I personally don’t like the "Shadow and Maria as siblings" interpretation because it undermines what makes Shadow work as a dark mirror to Sonic in SA2.I’m not really talking about whether a reinterpretation or fan work can make that dynamic work on its own merits. My point is more-so what happens when you apply that framing retroactively to the original story and its character parallels.In SA2, Shadow is supposed to be what happens if Sonic had his "worst day ever".His "Amy" the girl who believed in him and the future of the world, had her life heartbreakingly cut short, and that loss left him jaded and misanthropic. Lashing out at the world. Maria’s kindness, her hope that everyone could live happily, and the memory of her demise haunts the narrative in the same way Amy's optimism colors the world around her and the memory that is invoked in Shadow by Amy is what saves the planet. That makes her "Dark Amy". A dark mirror to Amy Rose.Amy asks him to give humanity a chance and it sparks in him his memory of Maria.That’s why making Maria primarily Shadow’s sister weakens the parallel for me. The closest equivalent on Sonic’s side would then be Tails, and even there you have to really push the "like brothers" framing over "best friends." But Tails isn’t the character the story uses to reach Shadow through his memories of Maria, Amy is. My contention isn’t that a sister couldn’t believe in him or inspire him. It’s that this changes the relationship being mirrored, so the Sonic/Shadow and Amy/Maria parallels no longer line up in the same way.Sonic is a comparatively naive and innocent Shadow. Shadow has seen the worst of the world and is lashing out and must learn to live with his past.
