I do actually like but didn't want to admit it

I really like ASCII gaems.
I created a little project using C and raylib (cool library btw).
The characters are moving to the right.
Actually, the code is really short, here it is:
(I hope
works here)
#include "raylib.h"

#define CHARW 9
#define CHARH 12
#define SECOND 30 // 60 -> 1 second
#define MOVMNT_PER_SEC (CHARW * (((time == SECOND) ? (time = 0) : (++time)) / SECOND))

typedef struct {
Color color;
Vector2 pos;
Rectangle atlas;
} enemy_t;

int main(void) {
InitWindow(640, 480, "GAME");

// variables
Texture2D atlas = LoadTexture("atlas.png");

// player
enemy_t enemy_arr[49] = {0};

for (int i = 0; i < 37; ++i) {
enemy_arr[i].atlas.width = CHARW;
enemy_arr[i].atlas.height = CHARH;
enemy_arr[i].atlas.x = GetRandomValue(0, 5)*9;
enemy_arr[i].atlas.y = GetRandomValue(0, 1)*12;
enemy_arr[i].pos.y+=13*i;
enemy_arr[i].color.r = GetRandomValue(1, 255);
enemy_arr[i].color.g = GetRandomValue(1, 255);
enemy_arr[i].color.b = GetRandomValue(1, 255);
enemy_arr[i].color.a = 255;
}

unsigned char time = 0;

SetTargetFPS(60);
while(!WindowShouldClose()) {

for (int i = 0; i < 37; ++i) {
enemy_arr[i].pos.x += MOVMNT_PER_SEC;
enemy_arr[i].pos.y += MOVMNT_PER_SEC;
}

BeginDrawing();
ClearBackground(BLACK);

for (int i = 0; i < 37; ++i)
DrawTextureRec(atlas, enemy_arr[i].atlas, enemy_arr[i].pos, enemy_arr[i].color);

EndDrawing();
}

UnloadTexture(atlas);
CloseWindow();
return 0;
}
Cheer girl.

When you use 'Reach' and select a goal for your score card, she pops up and cheers for you. It is a visual indicator that your opponent is locked into a specific scoring row; let's you know to try and use your dice to knock their held dice off the table and scratch. You need to spend HP or MP to initiate a reach. Successfully completing the reach gives you back twice that amount.

Lore wise, they are from Sunny's home island, there is a tradition where the young girls are taught this dance to pull forth magics from deep within the earth and imbue someone with strength.

>another kritzinger game

oh fuck OFF. ritter. it's fucking ritter again. fifteen years and we're doing this again because nobody remembers anything.

I was in hotglue when you could still tell people that without having to explain which asshole you weren't. Aika, Cosmic Break, the Aeria forum shit. 150 people in the guild but somehow I got to answer for whatever he'd been posting that day. I wanted people to play with. that was it. instead it's pubs coming to /jp/ to argue, his mates doing the u mad routine, everybody else leaving. and then he leaves too because there's another game to do it in. WE WERE STILL PLAYING THE OLD ONE YOU CUNT.

And Shock Cocoon. same picture. same thread. same "what do you guys think of this project" from somebody who apparently just discovered his own fucking website. Chief Editor and Project Manager. couldn't just make a game, had to make sure everybody knew who was IN CHARGE of making the game. I remember trying to filter him and losing the game threads because he put his name on those too. can't even get rid of the prick without getting rid of the thing you came there for.
>>>/jp/7504482
>>>/jp/7504494
deleted named thread, anonymous repost. there. before somebody says nobody ever had proof. i'm not digging this up for fun, i'm digging it up because you people keep fucking LYING about why everyone hated him.

>it's been fifteen years
yes and? does the date make it not happen? am I supposed to like him now? he gets to show up with another demo and we're all supposed to go oh nice work anon. FUCK your demo. I don't care if it's good.

And don't reply "who" you know who. or you're him. and if you're not him why are you doing this for him. why is there ALWAYS somebody here doing this for him. I was there before the name change, I was there before the studio shit, you don't get to tell me it was harmless because you only saw the funny screenshots. it wasn't fucking funny on our end.

