I think a core issue with all Deltarune shipping is that fans want to treat being canon as the highest accomplishment a ship can reach when that flies in the face of the game's message itself.The game is pretty solidly anti-prophecy in its theming, painting being constrained to a pre-ordained narrative as a bad thing.But the problem is that anything that happens in the game is inherently part of a pre-ordained narrative. Nothing can happen unless Toby Fox allows it. Even the weird route which is all about breaking the bounds of the game is just an intended, scripted backdoor that's still within the game.And Deltarune is meta enough that this is all part of the story.Only a non-canon ship can be spiritually in line with the game's themes, but for obvious reasons, that's unsatisfying.This doesn't just apply to ships and can really apply to any sort of theories or hopes for the game, but ships are probably the best example.

We can theorize about where it'll land all year long, but until we actually see it, it's still a hanging plot beat.The chapter structure may be what kills interest in this game, and it's so unfortunate.