Someone has to be annoyed and everyone else has to hear how amused he is by it. Fifteen years and he's still doing this and I'm still explaining it to people who reply "based"

And now I've looked because you people won't shut up and yes it's shit. On purpose apparently. Fine, you win, I'm mad. I still hate you. Winning doesn't mean I have to stop hating you. I was replying to the other hotglue guy anyway, nobody asked the rest of you. go back to your shitty demos and leave me out of it

which half. which FUCKING half. Aeria? hotglue? the named thread you deleted? you're going to have to be specific because apparently one of us was paying attention.

you don't remember me at all do you. Not even vaguely. I could put my old nick here and you'd just search that too. I'm not doing it. I'm not giving you another thing to look up so you can go "oh that guy" and pretend you remembered. You should fucking know. I know how that sounds. shut up.

>my saved image folder
oh but you kept the pictures. good. glad the pictures made it. I'm sitting here remembering arguments I had with people because YOUR fucking name was attached to the guild and you need thumbnails to work out what I'm talking about. It was 150 people when you wanted to explain why it wasn't your fault. Now it's too long ago to remember. Always fucking something. I used to read your replies before posting mine. Actually read them, try to work out whether you were being serious. That's the part that makes me want to scream. I thought we were having an argument. Apparently I was just there while you found something to post.

>Please consider therapy.
don't fucking "please" me. You were pleased with yourself about making people seethe less than two hours ago. At least stick to it. Tell me you remember and thought it was funny. I can hate that. What the fuck am I supposed to do with you needing a refresher. And don't do the "I'm going to sleep" shit. I remember that too. Of course I fucking do. I can't remember the login for the account I played on but I remember you going to bed.

I'm not asking to matter to you. That's not what I said. I want you to understand who you're talking to. No I'm not posting the nick. You'd just say you forgot that as well and then I'd have to sit here knowing you saw it and still didn't remember. Fuck you. I was there. Look again. Not the pictures, the replies. Game design is like building a house of cards. You start working on the base and it looks fairly stable, but the more you build on top of it, the tiny little misalignment will eventually cause the whole thing to come crashing down.

I wanted to try and make an episodic exploration kind of game inspired by Life Is Strange but in a simple Twine format with zero knowledge of coding and gave up.
For a week I tried to get the grasp of HTML, CSS and JavaScript and still knew fuck all, and the things I'd want in the game would be impossible to implement/do for me. Even tried going the AI way but that shit is literally useless making 5 mistakes for every single prompt.
It's joever for me, I might just be low IQ I guess.

>>580586779
or just use renpy, that has the benefit of infinite source code with being able to decomp any renpy game

The problem with Renpy is without art or any kind of visuals, the game's as good as dead. I also tried to learn Blender, then switched to DAZ for a bit but my laptop isn't that powerful to handle rendering etc.
With Twine you can kind of rely on writing carrying the game with minimal art assets.

Yeah, it's genuinely depressing. There's a dilemma inside of me thats completely self induced. I have this ego that wants to be prideful of a craft I used to love, but I'm unable to let go of the convenience of just babysitting AI, I'm kind of a huge pussy for even having this dilemma.

It killed my love for game development since it was my only strength. I shouldn't be complaining that the gatekeeping has disappeared, allowing artists to exist and succeed more in this space.

But again, I am small!!! I want to be the only one that wins!!!

No I completely get it. The fact that programming very well was hard and I was very good at it was the only reason I was employable or had any value to society. Now that ai can do it I am autistic dead weight and society would prefer I kill myself since I am no longer an exploitable resource. Thankfully I made enough to NEET forever (don’t be jealous I’m in my mid 30s) and find something else to do while continuing to live out of spite.
Aside from this I’ve gotten into tinkering around with materials engineering, which is a good outlet since it requires physical testing of sample coupons that ai physically won’t be able to do for a while. Robotics has barely moved in five years.
